The Significance Of Materials In Modern Painting, Barry Gazzard Jan 1999

The Significance Of Materials In Modern Painting, Barry Gazzard

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis looks at the changes in attitude towards the oil painting surface during the course of Modernism. The analysis focuses on the brushstroke, surface and the incorporation of materials into traditional oil painting techniques which culminated in the use of natural materials (pollen, beeswax) simply presented seemingly without artifice. Developments related to the use of materials brought about fundamental changes to the practice and perception of painting. Materials and their use have been used as a signifier for various perceived deficiencies of contemporary society, and particularly the surface, is seen as a signifier of nature. The motif of the …

The Interaction Of Plasminogen With The Cell Surface: Involvement Of Plasminogen Binding And Activation During Cell Death, Matthew J. O'Mullane Jan 1999

The Interaction Of Plasminogen With The Cell Surface: Involvement Of Plasminogen Binding And Activation During Cell Death, Matthew J. O'Mullane

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Cell-surface plasminogen activation (PA) occurs by virtue of the presence of specific receptors for plasminogen (pig) and urokinase or tissue plasminogen activator (uPA and tPA respectively). Receptor binding of pig induces a conformational change in the molecule, which makes it more susceptible to activation by uPA/tPA. Plasmin (plm) generated on the cell-surface in this manner is protected from fast acting inhibitors and can subsequently participate in various extracellular proteolytic events such as cell migration (e.g angiogenesis, tumour cell invasion, inflammation, wound healing, bacterial invasion), ovulation, tissue remodelling and the activation of other protease classes and growth factors. Evidence is also …

The Effect Of Heat Acclimation On Body-Fluid Regulation, Mark J. Patterson Jan 1999

The Effect Of Heat Acclimation On Body-Fluid Regulation, Mark J. Patterson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Following heat acclimation, a greater cardiac and thermal stability are reported regularly, during exercise in the heat. However, the mechanisms responsible for this greater stability are not completely understood. While a greater cardiac stability may result from an expanded resting plasma volume (PV), the mechanisms responsible for this expansion are contentious. Furthermore, an attenuated plasma loss during exercise in the heat may also improve cardiac stability, yet no investigation has adequately addressed this issue. Reductions in oesophageal temperature (Tes) during exercise in humid heat imply a greater thermal stability, which is possibly attributed to a greater evaporative heat …

The Synthesis And Characterisation Of Hydrogel And Polypyrrole Blends, B C. Kim Jan 1999

The Synthesis And Characterisation Of Hydrogel And Polypyrrole Blends, B C. Kim

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels were synthesised chemically prior to the preparation of hydrogel and PPy blends. PAAm hydrogel was used as a matrix to grow polypyrrole electrochemically in the three dimensional structure. The redox nature of the blends was studied using electrochemical (EC) methods such as cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry. The effect of electropolymerisation time, monomer concentration and dopant size on the preparation of the hydrogel and PPy blend has been investigated. It was found that electropolymerisation time and monomer concentration affected the growth of polypyrrole in the hydrogel network. It was also observed that smaller dopants (N03-) …

Academic Industrial Relations In Australia: An Historial Overview, Diana J. Kelly Jan 1999

Academic Industrial Relations In Australia: An Historial Overview, Diana J. Kelly

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This history of academic industrial relations in Austraha from the 1950s to the 1990s examines the ways in which assumptions, methods, and objects of analysis have been shaped by ideas and events external to the field of study. As an uncertain interdiscipUnary field, Australian academic industrial relations was as open to influences from changes in social and pohtical norms, pubhc policy and the changing imperatives of higher education, as it was to the ideas of scholars in the USA and UK, and those from nearby older disciplines. Within academic industrial relations, the tensions arising from dealing with these often competing …

The Effect Of Residual Stress And Crack Closure On Fatigue Crack Growth, Jonathan Richard Thomas Lloyd Jan 1999

The Effect Of Residual Stress And Crack Closure On Fatigue Crack Growth, Jonathan Richard Thomas Lloyd

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The effects of residual stress and fatigue crack closure have been investigated in an offshore application structural steel. Residual stresses were generated by deliberate overloading to generate localised plastic deformation and by welding.

The residual stresses in the specimens were measured by a variety of techniques, and fatigue cracks grown under controlled tensile load cycles. During the crack growth experiments, the fatigue loading was interrupted to perform fatigue crack closure measurements. The overall concepts, and experimental techniques, used were well established. However, the work represents a holistic and unique approach to correlate the combined effect of residual stresses and crack …

Business Success And Abef Evaluation Results: On The Nexus Between Manufacturing Results And Frameworks For Business Excellence, Alexander Hausner Jan 1999

Business Success And Abef Evaluation Results: On The Nexus Between Manufacturing Results And Frameworks For Business Excellence, Alexander Hausner

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The aim of the study was to find whether quantitative evidence exists to link the Australian Business Excellence Framework (ABEF) with business outcomes. Improvements in the top key performance indicators (KPIs) of 22 manufacturers are considered against their A B E F evaluation scores.

The Results

1.The findings show a direct link between performance in the Awards and annual improvements in bottom line results. Organisations achieving high A B E F scores were found to belong to that group of firms with the highest performance across a wide range of indicators, including financial results and productivity. This also manifests itself …

Auditory Event-Related Potentials In Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Developmental And Clinical Aspects, Stuart J. Johnstone Jan 1999

Auditory Event-Related Potentials In Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Developmental And Clinical Aspects, Stuart J. Johnstone

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examined the developmental aspects of auditory stimulus processing in children and adolescents with Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) and age-matched control children via event-related potentials (ERPS). A simple auditory oddball task was used for each study. In addition to four studies addressing ERP data in the time-domain, which extended previous research via consideration of (i) topographic analyses, (ii) components to standard stimuli, and (iii) two subtypes of AD/HD as defined by DSM-1Y, an additional two studies examined similar considerations in the time-frequency domain. Main results indicated that (a) in healthy children and adolescents the activation and timing of some cognitive …

Behaviour Of Variable Speed Drives Under The Influence Of Voltage Sags, Rajagopalan Lakshmi Narayanan Jan 1999

Behaviour Of Variable Speed Drives Under The Influence Of Voltage Sags, Rajagopalan Lakshmi Narayanan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In ac variable speed drives (VSDs) having an uncontrolled rectifier front-end, the effect of voltage sags are mainly observed in the dc bus characteristics. These VSDs are susceptible to nuisance tripping due to dc under-voltage or ac over-current faults which result in production loss, material wastage and require manual interventions in industrial processes. This thesis is aimed at improving the voltage sag ride-through performance of ac VSDs by improving the control algorithm. The proposed strategy recommends maintaining the dc link voltage constant at the nominal value utilising two control modes (a) by recovering the kinetic energy available in the rotating …

Secure Arithmetic Coding Encryption Schemes, T. Uehara Jan 1999

Secure Arithmetic Coding Encryption Schemes, T. Uehara

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Image processing is of growing interest in computer applications. Since the size of image files are generally large and image data is usually highly redundant, using compression algorithms provide effective way of increasing communication and storages efficiency. JPEG, which is one of the most widely used image compression standards, uses Huffman or arithmetic coding for its lossless compression part. With rapid growth of the Internet, controlling access to data is of increasing importance and hence encryption is of much wider use. Adding security to the algorithm is an attractive proposal as it could reduce the overall processing cost of providing …

The Relationship Of Participation In Organised Sports And Games, Participation In Nonorganised Physical Activity, And Cardiorespiratory Endurance To Fundamental Motor Skill Ability Among Adolescents, Anthony D. Okely Jan 1999

The Relationship Of Participation In Organised Sports And Games, Participation In Nonorganised Physical Activity, And Cardiorespiratory Endurance To Fundamental Motor Skill Ability Among Adolescents, Anthony D. Okely

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Physical inactivity has been considered a major public health issue among adolescents because of its high prevalence and its association with numerous adverse health outcomes during adolescence which may carry over to adulthood. A key to addressing this issue has been to identify the determinants that may influence an adolescent's decision to be physically active. A determinant that has been hypothesised is the level of proficiency of the motor skills used to participate in physical activity; however, this relationship has been virtually unexplored. This study investigated how organised sports and games, nonorganised physical activity, and cardiorespiratory endurance were each related …

Taking A Transactional View Of Occupational Stress Into Self-Report Management, Harlan Thomas Abson Jan 1999

Taking A Transactional View Of Occupational Stress Into Self-Report Management, Harlan Thomas Abson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The more traditional descriptive methodologies used in stress research invariably disregard or discount the importance of the personal meaning assigned to sources of intrinsic and extrinsic stress in the stressor to strain process (Payne, Jabri & Pearson, 1988). This practice, therefore, may account for the consistent inability of descriptive stress inventories to explain more than a moderate percentage of the variance in strain. This empirical thesis, therefore, has sought to explore the hypothesis that the nature of the personal meaning assigned to sources of occupational stress explains variance in strain beyond that explained by the person's description (i.e., recognition) of …

A Study Of Kufic Script In Islamic Calligraphy And Its Relevance To Turkish Graphic Art Using Latin Fonts In The Late Twentieth Century, Enis Timuçin Tan Jan 1999

A Study Of Kufic Script In Islamic Calligraphy And Its Relevance To Turkish Graphic Art Using Latin Fonts In The Late Twentieth Century, Enis Timuçin Tan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The subject of this thesis is the Kufic script, the oldest Arabic writing from that emerged in the seventh century with the flourishing of Islamic religion. Given the difference between writing and drawing, the Kufic style should be considered as the most akin to drawing among all Arabic writing styles. The thesis argues that compositions created in Kufic script may inspire contemporary graphic artworks produced through Roman alphabet forms. A central part of the research involves situating calligraphy within the broad framework of the Islamic religious philosophy, the evolution of graphic notions, the protestant art trends related to graphic arts …

The Dancing Shadows: Shifting Perspectives And The Body, Dong Wang Fan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Shifting perspectives in visual art from a method point of view are the systems of space rendering, which differ considerably in many cultures and traditions. Shifting perspectives from a metaphor viewpoint have philosophical, technological, social, sexual, and emotional significance. Such perspectives broaden our perception of bodies in space. This study has developed from the examination of diverse shifting perspectives employed in historical and contemporary Western and Chinese art. Through detailed analysis of various art practices dealing with the representation of human identities in relation to changing social and technological environment, the focus of this study is on a new way …

Towards A More Authentic School Science: Grounding School Science In The Metascientific Literature, Gordon L. Brown Jan 1999

Towards A More Authentic School Science: Grounding School Science In The Metascientific Literature, Gordon L. Brown

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study arose from the intersection of a number of concerns, chiefly: the need for informed decision making by the public, including scientists, in issues involving science and technology; the inadequacy of school science in preparing students for this task; the inadequacy of curriculum development processes in effectively using the combined expertise of curriculum stakeholders; and the strong interest of curriculum stakeholders in just what school science should be. Accordingly, the study set out to inform debates about each of these issues by addressing underlying causes. The particular underlying cause studied was the nature of school Science and how it …

Developmental Discourses In School Physical Education, Lisette Burrows Jan 1999

Developmental Discourses In School Physical Education, Lisette Burrows

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This poststructuralist study critically examines the nature and function of developmental discourses in N e w Zealand school physical education. Since the inception of formal schooling in N e w Zealand, physical educators have insisted that physical education can and does assist children to develop their physical, cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual selves. These disciplinary claims provide the conceptual foundation upon which the profession rests. They legitimate particular professional and research practices, dispositions toward children and relationships between students and teachers. This thesis explores the historical and contemporary discourses about child development that physical education theorists and practitioners have drawn …

Quaternary Stratisgraphy And Evolution Of Aeolianite On Lord Howe Island, Brendan Brooke Jan 1999

Quaternary Stratisgraphy And Evolution Of Aeolianite On Lord Howe Island, Brendan Brooke

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Lord Howe Island is a remote subtropical island in the Tasman Sea, situated 700 k m eastnortheast of Sydney. It is composed of Miocene basalt and outcrops of aeolianite, a bioclastic limestone deposited as dune units with subordinate beach, palaeosols and reefal units. This thesis investigates the chronostratigraphy of the aeolianite, identifying a far longer Quaternary record of dune emplacement on the island than has been reported in previous studies. This study also reveals that the major periods of dune emplacement on the island are linked to glacio-eustatically controlled sea-level highstands. Past studies of the island have concluded that the …

This thesis is the necessary pre-work for the implementation of a new machine perception system with potential application in mobile robotics.

A Tale Of Three Varieties, Carolyn E. Mcphail Jan 1999

A Tale Of Three Varieties, Carolyn E. Mcphail

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there were three distinguished and well-studied classes of topological groups. However, little was known about the three varieties of topological groups they generate. This thesis tells the tale of these varieties. It becomes apparent that the three varieties are all distinct and that one is in fact the variety of abelian topological groups, that is, their entire universe. The other two are comparatively small, however, no less important and interesting. A framework is established within which the three varieties are compared with each other and also come up against the …

The View From Within: Correlations Between My Composition And Improvisation, Roger Frampton Jan 1999

The View From Within: Correlations Between My Composition And Improvisation, Roger Frampton

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this thesis I have used my own compositions and transcriptions of my improvisations as artistic/conceptual mirrors to reflect my musical psyche. I have tried to observe these reflections objectively with no real desire to change my approach in the future. During the course of selection, transcription and subsequent analyses I was often faced with tasks which required a mindset that was antithetic to what I consider to be my main musical preoccupations.

Originally, the main concern of this thesis began with a simple question I have often been asked by people from all walks of life, “How do you …

Autobiographic Self-Construction In The Letters Of Emily Dickinson, Lori Karen Lebow Jan 1999

Autobiographic Self-Construction In The Letters Of Emily Dickinson, Lori Karen Lebow

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Emily Dickinson's collected correspondence creates an autobiographical record of her textual self-construction. Despite her reclusive lifestyle, correspondence permitted communication with a dispersed and select readership. Her epistolary personae construct this accessible presence despite her physical withdrawal. This dissertation explores how her interpersonal textual strategies closely follow the kinds of interactions sought in face-to-face encounters to form intimate, lasting friendships. The complex philosophical issues associated with self-consciousness and identity are enacted and discussed in Dickinson's letters because her textual self-construction became a significant relational activity. Identity construction and role-play allowed her to speak in a society that pressured women to remain …

Three Bangladeshi Plays Considered In Postcolonial Context, Khairul Haque Chowdhury Jan 1999

Three Bangladeshi Plays Considered In Postcolonial Context, Khairul Haque Chowdhury

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

There is no full-length investigation of postcoloniality in Bangladeshi Bengali literature. This is partly because Bangladesh had no separate identity under colonial rule, being just another part of greater India. Then, at partition, it became one section of the unnatural union that was Pakistan. These two identities have kept Bangladesh as a relatively unknown domain, at least to the Western academy. The other reason in the context of literary postcolonial studies is that these have concentrated on writing in English, whereas Bangladeshi literature is almost completely in the national language. This study offers a discussion of the postcoloniality of contemporary …

An Improved Binary Feedback Flow Control Scheme For Atm Networks, Li Xue Jan 1999

An Improved Binary Feedback Flow Control Scheme For Atm Networks, Li Xue

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is concerned with the design and analysis of a high performance binary feedback flow control scheme primarily targeted at Available Bit Rate (ABR) services in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. Eventhough the focus is on ATM based ABR services the proposed binary feedback scheme and analytical approach is generic in nature and can be applied to other networks. A simple network model is considered where a conmion bottleneck distant queue is shared by a number of different round-trip delay source-destination pairs. The Mitra- Seery (MS) algorithm (Bonomi, Mitra and Seery, 1995) is used as a basis for adapting …

Tractable Forms Of The Bond Pricing Equation, Gaurav Raina Jan 1999

Tractable Forms Of The Bond Pricing Equation, Gaurav Raina

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A key area of study in the world of financial derivatives is the modelling of the short-term interest rate with a view to finding theoretically fair prices for financial instruments. We consider a second order linear partial differential equation of parabolic type which has the spot-rate (otherwise known as the short-term interest rate) and time as independent variables, and which can be used to model various financial instruments such as fixed-income products. In this thesis we have concentrated on finding analytic solutions to this equation for pricing simple bonds and hence refer to this equation as the Bond Pricing Equation …

Processing And Characterisation Of Bi-2223/Ag Superconducting Tapes, Rong Zeng Jan 1999

Processing And Characterisation Of Bi-2223/Ag Superconducting Tapes, Rong Zeng

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The work in this thesis concentrated on the processing of high temperature superconducting Bi-2223/Ag (Ag-alloy) tapes. A number of critical issues have been investigated. These include Bi-2223 phase formation kinetics and thermodynamics, microstructure, electromagnetic properties and current limiting mechanism.

An investigation into the effect of the phase composition of the precursor powder on the Bi-2223 phase formation showed that tapes made from a precursor powder containing 72.5% Pb in Bi-2212 phase have the highest Jc and the shortest sintering time.

A study of the relationship between filamentary homogeneity and observed current distribution in multifilamentary tapes was carried out using magneto-optical …

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The Italian community in Australia is very numerous and is one of the largest ethnic groups in the Illawarra region. The Italian language is widely spoken by the migrants (the first generation), and to a lesser extent by their children (the second generation). This study, utilising a sociolinguistic approach, proposes to determine to what extent the Italian language is being used by the second generation. These results are obtained using a survey involving a questionnaire in English and language assessments in which word knowledge, sentence construction and fluency in Italian are tested. The outcome of the study can also determine …

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Composers of Australian operas, in the decade from 1988 to 1998, have responded to social and political events through the medium of central characters. In each of the seven operas in the study, a character becomes the signifier of reflections on events and conditions that affect Australian society. The works selected are Andrew Schultz's Black River, Gillian Whitehead's The Bride of Fortune, Moya Henderson's Lindy - The Trial Scene, Richard Mills' Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, Alan John's The Eighth Wonder, Martin Wesley-Smith's Quito and Colin Bright's The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior. These operas are studied in …

A Holocene Vegetation History Of The Flinders Ranges South Australia: Evidence From Leporillus Spp. (Stick-Nest Rat) Middens, Lynne Mccarthy Jan 1999

A Holocene Vegetation History Of The Flinders Ranges South Australia: Evidence From Leporillus Spp. (Stick-Nest Rat) Middens, Lynne Mccarthy

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Palaeoecological records for semi-arid and arid environments of Australia are limited to poor preservation of material in this environmental setting. A s a consequence, a Holocene vegetation and climatic record for a large part of the continent is incomplete. Leporillus spp. (stick-nest rat) middens provide a wealth of palaeoecological information for Holocene environments in areas where such records are rare. Eighteen middens from three key sites in the Flinders Ranges (Arkaroola-Mount Painter Sanctuary, Mount Chambers Gorge and Brachina Gorge), were investigated in this project to provide a thorough spatial and temporal coverage of palaeoecological sites. Issues of midden taphonomy, temporal …
