Examining Women Faculty Experiences Using The Model Of Human Occupation Perspective: A Qualitative Approach In One Community College, Christine R Privott

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Occupations for women in the academy have been changing over the last century. Contemporary studies that have looked at women faculty work have been mixed in their findings about the relationship between gender and job satisfaction. Few studies have focused on two-year-college models of women's experiences as faculty; Set in the context of occupational science theories, this qualitative study explored the daily work of women faculty in one community college. The concept of faculty work was viewed through Kielhofner's Model of Human Occupation, which suggests that occupations are made up of three subsystems of human action or doing: volition, habituation, …

Colleges and universities have a social responsibility to help prepare the country's future workforce and leaders. All colleges and universities operate within a campus environment. Student affairs divisions exist on literally every campus in the country. Little is known about how the SSAO impact the development of the campus environment especially in terms of campus climate and culture. This study reports on how, by looking for discernible patterns across several higher education institution types---urban community college, rural community college, rural research university, religious-affiliated college, and metropolitan university, SSAOs impact the development of their campus environments, particularly as they relate to …

Why Does Passion Wane? A Qualitative Study Of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder In Married Women, Karen E Sims Jan 2007

Why Does Passion Wane? A Qualitative Study Of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder In Married Women, Karen E Sims

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) is a prevalent and disabling condition for women and their partners. With one in three women experiencing a significant lack of interest in sexual activity, it is the most common female sexual dysfunction. It is also the most treatment resistant. Despite increased awareness of the problem, we have seen an increase in cases of low sexual desire over the past two decades. There is currently no standard treatment modality recommended for HSDD because of difficulties (1) defining the vague concept and (2) establishing what is "normal." Recently, clinicians have favored a treatment relational approach because …

Homelessness: A Qualitative Genogram Analysis Of Trauma And Addictions, Lorraine K Moss

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study conducts a qualitative analysis of genograms based from a homeless population sample. The purpose of the study is to illustrate a pattern within the homeless population of a generational history of the conditions of traumatic experiences and addictions during childhood and young adulthood, prior to becoming homeless. This study is not intended to show causal relationships between the two conditions of homelessness, rather, a prior pattern of the two conditions; The data was collected by graduate students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, during the student's advanced practicum/internship classes occurring in the final year of the master …

A Qualitative Study Of The Perceived Psychosocial Outcomes Of Gastric Bypass Surgery, Lindsey Eva Bocchieri Jan 2001

A Qualitative Study Of The Perceived Psychosocial Outcomes Of Gastric Bypass Surgery, Lindsey Eva Bocchieri

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Attempts to understand postoperative psychosocial changes in the lives of individuals who have undergone gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity have (1) been guided by constructs emanating from the assumptions of researchers, and (2) have resulted in fragmented conclusions that catalogue changes without theoretically integrating them. Using unstructured and semi-structured interviews and in-depth focus groups, patients were asked in an open-ended fashion about the ways, if any, in which gastric bypass surgery had affected their lives. Grounded theory methodology was utilized in order to identify emergent themes and their interrelations, and build a meaningful, comprehensive theory of life after gastric …

The Problem Gambler In Las Vegas: Quantitative And Qualitative Explorations, Bo Jason Bernhard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Problem gambling behaviors among the adult population in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada are analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Responses to problem gambling questions from 1992 and 1995 telephone surveys are examined. On the 1992 survey, which focused on lifetime problem gambling behaviors, 5.8% of local residents indicated that they had a gambling problem. On the 1995 survey, which inquired about past-year gambling problems, 6.6% of the local population indicated that they had a gambling problem. Demographic information on the self-identified problem gamblers in the surveys is presented as well. Because survey methodology is limited in its …

Voices Of Three African American Female College Presidents: A Qualitative Study Of Their Journeys, Maria Teresa Alves Williams Jan 1997

Voices Of Three African American Female College Presidents: A Qualitative Study Of Their Journeys, Maria Teresa Alves Williams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There are many prevailing myths that have influenced society's perception of Black women. As a result, a tradition of negativity surrounds African American women in American society. It is these "negative perceptions and misinterpretation of African American women's behavior that found its way into colleges and universities" (Myers, 1991, p. 9). Unlike White women, and Black men, Black women in academe experience double jeopardy; race and gender biases (Gregory, 1995; Myers, 2002). Research on Black women has found that they are concentrated at the lowest academic ranks, non-tenured, paid less than their male and White female counterparts, and promoted at …
