A debate exists in the literature over whether dyspareunia should be classified as a sexual dysfunction or as a pain disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. We do not know, however, the extent to which women with this disorder experience it as more of a pain problem, or more of a sexual problem, or whether both aspects are equally salient. Cognitive methodologies have been informative in the study of sexual information and stimulus processing. Members of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators were surveyed about their mentoring relationships with both male and female mentors. Their preferences and actual received functions were assessed to see if their expectations differed from their actual experiences, as well as the functions, barriers and outcomes experienced with respect to the gender of the mentor. The results of the t-test for the expectations and the actual experiences revealed that six of nine functions were significantly different, with the actual functions provided falling short of preferences. Nine different methods of measuring body composition were compared to underwater weighing in average Caucasian adult men and women, to determine which method correlated highest with UWW. Fifty participants were tested on underwater weighing, air displacement plethysmoghraphy, Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, bioelectrical impedance analysis, ultrasound, near infrared reactance, and skinfolds---sum of 7, 4, and 3 sites; All correlations for both genders were high at the .05 level. For men the highest correlation was between UWW and the sum of 4 skinfolds at .971 and the lowest between UWW and BIA of .748. For women the highest correlation was between UWW …

The purpose of this work is to examine the role of race, ethnicity, and gender in the treatment of Native American, women, and Latino defendants and inmates by Southwestern courts and prisons from 1890 to 1930. This dissertation addresses issues such as the types of trials Native Americans, women and Latinos received from Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico courts and what types of sentences they received. Since Title IX was signed into law in 1972, opportunities for females to participate in collegiate sport have increased tremendously. But these advancements have not held true for women head coaches in collegiate sport. For female head coaches, in fact, the inverse has resulted. Whereas prior to 1972, women led most collegiate women's athletic teams, today the majority of women's collegiate athletic teams are led by men. Numerous studies have revealed that African American women are at an increased risk for the development of cervical cancer. The purpose of this study was to assess the cervical cancer knowledge and disease prevention behaviors of African American women. This descriptive study utilized the Health Relief Model, which proposes that knowledge serves as a predictor of disease prevention behaviors. Fifty-two African American women were surveyed. Results revealed that 25.5% of respondents were cognizant of the fact that Pap smears screen for cervical cancer specifically. But, only 25.0% of study participants were able to identify HPV as the major cause of …

Submission to the desires of others and an objectified relationship to one's body have been identified as two major components of femininity ideology. Research suggests that over-adherence to feminine ideals may result in reduced well-being, the extremes of which can be depression, anxiety, eating disordered behavior, low self-esteem and academic performance deficits. Current data show that approximately 65--75% of the teaching force is women, yet only 12--13% of today's public school superintendents are women. The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership styles, behaviors, and attitudes of diverse women superintendents. Nine tenets of effective leadership, taken from extant research, evolved from the WILD (Women in Leadership Development) Project, a study of women in executive leadership positions across multiple fields and disciplines (Wolverton, et al., 2003). Contemporary studies that have looked at women faculty work have been mixed in their findings about the relationship between gender and job satisfaction. Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) is a prevalent and disabling condition for women and their partners. With one in three women experiencing a significant lack of interest in sexual activity, it is the most common female sexual dysfunction. It is also the most treatment resistant. Despite increased awareness of the problem, we have seen an increase in cases of low sexual desire over the past two decades. This study is based on the ideas and studies of Erving Goffman (1922-1982), an influential sociologist and communications scholar (Manning, 1992). Most prior scholars, such as McLaughlin (1999) and Reichert (2003), have chosen to simply repeat and reaffirm Goffman's themes, while largely ignoring that both times and society have changed. Thus, this study proposes not only to repeat Goffman's methods, but also to extend and retest his findings in the modern day. The present study explored changes in patients' psychological well-being and relationship adjustment at three- and six-months after either Lap-Band or Gastric Bypass Surgery. Sixty-eight women completed the battery, which consisted of standardized questionnaires of self-esteem, body-image, psychological symptomatology, and assertiveness, as well as marital and sexual functioning, prior to surgery and then at the two follow-ups. Also included was the assessment of patient expectations of relationship change and the pilot Weight-Related Relationship Adjustment Questionnaires (WRRAQ's). A recent coronary risk factor, and one believed to be and important biochemical marker of Coronary Heart Disease, is elevated levels of serum homocysteine (Boushley et al., 1995; Malinow et al., 1994; Malinow et al., 1999; Nygard et al., 1995; Stampfer et al., 1992). Serum homocysteine levels above 10 umol/L are considered elevated. There are several unalterable factors, which result in the elevation of homocysteine such as heredity, age, and gender. This study examines the process of same-sex bonding within the Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) women's community. More specifically, this research measures the impact of same-sex bonding on life-satisfaction and length of sobriety for alcoholic women in A.A. Linear regression analyses of survey data from female A.A. members (N = 293) indicate (1) a statistically significant relationship between Respondents' same-sex social bonding and life-satisfaction, and (2) that the effect of this social bonding on the number of years respondents have remained sober is mediated by life-satisfaction. This dissertation explores how a tribal construct of gender relations---gender complementarity---functions in the works of Zitkala-Sa (Yankton Sioux), Leslie Marmon Silko (Laguna Pueblo), Louise Erdrich (Ojibwe), and Sherman Alexie (Spokane/Coeur d'Alene). Gender complementarity, or balanced reciprocity, acknowledges that the worlds of men and women are different but not generally perceived as hierarchical. If gender roles are not seen as unequal but simply different, the resulting political relationships do not necessarily result in power struggles for equality. Examining the political ramifications of gender complementarity for women in Native American literature is approached through the historical and cultural contexts of each specific …

This descriptive study examined the history of breast feeding experiences in women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and resided in a large southwestern city. A questionnaire modified by the researcher, based on previous research regarding lactation and breast cancer was used to collect demographic data, reproductive and breast cancer histories, and breast feeding practices for each of the subjects first five pregnancies. This research studied these women by investigating their migration to Las Vegas from small towns in the South and researching their working environment. Victims of domestic violence are often blamed for the violence they experience. Previous research has found that these victims experience many psychological difficulties while in the relationship. Fifty women that differed in amount of time out of their abusive situations were studied. Each subject completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2), the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS), and a brief demographic sheet; It was hypothesized that the longer the women had been out of the relationship the lower the levels of psychopathology they would exhibit. Results indicated that psychopathology levels did not significantly correlate with length of time since termination. Correlations …

This study uses a descriptive design to investigate how attending college may change a woman's perception of her happiness with her marriage or primary relationship. Also assessed is the presence of value change since entering college, and how such changes may affect the woman's perception of her marriage or relationship. Marital happiness was assessed in nine relationship domains by using a likert scale. The domains that showed a statistically significant decrease in marital/relationship happiness were: household responsibilities, social activities, money, and sex. This work examines the treatment Nevada's female prisoners received from Nevada's press, courts, and the Nevada State Prison from 1890 to 1930. It argues that gender perspectives held by Nevada's criminal justice officials caused them to treat female criminals both benevolently and harshly. This thesis also compares the treatment of minority women with Anglo women and finds minority women also received mixed treatment. Factors used to judge treatment include the sentences women received, how much of these sentences they served, the living conditions they faced at the Nevada State Prison and the conditions of their paroles and pardons.

Honor and the Southern Lady: The Persistence of Antebellum Ideology Among Elite Southern Women, 1820-1877 investigates whether the war permanently changed elite white women's legal, economic and social status, gender relations and race relations. Southern honor and slavery were the social and economic basis of the hierarchical order of antebellum Southern life affecting women's lives and worldview. The war forced elite women to assume a greater responsibility which resulted in a more independent self-image and in more difficult race relations. Southern life changed because of post-war economic deprivation and emancipation, but Southern culture, including its hierarchy, remained. Elite women's preceptions …
