Labour And Politics In New South Wales, 1880-1900, Raymond A. Markey Jan 1983

Labour And Politics In New South Wales, 1880-1900, Raymond A. Markey

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis studies the motivation and nature of working class mobilization from which the New South Wales Labor Party emerged in the 1890s, and the nature of that Party. It concentrates, in particular, upon the relationship between trade unions and the Labor Party, and the relationship between the Party leadership and its rank and file. The thesis is divided into three parts.

Part I ' Social and Industrial Structure' considers the material basis of working class mobilization. It examines the working and living conditions of the basic groups within the working class: urban workers, rural workers, coal and metal miners, …

Inter-Relationships Between Environmental Factors, Personal Experiences And Behaviour Following Childbirth: A Longitudinal Study, Jan Westerink Jan 1983

Inter-Relationships Between Environmental Factors, Personal Experiences And Behaviour Following Childbirth: A Longitudinal Study, Jan Westerink

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Using reciprocal determinism as a model an examination of the inter-relationships between environmental factors, personal experiences and behaviour following childbirth was undertaken. Three different samples of women were studied. Each group had given birth under different environmental conditions. The first sample gave birth in a hospital which practiced routines that led to separation of the mother and child; the second comprised women who gave birth to a premature infant; and the third was of young low socio-economic status mothers. The women were interviewed while still in the hospital, in the home when the children were three months old, and again …

Earthquake Energy Absorbers, Man Tung Lie Jan 1983

Earthquake Energy Absorbers, Man Tung Lie

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The behaviour of translational friction-type earthquake energy absorber, lined with different types of corrmercially available friction materials, is investigated experimentally. Since the temperature at the bridge site can often be at sub-zero or sub-freezing levels, it may be necessary to study the behaviour of the earthquake energy absorber under such severe weather conditions. In addition to under nonnal room temperature, tests of the earthquake energy absorber have been carried out at 0°c, -10°c, -15°c and -20°c.

The other friction-type earthquake energy absorber is also investigated. This friction-type unit, which absorbed earthquake energy by means of rotational clutch mechanism, is tested …

An Encoder System For The 18-Inch Telescope And Uvbyhb Photometry Of Bright Uv Stars, Brian R. Wade Jan 1983

An Encoder System For The 18-Inch Telescope And Uvbyhb Photometry Of Bright Uv Stars, Brian R. Wade

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

An observation program of uvbyHB photometry was performed on 90 stars taken from Garnochan and Wilson»s (1976) catalogue of objects that appear to be very ultraviolet as detected by the S2/68 experiment in the ESRO TD-1A satellite. The classification of most of the stars by visible photometry, published spectrographic class, and ultraviolet photometry from the TD-1A data is consistent to within two subclasses. The initial appearance of excessive UV for these objects would appear to be due to incorrect HD classification. Two objects (HD36629 and HD81307) appear to have genuinely excessive ultraviolet flux, and it is suggested that this could …

Redundant Women' In The Promised Land: English Middle Class Women's Migration To Australia 1861-1881, Margaret Sales Jan 1983

Redundant Women' In The Promised Land: English Middle Class Women's Migration To Australia 1861-1881, Margaret Sales

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

For most middle class women who migrated, Australia was a 'promised land' as far as employment prospects were concerned. The colonies offered an opportunity for well-paid employment, better prospects for finding a job, and the chance to live an independent and satisfying life in a society where women were in the minority, cind generally treated well as a result. Some immigrants married, but not enough to declare the colonies a 'promised land' in terms of marriage prospects. No women admitted to migrating in search of a husband, but a number of English writers extolled the marital opportunities which the colonies …

Technology, Education, And Social Change: A Programme For Survival, N. C. Mitchell Jan 1983

Technology, Education, And Social Change: A Programme For Survival, N. C. Mitchell

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The thesis sets out to recommend a curriculum and a method of school organisation which would be relevant to the requirements of the school pupils of today and the near future. The suggested curriculum is to involve the integration of environmental studies with each of the subject areas studied at school. The graduated development of democratic procedures is recommended for application in schools in order to develop abilities in, and habits of responsible decision-making in the maturing young. It is maintained that the adoption of these measures would be likely to produce citizens who would not only understand the urgent …

Gas Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric Studies Of Shale Oil And Oil Shale From The Rundle Deposit, Queensland, Robert Anthony Regtop Jan 1983

Gas Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric Studies Of Shale Oil And Oil Shale From The Rundle Deposit, Queensland, Robert Anthony Regtop

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Oil shale samples, from different stratigraphie levels in the oil shale deposit at Rundle, Queensland, were retorted by the Fischer Assay method (standard laboratory retort). The shale oils were chemically separated into 13 fractions and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Over 600 compounds were identified, including homologous series of linear alkanes, 2- and 3-methylalkanes, alkylcyclopentanes , al kylcyclohexanes , 1-, 2-, and 3-alkenes, alkylcyclohexenes, alkylcyclopentenes , 2-methy1-3-alkenes, alkylbenzenes, alkylnaphthalenes , 1-phenyl-4-alkenes, nitriles, methyl ketones, amides and carboxylic acids. Substituted benzenes, naphthalenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, isoprenoid alkanes/alkenes, phenols, pyridines, quinolines and acridines were also identified. The oils are highly aliphatic in …

The Prediction Of Bin Wall Loads, D. J. Martin Jan 1983

The Prediction Of Bin Wall Loads, D. J. Martin

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A computer program for the prediction of normal wall pressures and wall forces in mass flow bins, based on the Jenike method, has been developed. It operates in an interactive mode and produces both graphical and tabulated output. In the development of a simplified design method peak strain energy wall pressures were expressed as multiples of the corresponding Janssen pressures. Design charts were produced by applying a smoothing technique to reduce the magnitude of a discontinuity which is inherent in the Jenike method. The multiple of initial loads design approach has been extended to the cylinder in plane wail force, …

Investigation Of The Cyclization Of Dihydroisotryptamine, Chang Su Tsong Jan 1983

Investigation Of The Cyclization Of Dihydroisotryptamine, Chang Su Tsong

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Dihydroisotryptamine was prepared, as its crystalline hydrochloride, in sufficient quantities to enable investigation of its general properties and the possibilities of its successful cyclization to tricyclic structures which are isomeric with corresponding tryptamine derivatives present e.g. among harmala alkaloids.

A Finite Element Approach To Molecular Vibration, Margaret Joan Hamilton Jan 1983

A Finite Element Approach To Molecular Vibration, Margaret Joan Hamilton

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this thesis, piecewise continuous Hermite cubic polynomials are proposed as basis functions for the solution of one-dimensional, molecular vibrational problems. The technique, referred to as the finite element method as discussed by Strang and Fix (1973), introduces greater flexibility into the form of the wavefunction solution than is allowed by global basis functions, and enables a clear demonstration of convergence. The general theory of molecular vibrations is outlined in Chapter Two of this thesis while the finite element method and its application to one-dimensional problems is discussed in Chapter Three.

The one-dimensional wavefunction solutions form a basis for multidimensional …

Mathematical Modelling Of Rate-Limiting Mechanisms Of Pyritic Oxidation In Overburden Dumps, Gregory Bruce Davis Jan 1983

Mathematical Modelling Of Rate-Limiting Mechanisms Of Pyritic Oxidation In Overburden Dumps, Gregory Bruce Davis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The mining of valuable minerals often leads to major environmental pollution problems especially when pyritic material is associated with the orebody being mined. In this thesis mathematical equations are formulated which describe a "dual region" model of pyritic oxidation within a waste rock dump, where it is assumed that oxygen transport is the rate-limiting step in the oxidation process, and that oxygen transport to reaction sites occurs in two stages; bulk diffusion of oxygen from the atmosphere, at the top surface of the dump, through the pore space of the dump to particles within the dump, and then diffusional transport …

Random Walk Models Arising In Double Diffusion And Related Applications, Liwan H. Liyanage Jan 1983

Random Walk Models Arising In Double Diffusion And Related Applications, Liwan H. Liyanage

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is concerned with probabilistic models of double diffusion and related applications, which include a generalization of the gambler's ruin and a problem in queuing theory. Double diffusion theory is applicable to diffusion of ions in metals in the presence of high diffusivity paths. Previous authors have proposed a continuum model, a discrete random walk model and a Master equation model, modelling diffusion in an ideal media but with two families of diffusion paths. For the continuum model a number of mathematical results have been obtained, including solutions of the coupled system of linear parabolic partial differential equations.

Luigi Pirandello: Existentialist Avant La Lettre, Madeleine Strong Cincotta Jan 1983

Luigi Pirandello: Existentialist Avant La Lettre, Madeleine Strong Cincotta

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis argues that the Italian Nobel Prize winning author, Luigi Pirandello, far from being merely a rather cerebral writer with a philosophical bent, as he has been called by many of his critics, should in fact be recognised to occupy a place within what is often referred to as the field of Contemporary Continental Philosophy, as a "pre-existentialist" or an existentialist

avant la lettre.

The idea of so categorising him is not new, but no systematic examination of the entire corpus of his works has ever been attempted from a purely philosophical point of view in order to draw …

The Neutron Capture Mechanism In Some Closed Shell Nuclei, Farhang Zamani Company Jan 1983

The Neutron Capture Mechanism In Some Closed Shell Nuclei, Farhang Zamani Company

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

An investigation of the neutron capture mechanisms in magic nuclei (8 8Sr, 1 3 9La and 1 4 1Pr) and in 3 2 S is reported. Valence capture in 3 2S and 8 8Sr is expected to dominate the capture mechanism in some resonances and partial radiation width measurements are needed for a direct comparison with valence capture calculations. For 1 3 9La and 1 4 1Pr neither valence nor statistical mechanisms are applicable, and a 2p-lh mechanism has been proposed. It is decided to further investigate the capture mechanism in these …

The Derivation Of A Psychological Theory: Gestalt Therapy, Allen Richard Barlow Jan 1983

The Derivation Of A Psychological Theory: Gestalt Therapy, Allen Richard Barlow

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This dissertation examines the theoretical precursors of Gestalt therapy as proposed by F.S. (Fritz) Perls. Perls' complete published works were examined, and his acknowledgement of other theorists and philosophical/religious approaches noted. This examination yielded 27 individual theoreticians, plus Gestalt psychology, Zen Buddhism, Taoism and phenomenology as the major sources mentioned by Perls.

Wherever possible, the original works of these individuals were scrutinized to reveal the extent of their influence on Perls. Where works were originally published in languages other than English, English translations were used.

Comparison of the works of these theorists with those of Fritz Perls showed that all …

Stereospecific Synthesis Of Naphthoindolizidine And Tetrahydrobenzisoquinoline Derivatives, Naresh Kumar Jan 1983

Stereospecific Synthesis Of Naphthoindolizidine And Tetrahydrobenzisoquinoline Derivatives, Naresh Kumar

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A new method has been developed for the stereospecific synthesis of optically active naphthoindolizidine and tetrahydrobenzisoquinoline derivatives. The synthesis was achieved by mild intramolecular Friedel- Crafts' acylation of aralkyl derivatives of alanine, proline and a-amino-n-butyric acid. The compounds synthesized represent simple analogues of phenanthroindolizidine alkaloids (possessing physiological activity). The simplification of the structure lies (i) in the deletion of either the "top" or the "bottom" benzene ring, (ii) in the opening of the fifth (fused pyrrolidine) ring, and (iii) in the retention of asymmetric centres with modified substitution patterns.

The new synthetic route required the successful development of the following …

The Politics Of Technological Decision-Making: The Establishment Of Anahl, Pam Scott Jan 1983

The Politics Of Technological Decision-Making: The Establishment Of Anahl, Pam Scott

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Governments, although increasingly faced with decision-making on matters which involve a significant technical content, appear illequipped to cope with this and have come to rely on advice from experts. The establishment-fQjl the Australian National Animal Health Laboratory provides an example of technology decision-making by governments, using expert advisors. A number of investigations into ANAHL were carried out from 1964 and these led to a Parliamentary Public Works Committee Inquiry in 1974. The technical nature of the proposal allowed the decision making to be defined as scientific, however, it is argued that the institutions - committed to the establishment of ANAHL …

Dying In An Age Of Technology: An Evaluation Of Terminal Care Technology And Its Alternatives, Chloe Leigh Jan 1983

Dying In An Age Of Technology: An Evaluation Of Terminal Care Technology And Its Alternatives, Chloe Leigh

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis explores the influences, effects and results of improved life support technologies and of increased medical capabilities on terminal care and the care of the dying. It looks at the results of the application of these death-defying technologies and their effects on the definition of death, as well as the created need for new criteria for the determination of death when such technologies are used. Some legal, moral and ethical issues raised by these developments and their application, and the new medical problems and issues resulting from these 'medical successes' are also looked at.

The reasons behind the increasing …
