Lantern Slides For Engineering Instruction In The Early 20th Century, Jill H. Powell

Cornell's Engineering Library received a donation of some 360 lantern slides from the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, which were used as visual aids in industrial engineering classes in the 1920s-1930s. They include pictures of machines, people operating machines, organized recreation in factories, automobile assembly, and sample hiring practices, many of which were discriminatory. We would like to get the slides digitized, and will discuss the experience of applying for a grant.

Academic libraries often focus most, if not all, of their collection development efforts on supporting resources that directly support their campus research or course curricula (with good reason!). However, there is a growing call in the library literature that highlights the benefits of recreational reading collections in academic library settings. However, the pace of adopting new technologies in libraries has been limited by factors such as funding constraints, privacy concerns, and a non-profit focus. This proposal aims to explore the transformative potential of advanced AI tools, specifically large language models (LLMs), in the field of librarianship. During the summer of 2023, librarians at the University of Rochester encouraged use of the LabArchives for Education module by introducing it to librarians and faculty. We did an environmental scan of the literature and the vendor website to glean benefits and challenges of using this tool. All liaison librarians were encouraged to get accounts and play with the tool. We started hosting vendor provided webinars and inviting discussion. I'll share the process and results of our efforts.

This presentation will introduce a collaborative project between library and STEM faculty. The goal of the project is the creation of an open educational resource (OER) for first-year college students entering STEM fields. The final product may be an adaptation of an existing college success OER or supplemental resources. A driving force of the project is the recognition that success in STEM fields in college and beyond requires knowledge and skills distinct from and in addition to general college success skills.

Sixty-eight institutions in the SCELC Consortium signed a Springer Nature Open Access or "transformative agreement" starting in 2023. This presentation will take a look at the SCELC publishing data leading up to the agreement from 2018 to 2022, and also a look at the publishing data for 2023ytd, in order to study the effects of such an agreement. The 2023 data carries an explicit comparison of downloads of the open access papers published with SCELC authors to the closed access papers published by non-SCELC authors in the same journals for the same period of time. You might think that the collections of a major library would be unaffected by cultural prejudices. However, even the University of Rochester's collections are sadly lacking in works by and about scientists of color. Our poster describes our work to rectify this situation in order to inspire current and future BIPOC students to go into STEM fields. One scientist who we feature is Joy Buolamwini, who recently earned her PhD from MIT’s Media Lab. She noticed that analyses of photographs are often biased, so she formed the Algorithmic Justice League to study and correct that problem. Our collections are more …

Call numbers play a central role in the ability of libraries to shelve books next to other books on the same or similar subject. With e-books making up an increasing proportion of library holdings, it is important that e-books can be e-shelved and discovered along with their print counterparts. At the start of 2021, e-books in the Cornell University Library Catalog did not have the same detailed classification numbers in their MARC records that print books receive. This hobbles attempts to make e-books available on virtual shelves for serendipitous discovery and to distinguish collections of e-books in related subjects like …

Study of individual differences in learning processes has a long history across several lines of psychology inquiry. Learning style theory (LST) is arguably a broadly recognized approach to education, embraced by educators theoretically and practically. Accommodation of individual learning styles with differential instruction is supported and endorsed globally, and well-funded. Yet empirical evidence in the literature that examines augmented learning achieved via learning styles accommodation in pedagogical practices is not compelling. Learning style theories are regularly researched in psychological and educational literature, and questions about the validity of findings persist. RIT Libraries implemented the LibGuides 2.0 CMS in August 2015, but patron interests change over the course of five years. How can I discover whether my guides are still capturing the interest of the students and faculty at RIT? Using some simple charting and statistical tools in Microsoft Excel, I was able to deduce patterns in usage for both my subject and non-subject guides. Whether classes have moved to online delivery or the library's COVID safety procedures include quarantining returned materials, chances are regular, print-based course reserves are not feasible for the Fall 2020 semester. This short presentation will outline the process used by the Alfred University Libraries to evaluate which reserve materials needed alternative access, determine what options were available, and implement changes to preserve access for students. Challenges included limited person-power and time for library staff to devote to analyzing usage and options, limited time for faculty outreach, and limited budget for new materials. The rising prevalence of anxiety and depression, commonly known as mental distress, and their associated health care costs necessitate a change in disease management. To improve outcome, there is a need to move away from the one size fits all approach and personalize mental health prevention and treatment strategies. During the summer of 2020, due to COVID-19 and preventative financial measures taken by the college, 70% of the library staff at St. John Fisher College were furloughed for approximately three months. This presentation is from the viewpoint of an employee who was furloughed and returned during wave one. What did the process of rebuilding look like? What words did we even use to describe what was happening?

Open Science aims to make research publicly available— from the data collected and methods used, to peer review processes and educational materials. Open science emerged in the late 20th century as a way to formalize the practice that scientists had ostensibly engaged in for centuries, and where the newly-formed internet could house materials for others to access. Principles of open science include Open Data, Open Source, Open Methodology, Open Peer Review, Open Access, and Open Educational Resources. Most of those principles are not exclusive to scientific research; indeed, many researchers across academia engage in similar practices in their own disciplines. …

The Changing Reference Landscape: An Assessment Of Mann Library's Combined Service Desk, Ryan Tolnay

This project examined and assessed reference services at Albert R. Mann Library following the creation of a combined service desk. I conducted a literature review and created a survey to determine what mode of research help patrons preferred. Survey respondents were fairly evenly split between their preferences and often stated the same reasons for their preference- convenience and accessibility. Recommendations include instituting a user experience team and training all access services employees on reference techniques and library resources. This will provide patrons with more accurate answers to their questions and continue to improve library services.

Cornell University hosted its inaugural Ada Lovelace Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in 2019. Led by two librarians, this event is a chance to highlight the contributions of women past in present in the Sciences. Ada Lovelace is considered the first computer programmer and is a good example of the invisible contributions women have made in the field of the sciences. Participants learned how to edit in Wikipedia and both Cornell affiliates and people in the Ithaca community were welcome. We highlighted female-identified Cornell professors in the Sciences, https://guides.library.cornell.edu/adalovelace, with underdeveloped or no Wikipedia pages for real world examples as well.

This presentation will compare and contrast academic integrity orientation activities delivered in the Fall 2018 Semester with those delivered in the Fall 2019 Semester. At St. John Fisher College, Biopharmacology is an upper level elective taken by chemistry, biology and pharmaceutical chemistry majors. The final project for class was a poster, and students were encouraged to use resources beyond the scholarly article. The science librarian was embedded into the class and had 10 weekly, online assignments with students. Over the last decade, many academic libraries have added a discovery layer to their integrated library systems (ILS) in an effort to improve access to information and streamline the users’ search experience. The Willard J. Houghton Library, a small academic library at Houghton College, recently migrated to WMS Discovery and implemented such a discovery layer into its OPAC, along with many other related changes to both the library’s backend and “onstage” functions. To jump-start the careers of graduate students and postdocs in the fields of engineering, math and the physical sciences, Cornell University Library held a free workshop, “Research From Start to Publish,” in January 2019. Librarians and guest faculty members led sessions on topics including intellectual property, writing/presentation skills, data management, and productivity tools. Faculty journal editors discussed how to get published, open access experts discussed “Why not Publish in arXiv and Be Done,” and librarians highlighted the wealth of library resources in the session “$2.5 Million-a-Year Worth of Information at Your Fingertips.”

The reproducibility crisis in published scientific work is changing the way that research is designed and conducted. Librarians in academic institutions can play a key role in promoting improved adherence to evidence-based guidelines for performing literature reviews. The Cornell Systematic Review Team has developed a checklist, https://osf.io/2edg9/?pid=ezqpd, that can be used in research consultations as a conversation framework when assisting patrons with review design. A Team-Based Service Model: Mann Library, Cornell University, Erica M. Johns, Tobi Hines, Ashley Shea

Mann Library began piloting a new team-based service model in August 2019 to replace the liaison model. By separating into teams of instruction or research support and removing departmental outreach from individual librarian responsibilities, Mann librarians have been able to prioritize their functional areas of expertise that were increasing in demand and devote more time to innovative new projects. We have begun our assessment of the new model which will continue through 2020, but we are also taking an iterative approach as we implement these changes, gathering feedback from staff and course correcting as necessary.
