Turning Streets Into Housing, Adam Millard-Bell
Turning Streets Into Housing, Adam Millard-Bell
PSU Transportation Seminars
Wide residential streets in US cities are both a contributor to homelessness and a potential strategy to provide more affordable housing. In residential neighborhoods, subdivision ordinances typically set binding standards for street width, far in excess of what is economically optimal or what private developers and residents would likely prefer. These street width standards are one contributor to high housing costs and supply restrictions, which exacerbate the housing affordability crisis in high-cost cities.
Cities can certainly reduce street widths in new development. But what about existing neighborhoods? Dr. Adam Millard-Ball proposes two strategies through which excess street space can accommodate …

Leidos Chair of Future Warfare Studies Black Books
The “great captains” of military history have described the contradictions between rigorous, formal, institutionalized planning and the commonly chaotic results and necessary readjustments through a series of pithy aphorisms that by now have become clichés. The Prussian field marshal Helmuth von Moltke the Elder is cited—routinely, exhaustingly, almost annoyingly—as having said, “No plan survives contact with the enemy.” Yet perhaps Moltke captured the challenge more succinctly in a lesser-known but more apt quote: “Strategy is a system of expedients; it is more than a mere scholarly discipline.”
Reparative And Equitable Practices And Partnerships, Meghan Z. Gough
Reparative And Equitable Practices And Partnerships, Meghan Z. Gough
Richmond Racial Equity Essays: Individual Essays
The author's vision of a racially equitable Richmond is one in which resourced institutions, such as higher education, invest in reparative and equitable practices that respect lived expertise and are built on partnerships. As we rethink our roles and responsibilities, we should invest in reparative and equitable planning practices that include 1) acknowledging structural racism as a societal problem; 2) prioritizing lived expertise; and, 3) building long-term and mutually-beneficial partnerships.
Security Threats, American Pressure, And The Role Of Key Personnel: How Nato’S Defence Planning Process Is Alleviating The Burden-Sharing Dilemma, John R. Deni
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
In 2017, for the first time since the end of the Cold War, none of the capability targets identified in NATO’s quadrennial NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP) were left on the negotiating table. Previously, capability targets were identified by the alliance’s secretariat, but they remained unfilled as allies failed to assume responsibility for them.
This monograph examines the 2014–18 iteration of the NDPP, which represented a stunning turnaround in transatlantic burden sharing. The analysis reveals a combination of factors—the changed threat environment, political pressure from Washington, and the role of “policy entrepreneurs” working within NATO—best explain the alliance’s success in …

Taking Flight As A Campus Partner: Library Programs Support A Residential Curriculum, Katy Kelly, Heidi Gauder
Taking Flight As A Campus Partner: Library Programs Support A Residential Curriculum, Katy Kelly, Heidi Gauder
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
In this chapter, librarians discuss the process of taking part in a university co-curricular residential learning program that effectively tripled attendance at library workshops and continues to challenge and inspire librarians to try new topics and partnerships. By connecting the programs to campus learning goals, the number of library events grew 50% over one year, with individuals from multiple library departments hosting or supporting the events. The authors also include descriptions of efforts related to planning, marketing and assessment of these programs and offer some benefits and challenges to UD’s program model. As the demand for campus programs continues to …

Disaster Recovery Manual (2020), David Stokoe, Marianne Swanberry Hanley, Thomas House, Syracuse University Libraries
Books
The Syracuse University Libraries’ Disaster Recovery Plan for library materials outlines procedures for salvaging a wide variety of library materials in the event of a disaster of minor emergency. We have designed this plan to help library staff cope with and recover materials from minor emergencies that typically involve 500 or less items. The majority of these emergencies will be caused by interior flooding due to leaky pipes (or water coming in from other vulnerable areas in library buildings) or from patron mishaps. The resultant wet books and other objects, such as photographs, microfilm, and sound recordings, can usually be …

Indigenous peoples experience poorer health outcomes on almost every measure of health and wellbeing, when compared to the rest of Canada. For decades researchers have been working independently on addressing health inequalities, yet little progress has been made on closing the gap. This Discipline-specific way of thinking is too narrow and neglects indigenous ideologies of holistic approaches to health. An interdisciplinary approach to indigenous health research provides a more collaborative and integrated opportunity to address the multidimensional aspects of health. This paper has the goals to contribute to the limited research on interdisciplinary indigenous health research.

Motivation To Prevent Chronic Disease Or Complications, Ashton Hideki Pike
Motivation To Prevent Chronic Disease Or Complications, Ashton Hideki Pike
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Motivational interviewing has been used with relatively positive success in behavioral interventions as a way to stimulate change in patient's habits and attitudes, yet there is little information available as to how to design and implement a plan of action. This becomes even more difficult for a patient who might be resistant to large changes in their behavior and habits. One approach that has potential promise is the use of a SMART goal intervention in conjunction with motivational interviewing to change unhealthy habits while assessing the progression and degree of commitment to those goals.

Science, Advocacy, Policy, Planning: Tools For Advancing Transportation Equity, Garrett S. Mcallister
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
The theme of this portfolio is how different tools and approaches can be used for advancing transportation equity. Broadly defined, transportation equity is about fairness in transportation. There are a number of ways this fairness can be assessed. The most common way to assess transportation equity is by looking at the fairness of outcomes, distributed geographically, socially, or even by mode of transportation. Equity can also be defined by the fairness of processes. The first half of the portfolio illustrates some of the problems with the current transportation system and how it is unhealthy (Piece 1) and unjust (Piece 2). …
Chaos As Creativity, Catherine E. Wilkins
Chaos As Creativity, Catherine E. Wilkins
Western Libraries eBook Collection
Chaos and planning is integral to the creative process when planning for the future. The initial impetus for the writing was the author’s dissertation that provided a framework for planning future libraries. Chaos theory and chaos is reviewed broadly from a generalist perspective across multiple disciplines and over time from ancient times to the present. An abstract planning process is presented along with a diagram that facilitates mapping the current environment. Identifying intrinsic and extrinsic influences present in the environment provides a process to map a probable future environment. To illustrate how the planning process works music is used as …
Individual Decision Making In Online Public-Participation Transportation Planning, Martin Swobodzinski
Individual Decision Making In Online Public-Participation Transportation Planning, Martin Swobodzinski
PSU Transportation Seminars
The empirical evaluation of complex decision support systems is often limited to the self-reported satisfaction of the systems’ users.
Such an approach is problematic due to the conflation of the user's satisfaction related to the decision support system and the decision making process and its outcomes.
In addition, it bears limitations that are common among most techniques that solicit participant-stated feedback.
In this talk, based on data that was gathered by a web-based participatory system for transportation planning in the Puget Sound region, I present analytical methods for the empirical evaluation of decision support systems based on human-computer interaction. In …

Moab Futures: A Bioregional Planning Analysis, Utah State University
Bioregional Planning Studio Reports
Since its inception, Utah State University's Bioregional Planning Program has conducted landscape-level planning studies across Utah, specifically addressing planning for the future. Rooted in Ian McHarg's seminal book, Design with Nature (1969), the Bioregional Planning Program investigates how biophysical systems influence settlement and culture, and, inversely, how settlement and culture shape biophysical systems.

Toward Regional Resilience In Toronto: From Diagnosis To Action, Zack Taylor, Leah Birnbaum
Toward Regional Resilience In Toronto: From Diagnosis To Action, Zack Taylor, Leah Birnbaum
Western Urban and Local Governance Working Papers
Greater Toronto is recognized as a high-performing urban region. Over the past decade, however, negative social, economic, and environmental trends have emerged that threaten the region’s future. On the basis of documentary research and four focus group workshops with a diverse array of professional practitioners, this paper assesses the Toronto region’s current assets and vulnerabilities in relation to future risks. The discussion is framed by the concept of resilience—an increasingly popular, yet abstract, concept in urban planning and public administration. This paper proposes, first, that planning and policymaking be directed toward increasing the region’s resilience, understood as the diversity and redundancy …

Estate Planning, Tamara L. Cushing
Estate Planning, Tamara L. Cushing
Rural Tax Education
No matter your age, as a landowner, a business person, or simply a homeowner with valuables you want to go to someone special, you should be concerned about the future of your business or the distribution of the property in question to the right individual or organization. The intent of estate planning is to plan for the successful distribution of property in accordance with the wishes of the deceased and to do so with a minimum of delay and anguish immediately after the death of an older generation. This is typically one of the most emotional times of our lives …

Rancho Santa Fe Foundation (Rsff) Plan-To-Plan Report, Scott Campbell, Karen Gould, Jessica Hanson York, Susan Pyke, Christy Wilson
Strategic Planning
Over the past two months, a USD project team conducted extensive research to inform the strategic planning process of the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation (RSFF). The team identified three key questions that will be important for the RSFF to address as it positions itself for growth. Those questions are: 1) What is the identity of the RSFF, both internally and externally; 2) How should the RSFF define community; and 3) How should the RSFF define growth?

Strategic Planning
In January 2009, a team of students from the University of San Diego’s (USD) Nonprofit Leadership and Management conducted a pre-planning exercise to help prepare the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM) for its 2012-2022 strategic plan. With an annual attendance last year of more than 600,000 visitors, the Museum is one of the largest cultural institutions in Balboa Park. The consulting team engaged in an extensive discovery process, including a review of the Museum’s current strategic plan1 and preliminary key informant interviews. The results of this discovery process pointed towards a number of themes from which, three key strategic …

DPAC collaborates with New Mexico Main Street, a nonprofit organization administered through New Mexico Economic Development Program, and a local Main Street organization. The partnership assists communities with planning and design for downtown revitalization. In the spring of 2009, DPAC had the pleasure of working with the Deming Main Street organization. The following design interventions envision ways in which Deming Main Street program can utilize its existing assets--its historic building stock, diverse communities, location, and climate--to develop a vital downtown for locals and visitors. They are the outcome of twelve weeks of work by a team of twenty planning, architecture, …
