The thermodynamic functions ΔG°25 , ΔH° 25, and ΔS° 25 of proton Ionisation have been calculated using the Clarke and Glew procedure.
Flow Rate Of Simple Bulk Solids From Mass Flow Bins, Arnold G. Mclean
Flow Rate Of Simple Bulk Solids From Mass Flow Bins, Arnold G. Mclean
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
There is hardly an industry which does not employ gravity flow bins for the storage of bulk solids. Conseauently there has been considerable activity and research to provide the engineer with information that will enable him to design bulk solid storage facilities for unobstructed and predictable flow. There also has been an increasing tendency in industry to handle finer materials which has led to considerable difficulties especially in cases where the actual flow rate was considerably less than plant capacities.Such misfortunes have prompted a number of investigations in this field in an endeavour to understand the flow of fine materials …
The Analysis And Synthesis Of Bulk Loading Facilities With Reference To The Port Of Newcastle, Dinh-Nho Binh
The Analysis And Synthesis Of Bulk Loading Facilities With Reference To The Port Of Newcastle, Dinh-Nho Binh
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The main purpose of the thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the congestion process at some specialized berths which load coal as a bulk cargo. The problem of port congestion can be traced back to inadequate planning at some stage; however, the gradual rate of expansion at most ports has usually served to conceal the problem by allowing time for corrective action to be taken.
Australian Attitudes To The Traditional Cultural Sex Role Stereotypes, Robyn Rowland
Australian Attitudes To The Traditional Cultural Sex Role Stereotypes, Robyn Rowland
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The present study investigated Australian attitudes to traditional cultural sex roles. A pilot study was conducted from which a test battery was designed. This battery consisted of four scales: a Semantic Differential with five concepts {Typical Man J Typical }iornan^ Self, Ideal Man and Ideal Woman), an Adjective Value List (to assess the social desirability of stereotypic characteristics), the Bern Sex-Role Inventory, and an Attitude to Sex Roles Questionnaire. The battery was administered to a general population sample of 148 women and 154 men from Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, selected by a multi-stage sampling process. A set of five …
The Determination Of Steric Purity Of Amines And Amino Acids Gas Chromatography And Mass Spectrometry, C. Wiecek
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Amines and amino acids have been condensed with a mixture of N-TFA-R-prolyl chloride and N-TFA-S-(1-^H)-prolyl chloride and the resulting four diastereoisomers have been separated by Gas Chromatography into two peaks. The amount of each diastereoisomer formed was then determined by Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry. The steric purity of the enantiomeric mixtures was calcuated from these values and the calculated values were always found to be within 5% of the expected values.
The Analysis Of Free Fatty Acids In Biological Fluids Hplc, Michael Spence Keane
The Analysis Of Free Fatty Acids In Biological Fluids Hplc, Michael Spence Keane
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Techniques for derivatisation of fatty acids to form compounds suitable for detection by High Performance Liquid Chromatography using a 254 nm. ultraviolet detector have been developed. Benzylation of the fatty acids by a mild, thermal decomposition of the benzyldimethylanilinium salts of the fatty acids has been shown to proceed essentially to completion. Separation of the benzyl esters of the naturally occurring fatty acids in human physiological fluids was accomplished using a methanol/water elution from a reverse phase column. Quantitative formation of the 4-nitrobenzyl esters of the same acids, resulting in enhanced ultraviolet absorption with a concomittant increase in sensitivity in …
Osmoregulation In Xerotolerant And Not-Tolerant Yeasts, Margaret Ann Edgley
Osmoregulation In Xerotolerant And Not-Tolerant Yeasts, Margaret Ann Edgley
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Osmoregulation in both the xerotolerant yeast S. rouxii (strain YA) and the non-tolerant S. cerevisiae (strain Y41) involves the accumulation of the compatible solute glycerol. The intracellular concentration of glycerol increases in a similar manner in both yeasts in response to decreased a^ of the growth medium, whether this is adjusted with sodium chloride or PEG 200 (polyethylene glycol, average molecular weight 200). However, glycerol accumulation occurs by different means in the two yeasts. The major factor responsible for the increase in the intracellular concentration of glycerol in rouxii is that, as the a^ of the growth medium is lowered, …
Poverty In Australia With Particular Reference To The Role Of Education As An Anti-Poverty Strategy, John W. Curry
Poverty In Australia With Particular Reference To The Role Of Education As An Anti-Poverty Strategy, John W. Curry
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The paper attempts a comprehensive investigation of the question of poverty and begins by placing the problem in its economic perspective as part of the overall economic problem. The poor themselves, are well aware of the matter of "the scarcity of resources" and their difficulty centres on their relative position to that of the rest of society.
But while most people have a vague notion of "poverty" as it exists in society today, they are often unaware of the distinction between absolute and relative poverty. While cases of absolute poverty still occur in Australia, the incidence of this has decreased …
Australian Energy Policy And Its Likely Impact On Rural Industry Costs And Profitability, Ian Fliedner
Australian Energy Policy And Its Likely Impact On Rural Industry Costs And Profitability, Ian Fliedner
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
During the past three years petrol pricing arrangements in Australia have undergone several major changes. In particular, the 1977-78 Budget introduced a new set of crude oil pricing arrangements which were to have wide ranging ramifications over the next decade- for all consumers. These pricing arrangements were amended in the 1978-79 Budget to encompass a policy of moving Australia's oil prices to world market prices immediately. The impact of these petroleum price increases on the rural sector in aggregate is estimated, for example, at approximately $36 million in the 1977-78 period and $69 million in the 1978-79 period. This represents …
Income Distribution, Employment And Economic Growth : Issues In A Development Planning Framework With Application To The Economy Of Fiji, James F. Guest
Income Distribution, Employment And Economic Growth : Issues In A Development Planning Framework With Application To The Economy Of Fiji, James F. Guest
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Planning systems for economic development have been adopted by many countries (in more or less sophisticated forms) as a means of formalising national objectives, allocating scarce resources to achieve those objectives, and judging the relative merits of development policies. Recent literature in development economics stresses that 'economic development' involves more than achieving a satisfactory growth of conventionally measured per capita incomes: it also requires a reduction in unemployment and a reduction in the degree of inequality of income distribution. The challenge laid down to planners by the new development economics is to incorporate explicit mechanisms for dealing with these issues …
Religious Attitudes In Australian Literature Of The 1890s, M. Zaunbrecher
Religious Attitudes In Australian Literature Of The 1890s, M. Zaunbrecher
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Religion has not been attributed major significance in Australian history and culture. However, an analysis of the literature of the 189Qs reveals, a concern to find a religious interpretation of the meaning of life in Australia.
The Energy Spectrum Of Neutrons In A Pulsed Fast Assembly, Stewart Whittlestone
The Energy Spectrum Of Neutrons In A Pulsed Fast Assembly, Stewart Whittlestone
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Time-dependent neutron energy spectra in the range of 0.6 to 6.4 MeV have been measured in a depleted uranium assembly. In order to gain a maximum amount of information about the interactions of neutrons with uranium, the detector was placed inside the stack. This necessitated development of a small yet sensitive neutron spectrometer. The liquid s c i n t i l l a t o r NE213 was chosen. An optical system was developed which collected about 80% of the light from the s c i n t i l l a t or and transmitted i t along …
Pre-Neighbourhood A-Semi-Lattices, Neighbourhood Lattices, And Their Associated Continuous Functions, Frank P. Prokop
Pre-Neighbourhood A-Semi-Lattices, Neighbourhood Lattices, And Their Associated Continuous Functions, Frank P. Prokop
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis is concerned with defining a topology-like structure on A-semi-lattices and examining the properties of the associated continuous functions. A general pre-neighbourhood structure, which satisfies the poset analogues of the neighbourhood systems of points in a topological space, is introduced on an A-semi-lattice, and is used to define open elements. However, without the complete atomic Boolean structure of P(X), the supremum of pre-neighbourhood open elements need not be open. Neighbourhood structures are introduced on arbitrary lattices to remove this deficiency.
Topics In Population Dynamics, Graham Kenneth Winley
Topics In Population Dynamics, Graham Kenneth Winley
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis is primarily concerned with age dependent population models and in particular with the integral equation initially described by Lotka, A.J. Relationships are developed between this integral equation and various other formulations such as partial differential equations and difference equations. As an example of such relationships the set of differential difference equations representing a multi stage population is reduced to a single integral equation. Many models are systems of autonomous differential equations such as the logistic. For these to be valid population models they must represent the mean behaviour of some associated stochastic model. It is shown that if …
The Time Dependent Net Maternity Function, Pietro Cerone
The Time Dependent Net Maternity Function, Pietro Cerone
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis examines the resultant behaviour of a population in response to change of the age-specific birth and death rates with time. The deterministic one sex population model of Sharpe and Lotka is used as the basis for the analysis. In particular, the asymptotic behaviour is determined for a population with a time dependent net maternity function. Thus, the present study may be looked upon as representing a generaliisation of the stble population theory to include models of time dependent vital rates of birth and death. Lplace transform techniques are used extensively throughout the present work.
Kemp Smith's Account Of Kant's Transcendental Deduction, Lindsay K. Porter
Kemp Smith's Account Of Kant's Transcendental Deduction, Lindsay K. Porter
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
I have found it necessary to provide as a background to my critique of Kemp Smith's commentary to Kant's transcendental deduction a statement of my own views on the deduction. This statement amounts largely to a catalogue of what to me are obscurities in the argument. There is a detailed examination of A98-112, in the course of which the largely parallel argument of B129-43 is also examined. Some topics dealt with are the senses in which Kant uses 'synthesis' and 'unity', the paragraph at A1G4-5, the doctrine that the analytic unity of apperception presupposes the synthetic unity of apperception, the …
