Research on stress and burnout and their influence on empathy, engagement, and retention, in healthcare support staff is scarce in the literature. The theoretical framework for this study was the conservation of resources (COR) theory which claims that when people are stressed, emotionally exhausted, and experiencing burnout, they protect and preserve their physical and mental resources from becoming depleted by reducing their effort and withdrawing from work. A topic that has not been examined is beginning expatriate English medium teachers (EMTs) with 5 years or less of teaching experience in the United Arab Emirates and the relationship between using individualized, self-initiated wellness paradigms and stress, job burnout, and intent to leave the teaching profession. Employee turnover is an inherent challenge encountered by managers at nonprofit organizations. Nurses may experience job stress and burnout due to the amount of hours worked and demanding schedules. At one hospital, nurse turnover rates were high in medical-surgical units. Surveys and interviews conducted by hospital administration found that the bedside nurses were dissatisfied with scheduling practices and that this dissatisfaction could lead to heightened turnover. More than 55% of hospitals in the United States have not translated retention initiatives into a formal retention strategy. In the United States, the high turnover rate of registered nurses and indications of a future shortage of registered nurses is detrimental to healthcare organizations. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine whether, in hospitals, work engagement and job satisfaction predicted registered nurse turnover intention. The theoretical framework was Fishbein and Ajzen's theory of reasoned action. Probability sampling was used to identify 155 participants, all full-time registered nurses with 2 or more years of employment in New York hospitals.
