Strategies For Employee Retention In Nonprofit Organizations, Gentri Mabelann White
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Low employee retention is one of the main challenges for managers and negatively impacts an organization's ability to survive and remain competitive. Using Herzberg's two-factor theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies nonprofit sector managers use to retain employees. The participants included 4 managers from 4 Illinois nonprofit organizations who implemented successful strategies for employee retention. Data were collected using semistructured, face-to-face interviews, company documents, and archival records. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, which revealed 3 themes: employee fit, workplace culture, and employee feedback. The implications for positive social change include …

Classroom Teacher And Adminstrators Perception Of The Teacher Librarians' Contribution To Student Academic Achievement, Barbara Florence Dowell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Library research studies have provided evidence that teacher-librarians (TLs) impact student academic success; nevertheless, TLs statewide and internationally are at a critical juncture due to stakeholder groups' ambiguous perceptions regarding their influence on student achievement. The problem in this study involves a local independent school district's lack of conclusive evidence to demonstrate TLs' contribution to student achievement on standardized testing. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of TLs, classroom teachers (CTs), and administrative staff (AS) concerning student achievement as instructed by local TLs. Using Piaget's cognitive theory and Mezirow's transformative learning theory, this qualitative case study …
Experiences Of Postsecondary Students With Physical Disabilities With Online Learning, Amanda Elizabeth Cole
Experiences Of Postsecondary Students With Physical Disabilities With Online Learning, Amanda Elizabeth Cole
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over one tenth of students in postsecondary education have a documented disability as defined by the Americans with Disability Act. However, faculty and course designers often lack understanding of these students' experiences, which leads to insufficient accommodations. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of students with physical disabilities (SWD) in online courses. The research was grounded in self-determination theory, which posits 3 basic needs for self-actualization: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. This theory in combination with universal design for learning provided a lens for exploring these experiences. Data collection included 8 interviews with postsecondary students …
What Drives Underprepared Students From The First Year On, Shanetta S. Lillard
What Drives Underprepared Students From The First Year On, Shanetta S. Lillard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
College students often enter college academically unprepared, as evidenced by low high school cumulative GPAs or poor SAT scores. In response to this problem, administrators at a 4-year university in the Mid-Atlantic region of the Unites States implemented an intensive, semester-long program to introduce and acclimate conditionally admitted students to the rigors of collegiate life. The purpose of this study was to understand how to assist students in moving from Year 1 to full admission and beyond. In accordance with Bandura's reciprocal causation of social cognitive theory model, the research questions centered on conditionally admitted students' descriptions of their experiences …
Female Sexual Abuse Survivors And The Therapeutic Relationship, Tracy J. Hollingworth
Female Sexual Abuse Survivors And The Therapeutic Relationship, Tracy J. Hollingworth
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood abuse can impact the survivors' life in many ways. Children learn various skills from their caregivers, such as the tools needed to develop and maintain healthy relationships. When a child is abused by their caregiver, there can be a drastic impact on how the child perceives the world, and the therapeutic relationship is important in the healing process. This interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) study explored the lived experiences of therapists who work with adult women who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse to better understand the effects that childhood sexual abuse has on the therapeutic relationship. The theoretical base …
Geographically Distributed Employees' Perceptions Of Employee Assistance Program Access, Davina Smith
Geographically Distributed Employees' Perceptions Of Employee Assistance Program Access, Davina Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many investigators have documented high levels of stress in the U.S. workplace and the underutilization of employee assistance programs (EAP). Researchers in other studies have concluded that an employee's perception of a service influences participation and service use. However, the perceptions of geographically distributed employees, who represent a growing population, have not been sufficiently examined. The purpose of this study was to investigate geographically distributed employees' perceptions regarding access to EAP stress management services to address the problem of EAP underutilization. Organizational justice theory served as the theoretical framework. The study design was generic qualitative. A purposeful sample of 15 …

An Exploration Of Mental Health Practitioners' Perceptions Of Ethical Requirements And Self-Care As Means To Maintain Professional Competence, Ebony Denise Coleman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A mental health practitioner must refrain from partaking in any mental health work if personal problems interfere with his or her ability to provide services in a competent manner. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how mental health practitioners manage personal problems to stay ethically compliant. Previous research has indicated that a significant amount of literature has revealed the causes and damaging effects of burnout among mental health workers. However, there remains an important gap in the current literature that links burnout directly with competently providing quality care. Ethical compliance, self-care, and mental health practitioners' perceptions were …

Bereavement In Online Graduate Students: Perspectives On Academic Success And Interventions, Edythe Marie Bouldin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this qualitative study was to fill an existing gap in research on bereavement and graduate students. The study explored how bereavement and grief affect a person physically, mentally, and cognitively. Prior studies have addressed bereavement in undergraduate college students, but little research has focused on online graduate students and bereavement. This study fills that gap in the literature allowing university personnel and the public access to an understanding as to how online graduate students' bereavement affects their academic performance and how they perceive their university supports them during their time of bereavement. This exploration used a case …

Knowledge management (KM) is vital for an organization to succeed in a highly dynamic and competitive world.
