Wide residential streets in US cities are both a contributor to homelessness and a potential strategy to provide more affordable housing. In residential neighborhoods, subdivision ordinances typically set binding standards for street width, far in excess of what is economically optimal or what private developers and residents would likely prefer. These street width standards are one contributor to high housing costs and supply restrictions, which exacerbate the housing affordability crisis in high-cost cities.

The Prussian field marshal Helmuth von Moltke the Elder is cited—routinely, exhaustingly, almost annoyingly—as having said, “No plan survives contact with the enemy.” Yet perhaps Moltke captured the challenge more succinctly in a lesser-known but more apt quote: “Strategy is a system of expedients; it is more than a mere scholarly discipline.”

In 2017, for the first time since the end of the Cold War, none of the capability targets identified in NATO’s quadrennial NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP) were left on the negotiating table. Previously, capability targets were identified by the alliance’s secretariat, but they remained unfilled as allies failed to assume responsibility for them.

This monograph examines the 2014–18 iteration of the NDPP, which represented a stunning turnaround in transatlantic burden sharing. The analysis reveals a combination of factors—the changed threat environment, political pressure from Washington, and the role of “policy entrepreneurs” working within NATO—best explain the alliance’s success in …

This performance-based, subject-specific assessment and support system is used by teacher preparation programs throughout the United States. Success on the edTPA demonstrates a student candidate’s readiness for a full-time classroom teaching assignment.

In this chapter, librarians discuss the process of taking part in a university co-curricular residential learning program that effectively tripled attendance at library workshops and continues to challenge and inspire librarians to try new topics and partnerships. By connecting the programs to campus learning goals, the number of library events grew 50% over one year, with individuals from multiple library departments hosting or supporting the events. The authors also include descriptions of efforts related to planning, marketing and assessment of these programs and offer some benefits and challenges to UD’s program model. The Syracuse University Libraries’ Disaster Recovery Plan for library materials outlines procedures for salvaging a wide variety of library materials in the event of a disaster of minor emergency. We have designed this plan to help library staff cope with and recover materials from minor emergencies that typically involve 500 or less items. The majority of these emergencies will be caused by interior flooding due to leaky pipes (or water coming in from other vulnerable areas in library buildings) or from patron mishaps. The resultant wet books and other objects, such as photographs, microfilm, and sound recordings, can usually be …

Indigenous peoples experience poorer health outcomes on almost every measure of health and wellbeing, when compared to the rest of Canada. For decades researchers have been working independently on addressing health inequalities, yet little progress has been made on closing the gap. This Discipline-specific way of thinking is too narrow and neglects indigenous ideologies of holistic approaches to health. An interdisciplinary approach to indigenous health research provides a more collaborative and integrated opportunity to address the multidimensional aspects of health. This paper has the goals to contribute to the limited research on interdisciplinary indigenous health research.

Motivational interviewing has been used with relatively positive success in behavioral interventions as a way to stimulate change in patient's habits and attitudes, yet there is little information available as to how to design and implement a plan of action. This becomes even more difficult for a patient who might be resistant to large changes in their behavior and habits. One approach that has potential promise is the use of a SMART goal intervention in conjunction with motivational interviewing to change unhealthy habits while assessing the progression and degree of commitment to those goals.

The theme of this portfolio is how different tools and approaches can be used for advancing transportation equity. Broadly defined, transportation equity is about fairness in transportation. There are a number of ways this fairness can be assessed. The most common way to assess transportation equity is by looking at the fairness of outcomes, distributed geographically, socially, or even by mode of transportation. Equity can also be defined by the fairness of processes. Chaos and planning is integral to the creative process when planning for the future. The initial impetus for the writing was the author’s dissertation that provided a framework for planning future libraries. Chaos theory and chaos is reviewed broadly from a generalist perspective across multiple disciplines and over time from ancient times to the present. An abstract planning process is presented along with a diagram that facilitates mapping the current environment. Such an approach is problematic due to the conflation of the user's satisfaction related to the decision support system and the decision making process and its outcomes.

In addition, it bears limitations that are common among most techniques that solicit participant-stated feedback.

Greater Toronto is recognized as a high-performing urban region. Over the past decade, however, negative social, economic, and environmental trends have emerged that threaten the region’s future. On the basis of documentary research and four focus group workshops with a diverse array of professional practitioners, this paper assesses the Toronto region’s current assets and vulnerabilities in relation to future risks.The discussion is framed by the concept of resilience—an increasingly popular, yet abstract, concept in urban planning and public administration. The team identified three key questions that will be important for the RSFF to address as it positions itself for growth. Those questions are: 1) What is the identity of the RSFF, both internally and externally; 2) How should the RSFF define community; and 3) How should the RSFF define growth?

In January 2009, a team of students from the University of San Diego’s (USD) Nonprofit Leadership and Management conducted a pre-planning exercise to help prepare the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM) for its 2012-2022 strategic plan. With an annual attendance last year of more than 600,000 visitors, the Museum is one of the largest cultural institutions in Balboa Park. The consulting team engaged in an extensive discovery process, including a review of the Museum’s current strategic plan1 and preliminary key informant interviews. DPAC collaborates with New Mexico Main Street, a nonprofit organization administered through New Mexico Economic Development Program, and a local Main Street organization. The partnership assists communities with planning and design for downtown revitalization. In the spring of 2009, DPAC had the pleasure of working with the Deming Main Street organization. The following design interventions envision ways in which Deming Main Street program can utilize its existing assets--its historic building stock, diverse communities, location, and climate--to develop a vital downtown for locals and visitors.
