Effects Of Light And Temperature On Germination Of Pyxidanthera Brevifolia Wells (Diapensiaceae), Wade A. Wall, Jacob L. Hilton, Thomas R. Wentworth, Janet B. Gray, Matthew G. Hohmann, William A. Hoffmann

US Army Corps of Engineers

Pyxidanthera brevifolia is an evergreen semiwoody cushion plant endemic to the Sandhills of North and South Carolina, with the majority of populations occurring on Fort Bragg Military Reservation in North Carolina. Currently the species is listed as Endangered in North Carolina and is designated as a Species at Risk (SAR) by the US Department of Defense. Previous studies have suggested that seeds may not be viable because they failed to germinate under controlled conditions. Our objectives in this study were to attempt germination of Pyxidanthera brevifolia seeds, determine the best temperature conditions for germination, and understand more about germination requirements …

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) requires that the Corps of Engineers (Corps), in coordination with the appropriate resource agencies, will ensure that any action authorized, funded or carried out is not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of any federally listed threatened or endangered species or result in the destruction or adverse modification of critical habitat. On November 30, 2000, formal consultation between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Corps under Section 7 of the ESA culminated with the "Biological Opinion on the Operation of the Missouri River Main Stem System, Operation and Maintenance of the Missouri …

U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service Biological Opinion On The Operation Of The Missouri River Main Stem Reservoir System, Operation And Maintenance Of The Missouri River Bank Stabilization And Navigation Project, And Operation Of The Kansas River Reservoir System

US Army Corps of Engineers

The Corps of Engineers provides the primary operational management of the Missouri River and is responsible under the Endangered Species Act to take actions within its authorities to conserve listed species. On April 3, 2000, the Corps asked the Fish and Wildlife Service to formally consult under the Endangered Species Act on the Operations of the Missouri River Main Stem System, and related Operations of the Kansas River Tributary Reservoirs, and the Operations and Maintenance of the Missouri River Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project. The Corps of Engineers prepared biological assessments for each of these projects and determined that their …

Finding Of No Significant Impact Bank Stabilization Project Ponca State Park, Nebraska Missouri National Recreational River Jan 1999

Finding Of No Significant Impact Bank Stabilization Project Ponca State Park, Nebraska Missouri National Recreational River

US Army Corps of Engineers

An environmental assessment has been prepared that summarizes the expected effects of the proposed project on the existing environment. This is a project proposed by the Omaha District, Corps of Engineers to halt the erosion occurring along the riverfront at Ponca State Park in Dixon County, Nebraska, and protect the access road to the park's public boat ramp. This project is authorized under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act amendment of 1978 (Public Law 95-625). The proposed project is located along the right bank of the Missouri River between River Miles (RM) 753.9 and 753.5 at Ponca State Park about …

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau Jan 1987

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau

US Army Corps of Engineers

The concentrations of the heavy metals- copper, chromium, lead, zinc- in the biota of the Missouri River were measured at a control site upstream of Sioux City and at a site downstream of the city. Bioconcentration factors for each of the metals were calculated for fish, periphyton, and invertebrates, and the concentrations of metals in the river sediments were measured.

Concentrations of the same metals were measured in the sediment, water, periphyton, invertebrates, zooplankton, and fish of Snyder's Bend Lake. Bioconcentration factors were calculated for each of the biological communities and were found to be very similar to those found …

Missouri National Recreational River: Native American Cultural Resources, John Ludwickson, Donald Blakeslee, John O'Shea Jan 1981

Missouri National Recreational River: Native American Cultural Resources, John Ludwickson, Donald Blakeslee, John O'Shea

US Army Corps of Engineers

An inventory of known and identifiable cultural resources referrable to Native American populations was undertaken for a corridor along the new Missouri National Recreational River, roughly from Gavin's Foint Dam to Ponca, Nebraska. These resources included archaeological sites and collections, ethnographic and ethnohistorical data and relevant environmental background information. Using these data the Native American occupation of the Missouri National Recreational River area was synthesized into a regional overview which stresses culture-historical developments and changing adaptations to the natural environment. Problems for continuing research utilizing existing archaeological collections were developed, and recommendations for continued field work to fill in gaps …
