Remote Working: How Do We Communicate In An All-Digital World?, Kaitlyn Sullivan
Remote Working: How Do We Communicate In An All-Digital World?, Kaitlyn Sullivan
Communication
This study examined the patterns of remote workers throughout their typical day. Fifteen remote employees participated in thirty-minute in-depth interviews. A semi-structured interview protocol was used to ask questions about perceptions and patterns concerning remote working and participants’ lifestyles. The in-depth interviews were able to illuminate both issues and frustrations of the participants as well as the unique benefits of working remotely. While many employers stated that they are more productive at home, others felt that they had less time off and a harder time logging off when the traditional workday was done. As a result, employees have begun changing …
Politeness Theory Patterns In The Online And In-Person Classroom, Erianne Thedorf
Politeness Theory Patterns In The Online And In-Person Classroom, Erianne Thedorf
Communication
Politeness theory and its relevance in the classroom have not been explored to understand how students and instructors maintain face and mitigate face-threatening acts (FTAs). This study sought to understand how instructors and students define “politeness” in the classroom, how both parties maintain face, and what differences between online and in-person classroom contexts occur. Based on computer-aided coding of data from open-ended questionnaires, results indicated that, when instructors use bald-on record FTAs in the classroom, this causes students to become more reticent in in-person and online classroom contexts. Instructors and students both maintain face by preparing for class and exhibiting …

Covid-19 Archive: Exhibits
Our exhibit engages with a number of distinct themes, and this thematic range reflects the evolution of our inquiry and points of exploration. However, the common thread that ties our exhibit together is public communication. We have centered local institutions in this exhibit, and we hope through exploring our collection you will feel encouraged to consider how COVID-19 has changed the way communities and institutions interact, and howthis interaction, in turn, has changed how we experience the pandemic. Moreover, we hope you will come to consider how these shifts in both method and content of communication are made manifest in …

Costas T. Lambrew Research Retreat 2021
Introduction- Controlling the COVID-19 pandemic requires effective public health communication strategies that can promote risk-reducing behaviors despite scientific uncertainties about their effectiveness. The current project developed and tested different theory-based communication strategies for generating public interest in COVID-19 risk-reducing behaviors. • Assessed the efficacy of two novel message frames – destigmatizing and uncertainty normalizing - relative to existing strategies

Posters: 2021 Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Background
As it became known that SARS-CoV-2 was spread through droplets, masks became a primary form of protection. While wearing masks was not a new in the health field, little is known about how they affect the patient-provider relationship.
Methods
We conducted interviews with patients and providers regarding their experience with mask-wearing in the hospital. Participants came from Internal Medicine hospitalists and patients. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded for analysis and interpretation.
Results
Our population included 9 patients and 9 providers. The benefit of wearing masks is safety; many providers stated they did not get sick at all during …

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Patient portals have shown promise in engaging individuals in the management of their health by allowing exchange of secure electronic messages with their providers. Increased messaging increases physician workload and contributes to burnout among primary care physicians. This project examines both patient and provider perspectives of MyChart messaging and suggests ways in which this tool can be better utilized.
