An Exploration Of My Undergraduate Poetry Works, Clover O'Mordha
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Throughout my years at the University of Akron, I have explored my creative writing, focusing on poetry, and developed a distinct style. Analysis Of The High School Math Desmos Curriculum, Marlaina Kurt
Analysis Of The High School Math Desmos Curriculum, Marlaina Kurt
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In this research project, the research question of “How does the online curriculum and resources on Desmos impact student learning and success in the classroom?” will be addressed. The goal of this project is to analyze different activities on the Desmos website for high school students and see how effective they would be at increasing student learning. The different Desmos sections where these activities can be found are: Exponential Functions, Functions, Inequalities, Linear Functions, Linear Systems, Quadratic Functions, and Modeling. There are 50 total activities within these groups, and these selected activities will be analyzed for this project. To reach …

Does Racial Discrimination Exist In The Nba?, Logan Kendall
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper aims to examines the affect of race on compensation for NBA players. Based on prior research, I pose the hypothesis that racial discrimination does exist in the NBA with there being a premium for white players. A second hypothesis I present based on the previous research is that the premium for white players exist for only some groups of players and for other groups there with not exist discrimination based on player race. By using career data from every player who played in the 2019-2020 NBA season and their 2019-2020 salaries, a few different models where ran. The …
Late Assyrian Plain Simple Ware: A Ceramic Analysis, Tasha Hunter
Late Assyrian Plain Simple Ware: A Ceramic Analysis, Tasha Hunter
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The focus of this project will be to firmly establish, characterize, and define the range of traits that describe the most common fabric type of the pottery found at Ziyaret Tepe, which was called by the excavators and ceramic experts Plain Simple Ware (code designation LA01). To characterize and describe the range of traits of Plain Simple Ware from Ziyaret Tepe, ceramic analysis, specifically, a method called ceramic petrography was employed in this study of thirty samples of pottery. The results include confirmation that the clay used to produce the pottery had mineral deposits consistent with the geomorphology of the …
Microarray Data Analysis And Classification Of Cancers, Grant Gates
Microarray Data Analysis And Classification Of Cancers, Grant Gates
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
When it comes to cancer, there is no standardized approach for identifying new cancer classes nor is there a standardized approach for assigning cancer tumors to existing classes. These two ideas are known as class discovery and class prediction. For a cancer patient to receive proper treatment, it is important that the type of cancer be accurately identified. For my Senior Honors Project, I would like to use this opportunity to research a topic in bioinformatics. Bioinformatics incorporates a few different subjects into one including biology, computer science and statistics. An intricate method for class discovery and class prediction is …

A Pedagogical Analysis Of Select Etudes From Jakob Dont’S 24 Etudes And Caprices, Op. 35, Daniella Greene
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The study of etudes is essential for all musicians to learn and practice the technical challenges of their instrument in a practical way. There is a large selection of etudes for the violin, created and collected by numerous composers targeted for all levels of playing. This document will focus on a select number of etudes from the first half of “24 Etudes and Caprices, Opus 35,” by Jakob Dont. The analysis of the etudes will include descriptions of the technical challenges in the left and right hands, recommended practice sequences, and variations on the etude to further challenge the student …

Decision Trees: Predicting Future Losses For Insurance Data, Amanda Lahrmann
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Big data is a term that has come to the spotlight for companies within recent years. Data analysis and business intelligence have become prominent sectors of companies and agencies. But what is big data? How has it impacted large companies and agencies? Why must it be embraced?
The best way to approach utilizing a big data set is to establish a question to answer. For this data set, the question that must be answered is “What variables cause a loss to occur?” To answer this question, first, we must understand what is meant by a “loss”, and take a look …

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis Piezoelectric Design, Letia Bass, Michaela N. Mccrae, Ethan W. Goodman, Joesph W. Mazur
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project is a continuation into the design and implementation of a Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) device that will be used to conduct high frequency testing on tire tread compounds. The design requirements necessary were to design a device that will produce a target frequency of 10 kHz with a 0.05% strain, while being at room temperature. The 3-D model developed by the previous year’s students was improved upon and new parts were designed as well. The assemblies (most importantly the connector piece) were 3-D modeled using Creo Parametric and analyzed with COMSOL Multiphysics. A new design involving flexures was …

Foundation For Analysis Of Early Childhood Intervention For Hearing Loss: Birth To Three, Katherine E. Fike
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this study is to create a foundation for the analysis of early intervention programs for children ages birth to three, with hearing loss. By providing a guide into intervention currently available in the state of Ohio following the public law requirements, parents of children with hearing loss will be better informed and more capable of providing tools to help their children excel. This paper will simplify the language of Ohio public laws regarding services for hearing impaired individuals, explain the benefits of early intervention, and present information on how to locate resources in each county. The paper …
