The expedition component requires a two day one night preliminary expedition and a two day and one night qualifying expedition. This research explores the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award Expedition in terms of active involvement, cooperative teamwork, self-confidence, social effectiveness, stress management and time efficiency during these expeditions.
This research involves a case study of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award program at Southern Highlands …
Evaluation Of An Eight Week Modified Exercise Program For Overweight Children, Brodie Cambourne
Evaluation Of An Eight Week Modified Exercise Program For Overweight Children, Brodie Cambourne
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The incidence of overweight and obesity amongst Australian children is high and steadily increasing. Reasons offered for this trend in childhood obesity include increase in availability of foods high in fat and decreased opportunity to participate in regular exercise. Recent research is bringing light to the difficulties overweight children have participating in daily living tasks. These difficulties are a result of the excess weight carried by these children and include a decreased range of motion, impaired balance and co-ordination and increased energy expenditure during daily tasks. A solution for combating this increase in childhood obesity, may be to provide children …

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
In 2000, the University of Wollongong opened a new campus and two education access centres on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. The Faculty of Arts implemented a new degree, the Bachelor of Arts (Community and Environment), as part of this initiative and the first year of implementation of this new degree is the focus of the study. The purpose of the study was to inform policy and practice at the University of Wollongong and to contribute to the small body of research in the area. A qualitative case study approach was used to investigate the experience of …
Facilitating Learning: Mine, Yours And Others' :Gaining Insight Into The Facilitation Of Corporate Experiential Learning Programs Through The Lenses Of Personal Experience And The Learning Styles Analysis, Tracey Dickson
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Writing and research on facilitation of experiential learning, including corporate programs, predominantly focuses upon what the facilitator is to do, with little or no consideration for where the facilitation occurs. Using a heuristic research process that involves an immersion in the dominant literature on experiential learning (with an emphasis upon North American literature), and through the use of the 'lenses' of personal experience and the use of the Teaming Styles Analysis, this thesis follows a journey of exploration into the world of experiential learning. The journey includes forays into deconstruction of a popular article on facilitation as well as exploring …
Place-Making In The East Kimberley: A Study Of Land Interests And Symbolic Capital In North West Australia, Ruth Lane
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis addresses the relationship between representations of place and embodied activity and experience. To translate this question into the context of the East Kimberley in the late 1990s, I focus on the manner in which planning processes since the 1960s have represented the East Kimberley as a place and ascribed value to land. Employing the concept of 'land interests', I describe in detail changing relationships to land for Aboriginal people, farmers and tourists since the 1960s. I focus on mobility, as an indicator of their embodied experience, and tease out aspects of the social identities of these groups that …
The Intensification Of Labour Market Polarisation In Metals Manufacturing In Australia In The 1990s, Terri Mylett
The Intensification Of Labour Market Polarisation In Metals Manufacturing In Australia In The 1990s, Terri Mylett
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
In Australia during the 1990s, jobs offered by employers had increasingly differentiated standards of wages, conditions and security. For some workers, this has meant experiencing wages and working conditions that challenge the Australian tradition that employment will be sufficient for avoiding poverty and securing the reproduction of labour. The trend of polarisation nationally was also evident in the Metals Manufacturing industry and in the lllawarra region. The two most significant developments in Metals Manufacturing in the 1990s were (i) the rise in casual employment (including labour hire); and (ii) the masculinisation of employment in the industry, including non-standard employment. These …
The Colonisation Of Scientific Uncertainty: Liminality & Agency In Science Boundary Work, Sandrine A. Thérèse
The Colonisation Of Scientific Uncertainty: Liminality & Agency In Science Boundary Work, Sandrine A. Thérèse
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The thesis focusses on the traditional problem of demarcation in science through the study of the politics of scientific "boundary work" and cultural cartography amidst scientific controversies where claims about the constitution of science and its "other" are asserted, contested and renegotiated. Human and non-human agents and agency are characterised via recourse to a critical practice theory and performative idiom approach where dialectical interactions between social structures and between collective, individual and natural agents are axiomatic. The study aims to provide a multi-sited ethnography of how notions of scientific convention and deviance are (re)defined in the course of scientific practice. …
Half The Story: Olympic Women On Abc News Online, Dianne M. Jones
Half The Story: Olympic Women On Abc News Online, Dianne M. Jones
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This study examines the treatment of ehte Australian female and male athletes in the new sports media. A content analysis of Olympic Games coverage, within a selected sample of bulletins on ABC News Online, was conducted from September 13 to October 2, 2000. The analysis addressed both the amount and nature of coverage during the sample period. The data suggest the biased practices of the traditional sports media may have migrated to online sports journalism. Yet they also indicate an improvement in both the extent of women's sports coverage and the range of sports covered. Female and male athletes received …
Relationship Between Teacher Learning And School Culture, Wendy M. Bean
Relationship Between Teacher Learning And School Culture, Wendy M. Bean
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
On school culture and teacher learning.'It is a culture with very high expectations from both parents and staff. Where everyone has the belief everyone will achieve, with this principal the expectations on us are higher now. The accountability is more succinct. It has always been a culture where the staff agrees on the same sort of philosophy. When we talk about how children learn to read etc there is never much disagreement. When there is some disagreement it leads to discussion. I have worked harder here than anywhere but it is all for good. Everything is improving, my teaching and …
Teaching Primary School Children In Single-Gendered Classes, Robin C. Wills
Teaching Primary School Children In Single-Gendered Classes, Robin C. Wills
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This study demonstrates that when upper primary school boys and girls from low socio-economic environments are educated separately in single-gendered classrooms in a co-educational school, there is potential for them to make positive educational and social gains. Moreover, contrary to the accepted, conventional, but untheorised practice of coeducational classrooms. This study demonstrates that the single-gendered primary school class does have the potential to provide a unique learning environment. The teachers in this study encouraged confidence building and social cohesiveness as essential, foundational attributes of the learning group. When the teachers became aware of the potential for single-gendered classes to develop …
Analysis Of Growth Data For Breastfed Infants And Its Relevance To Breastfeeding, Emer Cooper
Analysis Of Growth Data For Breastfed Infants And Its Relevance To Breastfeeding, Emer Cooper
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Monitoring infants growth in the first year of life is a complex issue. It has been almost twenty years since the last Australian research was published on the topic of infant feeding methods and growth and no studies have compared Australian breastfed infants with the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) 1977 reference longer than three months. The NCHS Hamill et al. (1977) standard is the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) recommended guideline currently accepted in Australia. It was decided to explore a sample of breastfeeding women of European descent and their infants from metropolitan Sydney and semi-rural NSW. The …
Changing Lives: A Personal Construct Approach To Menopause, Heather Foster
Changing Lives: A Personal Construct Approach To Menopause, Heather Foster
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis argues the need for an exploration of the meanings, and pathways to reconstruction, of women anticipating or experiencing menopause, and that a personal construct approach can provide a creative context for meeting this need. Very few psychologically based interventions for menopausal women have been reported in the menopausal literature. I describe my development of a personal construct model of menopause, consisting of two major meanings of menopause, and five patterns of construing, including a pattern for intervention. I also describe two studies. Study 1 was an exploration of the meanings that women used in construing their expectation and …
Filipino Women And Their Citizenship In Australia: In Search Of Political Space, Glenda Lynna Anne Tibe-Bonifacio
Filipino Women And Their Citizenship In Australia: In Search Of Political Space, Glenda Lynna Anne Tibe-Bonifacio
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This research examined the meaning and practise of Australian citizenship in the lives of migrant Filipino women in Australia. It utilized the life story approach and participant observation in Sydney and Wollongong. The narratives were analysed using a combination of feminist theoretical models of women's citizenship to underscore the different ways they construct a political space in negotiating their subject position as wives, mothers, paid workers, volunteers, electors, and members of community groups. Filipino women have a high valuation of Australian citizenship. Their motivations to become Australian citizens are not only based on the practical benefits derived from that status …
Electrophysiological And Behavioural Indices Of Simulated Recognition Memory Impairment, Hilarie P. Tardif
Electrophysiological And Behavioural Indices Of Simulated Recognition Memory Impairment, Hilarie P. Tardif
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis examined the use of event-related potentials as a means of detecting feigned recognition memory impairment. In seven studies, undergraduate students were instructed either to complete a recognition memory test to the best of their abilities, or to simulate accidentrelated memory loss. These studies extended previous research by investigating electrophysiological differences between the control and malingering tasks (1) for stimuli which differed in linguistic frequency, (2) in tests which varied the format of word presentation, (3) during the initial encoding of the stimuli, and (4) using ERP components not previously considered in studies investigating the detection of malingering. The …
Exploration Without Boundaries: Virtual Voyages Into Virtual Landscapes, Hilary Frances Rhodes
Exploration Without Boundaries: Virtual Voyages Into Virtual Landscapes, Hilary Frances Rhodes
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Exploration Without Boundaries is a visual digital media exploration reflecting industrial, technological and environmental change over time. It comprises an interactive CD ROM, a book, and a gallery installation. Exploration Without Boundaries is distinctive in that it describes natural and imagined worlds in the virtual domain with materials described entirely by means of algorithms and fractals, rather than from photographic textures. This document is an exegesis that assists the viewer in understanding the complexities of Exploration Without Boundaries and to place it in an historical and social context. It addresses aspects of particular theories and issues pertinent to the work, …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of interactive listening and the characteristics of listening comprehension processes for Japanese junior high school students of English. The first aim of this study was to investigate the interplay between the learner’s listening strategies and the speaker’s speech modifications and non-linguistic cues. The second aim was to investigate the listening comprehension processes and listening strategies used by the participants. The methodology employed was primarily qualitative. The literature on listening comprehension models, research areas of difficulties with listening and speech modifications and strategy research were chiefly reviewed. Six selected Japanese junior …
The Hidden Cost Of War: The Psychological Effects Of The Second World War And Indonesian Confrontation On Australian Veterans And Their Families, Kristy Muir
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Psychiatric casualties of war and mental illnesses in veterans have been officially recorded since the First World War. These psychological problems have affected the Australian military and devastated some veterans' lives. This thesis examines the psychological effects of the Second World War and the Indonesian Confrontation on Australian veterans and their families. Oral history testimonies reveal that the social consequences of war are remarkably similar for some ex-service personnel, despite the conflicts they served in. The symptoms of mental illnesses, such as anxiety, depression, social isolation, addiction and nightmares, not only severely debilitate some mentally ill veterans' home, working and …
Teacher Education And Teacher Competencies: A Study Of How A Model Of Teacher Competencies Could Inform Pre-Service Primary Teacher Education In Sri Lanka, Sarath Perera
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This investigation evaluates existing teacher competency statements in the literature in both developed and developing countries. This research was used to develop an appropriate and accessible set of teacher competencies for use in the Sri Lankan context, in particular for use in the National Colleges of Education where primary teacher training is undertaken. Competency statements from numerous sources, and theories of competency-based teaching and learning reviewed within a theoretical framework of teacher epistemology. This research conducted within a qualitative paradigm and includes some quantitative analysis. Teachers in primary education were surveyed in Sri Lanka to ascertain their beliefs and values …

Mastery Of Relationship Conflicts In Psychoanalysis, Jane Martin
Mastery Of Relationship Conflicts In Psychoanalysis, Jane Martin
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This work examined the process and outcome of psychoanalysis by quantifying changes in patient mastery of relationship conflict using the Mastery Scale (Grenyer, 1994) a content-coding measure of changes in interpersonal relationship conflict. Examination of 170 verbatim transcripts from the Penn Psychoanalytic Treatment Collection (Luborsky, Stuart, Friedman, Diguer, Seligman, Bucci, Pulver, Krause, Ermold, Davison, Woody, & Mergenthaler, 2001) showed the path of change for 17 participants (11 women and 6 men) over an average of 4 years (2.5-5.5yrs) of psychoanalysis. Participants in the study were suffering from chronic relationship problems associated with pervasive patterns of psychological ill health for which …
Environmental Correlates Of Adults' Walking Behaviour, Nancy Humpel
Environmental Correlates Of Adults' Walking Behaviour, Nancy Humpel
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Physical inactivity is associated with increased risk of developing chronic diseases. evidence linking physical activity and health outcomes has led to the development of national physical activity guidelines, which focus on moderate-intensity activities.Walking is the most commonly reported moderate-intensity activity and is arguably the most relevant activity for public health interventions targeting adults.
Public health strategies to increase participation in physical activity are now starting focus on supportive factors in the physical environment. A behaviour-specific ecological approach was taken in this thesis. Ecological models of physical activity behaviour identify multiple levels of influence from intrapersonal, interpersonal, social and broader environmental …
My Spouse Is A "Stranger": A Journey Unravelling The Nature Of The Intimate Marital Relationships Of Spousal Caregivers Of Dementia Sufferers From A Personal Construct Perspective, Marilyn Georgina Rudd
My Spouse Is A "Stranger": A Journey Unravelling The Nature Of The Intimate Marital Relationships Of Spousal Caregivers Of Dementia Sufferers From A Personal Construct Perspective, Marilyn Georgina Rudd
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This study unravelled the nature of the intimate marital relationships of spousal caregivers of dementia sufferers from a personal construct perspective. One hundred and twenty four long-term married men and women were interviewed: 61 spousal caregivers (30 husbands and 31 wives) aged between 48 and 88 years, and 63 spouses (30 husbands and 33 wives), of similar age, whose partners did not have dementia. A constructivist model was developed, hypotheses formulated, and both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used to collect the data. However, during the in-depth interviews, many spousal caregivers denied that they were in a "marital relationship" and …
Sustainable Resource And Environmental Management In Tonga: Current Situation, Community Perceptions And A Proposed New Policy Framework, Netatua Pelesikoti
Sustainable Resource And Environmental Management In Tonga: Current Situation, Community Perceptions And A Proposed New Policy Framework, Netatua Pelesikoti
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The success of Tonga's current and future development depends on sustainable management of its natural resources. However, with increasing population, changing socio-economic aspirations and activities, the quality and quantity of the biophysical environment are declining. This is likely to be exacerbated if the major environmental issues are not addressed immediately. Unsustainable practices in agriculture and fishing, and population related pressures such as waste generated and increasing demand for natural resources coupled with a specific system of management have been identified as the major causes of environmental degradation. The Government has not been committed to sustainable management of natural resources and …
Champion Of Anzac: General Sir Brudenell White, The First Australian Imperial Force And The Emergence Of The Australian Military Culture 1914-18, John Bentley
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
It is a curious fact that Brudenell White remains one of the least known and least analysed of Australia's military commanders. It is curious because White had a profound influence not only on the organisational culture of the First AIF but on the organisational history of the Australian military. This thesis examines White's influence from the perspective of organisational culture theory.
According to Peters and Waterman founders create both the tangible aspects of an organisation, such as structure and technology, as well as the symbols, deologies, language, and beliefs that embody the organisation's culture. The founder provides the momentum that …
