The Packing Of Solid Particles, Ai Bing Yu Jan 1989

The Packing Of Solid Particles, Ai Bing Yu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Porosity is one of the most important properties of particulate materials, and it has been well known that there is a strong dependence of porosity on particle size distribution. This thesis will present a study of the packing of particles with special reference to the porosity and its estimation of particulate mixtures.

An attempt has been made to establish a general theory of the random packing of particles. The existence of two packing mechanisms, viz. the filling mechanism and the occupation mechanism, is demonstrated and the result is used to explain the limitations of the existing mathematical models. The porosity …

An Evangelical School In An Evangelical Diocese: An Examination Of Trinity Grammar School, Sydney, 1913 To 1976, Phillip J. Heath

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The following thesis attempts to describe the history of Trinity Grammar School, Sydney, Australia, from 1913 to 1976. It examines the foundation of the school, its demographic setting, and its continuity of religious expression from its establishment by the Rev. G.A. Chambers in 1913 to the appointment of its most recent headmaster, Roderick I. West, in 1975/76. In examining the history of Trinity Grammar School, this thesis postulates three themes which are consistent features of its narrative. First, Trinity was founded and sustained as an attempt to establish an evangelical school in an evangelical diocese, one in which the religious …

The Impact Of Teacher Theoretical Orientation On Literacy Programs : [An Investigation Into The Impact Of Teacher's Beliefs On Literacy Programs], Kerry Sweeney

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This project set out to study the influence of teacher beliefs and assumptions on Literacy Programs. Two teachers were selected for a naturalistic study which focused on the influence of each teachers theoretical orientation on : the goals set for the classroom literacy program, the behaviours teachers perceive as reflecting "good" writing, the procedures, materials and information teachers use for evaluation, the materials and resources teachers select for use in the instructional program, the conditions for learning established in the classroom. This project involved both teachers and three students from their classes over a twelve week period.

An Investigation Of Children's Non-Narrative Writing In A Year 6/7 Classroom, Helen Charlotte Wildash-Campagna

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Nature and purpose of the study This study investigated the broad question, "What affects children's nonnarrative writing in the classroom?" The research perspective and design employed was naturalistic and participatory. It sought an integrated view of children's non-narrative writing performance by examining the following questions, in a natural classroom setting. 1. How, if at all, do students distinguish between different types of writing? By what criteria do they make their distinctions and why? 2. What preferences, if any, do students have for particular types of writing? Why do they have such preferences? 3. What do students believe affects their production …

Practical Applications Of Three-Dimensional Stress Change Measurements And Displacements In Underground Coal Mines, Jan Anton Nemcik Jan 1989

Practical Applications Of Three-Dimensional Stress Change Measurements And Displacements In Underground Coal Mines, Jan Anton Nemcik

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Theoretical advances in mathematical analyses, numerical modelling and computer technology has significantly increased the knowledge of stress distribution around underground excavations. The complexity of rock behaviour, especially of the sedimentary soft rock type has made exact mathematical predictions very difficult. The need for alternative methods was clearly defined.

In the past various methods to measure in situ stresses were developed. Early measurements were in most cases limited to one dimension and were often used to measure the magnitude of vertical stress concentrations around the mine openings.

No detailed discussions on the historical stress measurement development is attempted here since many …

Sedimentation In Lake Albert, Wagga Wagga, Nsw, Gary Gordon Caitcheon Jan 1989

Sedimentation In Lake Albert, Wagga Wagga, Nsw, Gary Gordon Caitcheon

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A sedimentation study of Lake Albert, a small lake artificially created at the turn of the cenmry, was conducted to determine the amount, rates of accumulation and sources of sediment in the lake. A series of diversions of near by creeks has resulted in the accumulation of relatively complex deltaic sequences adjacent to the diversion outfalls. Sediment now fills approximately 9% of the original volume of the lake basin. At the present rate of sediment accumulation the lake may be significantly filled in about 600 years, although this projection will be modified by climatic and catchment related factors during that …

The State, Youth And Schooling: The Social Construction Of Studenthood In New South Wales 1788-1948, Dianne S. Snow Jan 1989

The State, Youth And Schooling: The Social Construction Of Studenthood In New South Wales 1788-1948, Dianne S. Snow

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the social construction of studenthood in New South Wales between 1788 and 1948. It focuses on the role of the state in this process while recognising that it was not the only agent involved. More specifically the thesis analyses the role of the state in defining studenthood and how this changed the relationship of youth to the state. Informed by Foucauldian theory and critical theory on the state, it seeks to render both 'the state' and 'the student' problematics in the history of education.

The thesis argues that as studenthood is an institutionalised concept it has been …

Maintaining Control: A History Of Unionism Among Employees Of The Sydney Water Board, Peter Michael Sheldon Jan 1989

Maintaining Control: A History Of Unionism Among Employees Of The Sydney Water Board, Peter Michael Sheldon

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis analyses the history of the Metropolitan Board of Water Supply and Sewerage Employees' Union (Wages Division) between its birth in 1909 and 1970. The context is the particular development of a water supply and sewerage industry for Sydney and the patterns of unionisation of construction labourers. Until 1928, the Public Worics Dqiartment had responsibility for the major construction works, the Water Board for maintenance. This thesis argues that the nature of the industry's financing and technical operation encouraged the development of a dual labour force and dual union culture. Construction labourers were casuals while those doing the Board's …

Technology And The Australian State: The Changing Political Discourse On Technology In Australia 1975-1985, Paul K. Couchman Jan 1989

Technology And The Australian State: The Changing Political Discourse On Technology In Australia 1975-1985, Paul K. Couchman

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The thesis brings contemporary social theory into the analysis of science and technology policy. In doing so it draws on two broad areas of theory, on the social nature of technology and on the state as an institution of political domination. Technology is important to the state for it provides new means for state actors to achieve desired ends (state actors thus have an instrumental interest in technology), and it sets an agenda of policy problems for the state to deal with. Conversely, the state is important to technology for it is a major orienting agent and an organisational locus …

The optical disk is a newly developed secondary data storage medium which is based on laser technology. Optical disk technology has achieved higher densities, larger capacities and longer archival life than magnetic disk technology. To balance this, access times are slower and the write once nature of some optical systems makes them unsuitable for some applications.

A Study Of Keyboard Dynamics, Sumalee Pisitkasem Jan 1989

A Study Of Keyboard Dynamics, Sumalee Pisitkasem

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Keyboard dynamics is concerned with the way in which people type and with the possible uses of this infornnation to recognize computer users. The distributions of interkey times for each pair of characters typed by different subjects on a given keyboard are analysed and some pairs or combinations of pairs that have the power of discriminating between users' typing are chosen. A reference profile, which consists of some statistics that uniquely identify the user, is built as a basis for verifying a sample of future typing. The smallest sample size of interkey times for which reasonably reliable discrimination is possible …

An Evaluation Of The Oil And Gas Potential Of The Murray Basin, Alan Watchman Jan 1989

An Evaluation Of The Oil And Gas Potential Of The Murray Basin, Alan Watchman

The yellow-bellied glider (Petaurus australis) is one of only a few mammal species which feed on plant and insect exudates. The studies described in this thesis were aimed at assessing the importance of the diet on the behavioural ecology of the yellow-bellied glider. Gliders were studied in detail at two sites in New South Wales in quite different forest habitats. One site was near Bombala on the southeast tablelands and the other was near Kioloa on the south coast. The following features of the behavioural ecology of the yellow-bellied glider are presented in this thesis: (i) the diet and foraging …

The Shifting Weather: Affinity, Diversity, And The Place Of The Author In Six Novels Of The Depression Era, Audrey May Heycox Jan 1989

The Shifting Weather: Affinity, Diversity, And The Place Of The Author In Six Novels Of The Depression Era, Audrey May Heycox

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Tn an analysis of six novels this dissertation looks at the way four authors reacted creatively to the challenge presented by the Great Depression and World War II. The features that these works have in common are numerous and significant from a literary viewpoint, and reflect their common genesis. Regardless of their affinities, however, we can appreciate that diversity of style and presentation which is to be expected from individual authors as a result of their personal and unique points of view. Furthermore, when we penetrate their surface preoccupation with social matters, and when we read these works from a …

The aim of this study is to illuminate the development of early literacy learners within one multi-age, 'whole' language classroom, and to correlate the social interactions reflected in this context to learners's literacy cognition, attitudes and affective development for literacy. This study has drawn upon a number of resources, using naturalistic illumination procedures to delineate as effectively as possible, the links between teacher beliefs and practices to the social interactions that contribute to the literacy development of early literacy learners within one multi-age, 'whole' language context. Through this illumination, the importance of social interactions for supporting cognitive, attitudinal and affective …

An Examination Of The Correlation Between One School's Stated Policies In Literacy Teaching And Evaluation And The Teaching And Evaluation Practices In That School, Helen Lynette Woodward Jan 1989

An Examination Of The Correlation Between One School's Stated Policies In Literacy Teaching And Evaluation And The Teaching And Evaluation Practices In That School, Helen Lynette Woodward

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study examines the correlation between the values reflected in the principles contained in the school literacy policy and those reflected in teachers' beliefs and practices in the classroom. Evaluation practices, by their very nature, are determined by the values established and acted upon in a given context. Therefore there ought to be correlation between stated policy principles and teachers' evaluation practices. Principles were extracted from the school's stated policies in literacy teaching and evaluation. The teachers were interviewed and observations were made of classroom practices and procedures. Descriptive and inferential reports were written and the categories of beliefs, practices …

Theory And Application Of (Iir) Adaptive Notch Filtering, Jose Fernando Chicharo Jan 1989

Theory And Application Of (Iir) Adaptive Notch Filtering, Jose Fernando Chicharo

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis deals with infinite impulse response adaptive notch filtering and its application to the industrial problem of roll eccentricity signal estimation and retrieval.

A minimal notch filter parametization is examined and a number of modifications are proposed which serve to enhance the notch filter characteristics and hence its usefulness. Firstly, a special constraint is introduced which allows the notch filter to be converted into a line enhancer without requiring structural changes. A further advantage associated with this modification is that the notch filter becomes a minimum phase filter. Secondly, a normalizing gain factor is introduced which ensures unity gain …

Petrological And Maturation Characteristics Of Organic Matter From The Middle Proterozoic Mcarthur Basin, Australia, Ian H. Crick Jan 1989

Petrological And Maturation Characteristics Of Organic Matter From The Middle Proterozoic Mcarthur Basin, Australia, Ian H. Crick

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Organic matter in middle Proterozoic sedimentary rocks of the McArthur Basin occurs predominately within fine-grained clastic sediments and is made up of the petrographically discernable entities, lamalginite, bitumen, thucholite and oncalginite. With increasing maturation, fluorescence in lamalginite diminishes from bright yellow to dull brownish-orange and eventually ceases. Disaggregation of nonfluorescent lamalginite may have led to the formation of some types of bitumen. The lamalginite probably formed from a variety of micro-organisms but few are preserved in the lamalginite.

Reflectances of discrete maceral types generally show systematic increases with increasing depth, but discontinuities occur where fluorescent lamalginite gives way to nonfluorescent …
