Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death in the United States, and non-small cell (NSCLC) is the most common type. An increasingly prevalent treatment in the last few years for NSCLC has been immunotherapy. However, for immunotherapy to be the most effective, we need to have a better understanding of how the immune system interacts with cancer in all stages. Specifically, we need to know where the immune cells reside, how they interact with each other, and how these populations change as the disease progresses. To define the tumor microenvironment, we stained 27 whole tumor slides with …

Synovial sarcomas are rare muscle cancers that have very few targeted therapies. HSP90 is a protein upregulated in this form of cancer and many others. A screening of this cancer was done in vitro, using FDA-approved drugs, showing that HSP90 could be a promising treatment option. A novel HSP90 inhibitor was applied to human and mouse synovial sarcoma cell lines and was analyzed after receiving a drug treatment for HSP90.

Personalized cancer care requires molecular characterization of neoplasms. While the research community accepts frozen tissues as the gold standard analyte for molecular assays, the source of tissue for all testing of tumor tissue in clinical cancer care comes almost universally from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue (FFPE). Specific to genomics assays, numerous studies have shown significant discordance in genetic information obtained from FFPE samples and cryopreserved or flash frozen samples. To explain the discordance between FFPE samples and cryopreserved samples, a head-to-head comparison between FFPE and cryopreserved tissues was performed to analyze the DNA yield, DNA purity and DNA quality in terms …

Nutritional Support For Oncology Patients: Role For The Pcp, Annabelle S. Feist
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Adequate nutrition is a key prognostic factor in the treatment outcomes of patients with cancer diagnoses. Despite the increased morbidity and mortality of malnutrition, the importance of nutrition for oncology patients is often not well communicated and not well understood by patients. Part of this issue stems from the limited information most patient can absorb at any given doctors appointment, especially regarding their cancer. Primary care providers hold a unique position to fill this gap and have the information be heard and retained given their usual role in addressing overall health. This project compiles resources in an easily accessible and …

Background
Forty-two million adults in the United States are providing unpaid care for a family member or friend over the age of 50. For approximately 2.5 million of these caregivers, cancer is the primary illness or disability of their care recipient (National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, 2020). As baby boomers continue to age, and the number of cancer survivors continues to increase, the need for informal caregivers will expand exponentially.
While Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is recommended for older patients with cancer and distress screening is recommended for all cancer patients, there are currently no recommendations regarding screening for …

Background: Medical cannabis (MC), state-regulated cannabis programs accessible with a physician certification for a qualifying diagnosis, now exist in 47 states. Little attention has been paid to ensuring equitable access to such programs for the most vulnerable cancer patients.1 Estimates of cannabis use in cancer patients range from 30-40%2 yet access to MC is highly dependent on a number of variables including: geography, cost, availability of certifying providers, lack of provider education and a confusing array of state programs coupled with ongoing federal illegality. The historic criminalization of cannabis and the disproportionate impact on People of Color creates another …

Surface Guided Radiation Therapy Versus Traditional Triangular Positioning, Katelyn Sausser
Medical Imaging Senior Posters
Surface-guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) is a positioning monitoring system utilizing 3D nonionizing optical surface imaging. This system assists in patient set-up and allows for real-time monitoring of the patient’s skin surface during radiation therapy treatment. Surface-guided imaging can be used for many treatment sites such as breast, abdomen, head and neck, and extremities. SGRT is believed to have more advantages than the traditional triangular positioning including shorter set-up times, improved accuracy and reproducibility of treatment area, decreased dose, and improved patient comfort. Studies have also shown the planned dose delivery can also be monitored with SGRT and decrease dose to …

Sgrt Eliminates Need For Patient Tattoos In Radiation Therapy, Gina Hemsley
Medical Imaging Senior Posters
Surface Guided Radiation Therapy, or SGRT, is a rapidly growing technology designed to improve radiation treatment accuracy of nearly every cancer type without the need for permanent skin tattoos. Patients were typically marked with 3 tattoos, indicating patient setup marks and isocenter marks. SGRT is an external beam radiation therapy technique which uses three-dimensional camera technology to accurately target and kill cancer cells. During patient setup and treatment, the technology uses the patient’s external surface to guarantee that the radiation dose is being consistently applied in accordance with the treatment plan, as well as tracking any patient motion throughout treatment. …

Radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses high- energy rays to kill cancer cells. There are a lot of cancers that can be treated with radiation, but a common type is prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in men. The types of radiation therapy used to treat prostate cancer are external beam radiation, brachytherapy, and radiopharmaceuticals. The most common machine used for radiation treatment is the linear accelerator. Most patients are treated using the linear accelerator but a select few can be treated using the cyber knife. The cyber knife is …

Cellular Glycosphingolipid Imbalance Modulates Emt In Cancer Cells, Laura E. Clark, Amanda Dickinson, Santiago Lima
Undergraduate Research Posters
Sphingolipids are key components of the plasma membrane and are regulators of complex biological processes often altered in cancer cells. In human tumors, genes of key enzymes that regulate levels of glucosylceramide and lactosylceramide are often amplified. However, it is unknown why these traits are positively selected in transformed cells. In this work, we used CRISPR-Cas9 to knockout two key enzymes amplified in tumors in HeLa and H1703 tumor-derived cell-lines. As expected, the knockout lines had dramatic accumulation of GlcCer and LacCer. However, unexpectedly, they showed significantly decreased in-vitro wound-healing capacity and an almost complete loss of in-vitro extra-cellular matrix …

Colorectal Cancer Screening In The Primary Care Setting: Community Outreach To Improve Screening Rates, Liberty J. Dupuis
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Colorectal cancer remains a leading cause of death from cancer in men and women in the U.S. and worldwide. Screening for colorectal cancer beginning at age 45 offers the opportunity for early intervention and decisive treatment for precancerous colon polyps as well as the early identification of cancer. This project aims to assess preferences around recommendations for colorectal cancer screening tests amongst a group of primary care providers as well as barriers that are commonly cited to those providers by patients who do not undergo or complete screening. The results of the provider survey were used to make recommendations for …
