The Archaeology Of Masculinity: The Process Of Personal Archaeology In The Creative Arts, Lindsay James Duncan Jan 1995

The Archaeology Of Masculinity: The Process Of Personal Archaeology In The Creative Arts, Lindsay James Duncan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Contemporary gender studies reveal the evolution of a plurality of masculinities since World War Two. The associated social change surrounding masculinity has demanded a re-evaluation of gender roles by Western men who, historically, have not been encouraged to be introspective about their emotional development. However, when compelled by circumstances to examine some of the forces which have moulded their lives and which keep them in bondage they become aware that the traditional values surrounding patriarchal politics, women, war, religion and death are no longer adequate. A major factor in this inadequacy is that traditional role models have been superseded by …

Evaluation Of A Correspondence Fat Loss Program For Men, Anne-Maree Parrish Jan 1995

Evaluation Of A Correspondence Fat Loss Program For Men, Anne-Maree Parrish

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study compares fat loss of 45 Australian men involved in a correspondence 'waist' loss program' with participants in a group based 'waist' loss program (O'Neill 1993). The format of the correspondence program and the group based program is very similar. Initially, it was believed that the group based program may be more effective than the correspondence program, as the men in the correspondence program did not have group support. The correspondence participants received a kit containing audio cassettes, book, handouts and a tape measure to enable them to conduct their waist Joss program at home. Evaluation questionnaires were posted …

Barriers To Providing Quality Nutrition Care For People With Developmental Disabilities Living In Group Homes: A Survey Of The Warringah Area, Nicole Circuitt

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Changes in the living conditions of people with developmental disabilities, from institutions to group homes, has meant a shift of responsibility for nutrition care. Within the Waningah Area, the high dependence of residents, and hence their reliance on staff members being educated and knowledgeable regarding their needs, raises doubts over the quality of nutrition care being delivered. The purpose of this study was to deterinine the nutrition knowledge of staff of group homes, and whether nutrition education for staff in group homes is required. Seventy per cent of an estimated 205 staff returned questionnaires for analysis. Eighty-three per cent of …

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

School canteens can have an important influence on the dietary intake of school students. This study aimed to measure and improve the availability and sales of foods which are low in fat, sugar and/or salt and high in fibre in school canteens in Western NSW. This can be achieved through increasing both the school canteens' awareness, and the availability of healthy foods. It also is vital to establish a network between school canteens and food industry.

Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: The Affect Of Obesity On Blood Glucose Control, Kathryn Fitzgerald Jan 1995

Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: The Affect Of Obesity On Blood Glucose Control, Kathryn Fitzgerald

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Poor glycaemic control has recently been associated with the rate of onset and severity of long term complications associated with diabetes. Obesity is one of the factors known to influence the level of glycaemic control, however, few studies have looked at the relationship between obesity and glycaemic control in populations with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). The aim of this study was to assess the level of glycaemic control of those above the acceptable weight range, to those within the acceptable weight, and to determine whether weight control is an important goal for the IDDM population. Twenty one people with …

Traumatic Stress Reactions In Police, Jeannie Higgins Jan 1995

Traumatic Stress Reactions In Police, Jeannie Higgins

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A personal construct model of traumatic stress reactions has been developed to predict the relationships between personal, trauma, and recovery factors. This model was evaluated in two studies with police. This research establishes some normative baseline epidemiological data on the levels of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in novice recruits and inexperienced police. The major implications of a personal construct model of traumatisation for police and policing organisations are discussed.

The cross-sectional study included 750 recruits and inexperienced police. The repeated measures study re-assessed 193 recruits after one year of policing. Data were obtained on history, personal theories, potentially traumatising events …

Contemporary Aboriginal Songs And Songwriters: Post-Colonialism, Categorisation And Orality, David Beniuk

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This dissertation examines contemporaiy Australian Aboriginal songs and songwriters within the context of post-colonialism. It argues that contemporary Aboriginal songs are post-colonial texts and that post-colonial literary theories can be adapted and apphed to them. It considers a range of post-colonial theories to arrive at a working model which posits the central characteristic of metonymy. It then considers the related issue of the social conditions which effect contemporary Aboriginal songs, particularly the problems and consequences of the categorisation of Aboriginal songs and Aboriginal songwriters. The dissertation then considers the relationship between traditional Aboriginal orality and contemporary Aboriginal songs, examining hnes …

What Tradies Know About What Tradies Know: An Exploratory Study Of The Views Of Trade Instructors About Knowledge And Knowing, Colin H. Ducker Jan 1995

What Tradies Know About What Tradies Know: An Exploratory Study Of The Views Of Trade Instructors About Knowledge And Knowing, Colin H. Ducker

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study began in observations about an apparent tension between the views held by trade instructors and the curriculum and instructional formulations with which they work in the vocational education and training setting. Three research questions emerged: Do trade instructors use frameworks or systems of beliefs, values, attitudes and feelings that guide their approach to knowledge and knowing? What are the main typologies that underpin these frameworks? Do the views of trade instructors embody characteristic ways of presenting or perceiving reality? These questions guided a systematic search for understandings of the ways trade instructors construe knowledge. It involved uncovering, clarifying, …

A Comparison Of Two Instruments To Assess Spiritual Well-Being, Peter Cleasby Jan 1995

A Comparison Of Two Instruments To Assess Spiritual Well-Being, Peter Cleasby

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

An exploratory factor analysis was performed on two spiritual well-being instrunnents: Paloutzian & Ellisons spiritual well-being scale (SWBS), and the JAREL spiritual well-being scale (JSWBS). The scales were combined and administered to a combined convenience sample (n=130) comprising of undergraduate nursing students (n=56 & n=55) and an ambulatory oncology group (n=19). The two scales were found to have a high correlation (r=0.8187). The underlying subscale structure of the SWBS was generally supported by the analysis. The JSWBS subscale structure was not supported by the analysis.

A Survey Of The Needs Of The Users Of A Rural Mental Health Service, Brian Phillips Jan 1995

A Survey Of The Needs Of The Users Of A Rural Mental Health Service, Brian Phillips

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Due to distance, geography, rural culture and smaller populations it is not possible for urban service models to be effectively transferred to rural districts. A review of the literature shows that these characteristics must be considered when developing a rural service. Comparison of the results of a needs survey with information available from the CRISP database of the Cooma Mental Health Team and population data, confirms the impact of distance on service provision and accessibility, and the importance of small rural hospitals to extension of services across distances. Depression emerged as the predominant presenting problem identified by staff and clients. …

The Effect Of The Carbohydrate Intake On The Glycaemic Control Of People With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Kathy Hodson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The aim of the project is to determine the importance of the currently recommended high complex carbohydrate, high dietary fibre dietary regime, by the American Diabetes Association, in the control of Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus. For instance, are there some people with IDDM who consume the recommended high complex carbohydrate, high dietary fibre and low simple carbohydrate diet who nevertheless find great difficulty in managing their diabetes control, while other people with IDDM consume a low complex carbohydrate and low fibre diet and manage to maintain diabetes control ? Does the carbohydrate intake have an effect on the glycaemic control …

Does Alcohol Consumption Affect The Glycosylated Haemoglobin Values Of An Individual With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus?, Erin Kirk Jan 1995

Does Alcohol Consumption Affect The Glycosylated Haemoglobin Values Of An Individual With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus?, Erin Kirk

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Hyperglycaemia amongst individuals with Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), can lead to the development of chronic diabetic complications. The Glycosylated Haemoglobin (HbAlc) assay retrospectively measures the extent of an individual's hyperglycaemic episodes in the last 8 - 1 2 weeks. Elevated HbAlc values significantly correlate with the development of diabetic complications. Previous research concerning the hyperglycaemic effects of alcohol among individuals with IDDM is conflicting. Authors have reported contrasting results, ranging from the impairment of glucose tolerance, to the enhancement of glucose tolerance, to no effects on glucose metabolism at all. This uncertain relationship is also corroborated by the previous …

Non-Academic Factors As Predictors Of Success In The First Year Of An Undergraduate Nursing Course, Sharon Andrew Jan 1995

Non-Academic Factors As Predictors Of Success In The First Year Of An Undergraduate Nursing Course, Sharon Andrew

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Academic entry qualifications of nursing students have been shown to be unsatisfactory in the prediction of academic success in undergraduate nursing courses. For many students, non-academic factors will be extremely important for academic success. Therefore, in this study, non-academic factors and their relationship to academic performance in the first year of an undergraduate nursing course were investigated. The study uses quantitative methodology to investigate this relationship. The non-academic factors were grouped into categories: demographic data, social characteristics, vocational choice, gender characteristics and self-efficacy. Bandura's (1977; 1986) theory of self-efficacy was used to develop a research tool.

Reducing The Incidence And Severity Of Staff Manual Handling Injuries Through Continuous Improvement, Susan Catherine Goor Jan 1995

Reducing The Incidence And Severity Of Staff Manual Handling Injuries Through Continuous Improvement, Susan Catherine Goor

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Occupational Health & Safety (O.H.&S.) is currently legislated federally and within each state. Workplace injuries and diseases extract a significant human and financial cost per annum, with these costs continuing to escalate. There Is substantial evidence that effective safety programs designed to meet the needs of each workplace decrease the incidence and severity of workplace injuries and diseases which in turn result in financial and human benefits. Some organisations view safety management as an integral component of Total Quality Management (TQM) and are implementing TQM strategies to achieve improvements. The role of management is seen as crucial in implementing effective …

Devices And Desires: Constructing The Intrauterine Device, 1908-1988, Ann Dugdale

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

By 1908 a new, doctor inserted, scientific contraceptive had gained some acceptance in areas of Germany. This technology became known as the intrauterine contraceptive device. By 1930 it enjoyed limited international success through its alliance with the International Sex Reform movement. The devices became linked with campaigns to take the suffrage struggle into the private sphere, a technological means for achieving modernity for women. In the 1960s the Population Council remade this contraceptive system as a mass produced global network of population control. Then in the 1970s the Dalkon Shield became synonymous with corporate misconduct. The women's health movement accused …

The Social Shaping Of Children's Manufactured Toys, W. Varney Jan 1995

The Social Shaping Of Children's Manufactured Toys, W. Varney

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Children's manufactured toys both reflect and are shaped by many aspects of our society. This thesis specifically takes up two prominent social factors in the social shaping of toys. Firstly, commercial priorities have increasingly penetrated the design of toys, this being one aspect of the corporate organisation of children's play and leisure. An integral part of this has been an emphasis on the commodity and the life of commodities into which these toys fit, which subjugates more traditional play values. The thesis provides an explanation for much of the social shaping of today's most heavily marketed and popular toys by …

Skill And The Commodification Of Labour In New South Wales 1840-1915, Ben Maddison Jan 1995

Skill And The Commodification Of Labour In New South Wales 1840-1915, Ben Maddison

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis historicises the concept of skill. It does so firstly by developing a typology of skill, identifying and distinguishing the "artisanal" from the industrial concept. The artisanal concept of skill existed as part of the cluster of pre-industrial European attitudes to society and labour, the principal emphasis of which was their existence outside the market relations of capitalism. In contrast, the industrial concept of skill meshed absolutely with the characteristic features of capitalist social and productive relations. Not only did it inscribe specialised and mechanised labour with skill, but it also positively embraced the notion of labour, and skill …
