Unsafe Radwaste Disposal At Wipp, Citizens For Alternatives To Radioactive Dumping (Card), Davis Snow Dr. Nov 2004

Unsafe Radwaste Disposal At Wipp, Citizens For Alternatives To Radioactive Dumping (Card), Davis Snow Dr.

Citizens for Alternatives to Radioactive Dumping (CARD)

At WIPP, radioactive waste is being disposed of permanently in drums and boxes placed in rooms excavated in the Salado salt beds. Like all other excavations below the water table, the repository will saturate, and dissolved radioactivity can ultimately escape via boreholes, shaft.s or fractures to the overlying Rustler evaporites. The most evident aquifer in the Rustler, the Culebra dolomite, is claimed by DOE to provide such slow transport that the Rustler can be considered an adequate barrier to waste migration. But performance assessment modeling, based on insufficient exploration data, unsupportable deductions and faulty assumptions led to that claim. This …

Nuclear Cleanup: The Standards Conflict, Committee To Bridge The Gap, Daniel Hirsch Nov 2004

Nuclear Cleanup: The Standards Conflict, Committee To Bridge The Gap, Daniel Hirsch

Committee to Bridge the Gap

The U.S. Department of Energy has recently violated a longstanding Joint DOE-EPA Policy which commits DOE to clean up all its nuclear facilities nationwide to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund (CERCLA) standards. The focal point of this conflict between DOE and EPA cleanup standards is the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL), a 2800- acre facility on the Los Angeles-Ventura County line in Southern California. Ten reactors, a plutonium fuel facility, and a “hot laboratory” for cutting up irradiated nuclear fuel were operated at the facility, which opened in the 1940s when it was remote from populated areas. Now large …

New Mexico's Right To Know: The Potential For Groundwater Contaminants From Lanl To Reach The Rio Grande, Concerned Citizens For Nuclear Safety, George Rice

Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety (CCNS)

This report addresses two questions:

1. Is it possible for groundwater to transport contaminants from LANL to the Rio Grande during the 61 years LANL has existed?

2. If so, have contaminants from LANL reached the Rio Grande?

The answer to the first question is yes. Contaminants traveling along fast flow paths may reach the Rio Grande in less than 61 years.

The answer to the second question is also yes. LANL-derived contaminants have been detected in springs along the Rio Grande. High explosives have been found in Ancho Spring and Spring 6 and perchlorate has been found in Springs …
