A Matter Of Faith: A Study Of The Muddy Mission, Monique Elaine Kimball Jan 1997

A Matter Of Faith: A Study Of The Muddy Mission, Monique Elaine Kimball

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Leonard J. Arrington wrote about the Mormon development of the Great Basin from 1847 to 1900 in Great Basin Kingdom (1966). He summarized Mormon economic ideals in seven principles which served as the basis of his argument about their success in the Great Basin; The Muddy Mission, established on the Muddy River (Nevada) in 1865, served three purposes, foremost was cotton production. Church leaders believed that the successes experienced in Utah would be repeated in the southern regions. Unfortunately, by 1871 politics and economics ended any successes the Muddy Mission had; Arrington's principles represent a Mormon's ethnographic statement about the …

A Study To Determine The Impact Of Summer Teacher Externships On Curriculum And Teaching Methods, Andrea C Anderson Jan 1997

A Study To Determine The Impact Of Summer Teacher Externships On Curriculum And Teaching Methods, Andrea C Anderson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effectiveness of summer teacher externships on affecting change in a teacher's curriculum or method of instruction so that students are better prepared to meet the employment needs of business and industry upon graduation; The federal School to Work Opportunities Act of 1994 was designed to create the mechanism to promote a partnership between education and business. The goal of this partnership is to involve business in education, and educators in business, in order to give America's students the high skills needed to compete in today's global economy; One of the programs …

Improved Communication Skills Through Customized Training Programs: An Applied Study Of Organizational Development, Angela Autumn Betke Jan 1997

Improved Communication Skills Through Customized Training Programs: An Applied Study Of Organizational Development, Angela Autumn Betke

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As developmental training programs grow in organization life, customized training programs including observation, collaboration with management, data gathering, research of materials to be used, and evaluation become necessary. Using these, and other methods of research, consultants are able to develop programs which focus directly on the specific needs of an independent organization and its employees; This research evaluated internal organizational communication problems "by facilitating discovery and examination of the underlying symbolic structures, constraints, and opportunities of organizational life" (Kreps, 1983; Schein, 1987; 1969). The data gathered was "generated by organizational communication research to provide insight into organizational phenomena and redirect …

Manganese Transport: A Preliminary Study Of The Three Kids Mine And Surrounding Area, Corie Ann Naugle Jan 1997

Manganese Transport: A Preliminary Study Of The Three Kids Mine And Surrounding Area, Corie Ann Naugle

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research partially answered some of the questions regarding the movement of soil away from the Three Kids Mine. Flooding appears to be the strongest potential explanations for transport. Soil samples were treated by three methods: total digestion with HF, leaching with 1% HNO{dollar}\sb3,{dollar} and leaching with acidified water. The samples were then analyzed with an ICP or AA spectrophotometer for the presence of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, or zinc; Data shows that there is up to 40% manganese at some sites, and that 14% to 35% of the elements studied will dissolve in 1% …

A Study Of The Landscaped Environments In Urban Resort Hotels As An Inducement For Secondary Commercial Activities: Three Case Studies In Las Vegas, Jianping Shu Jan 1997

A Study Of The Landscaped Environments In Urban Resort Hotels As An Inducement For Secondary Commercial Activities: Three Case Studies In Las Vegas, Jianping Shu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study analyzed types, layout, and space relationships of landscape environments and commercial areas in urban resort casino hotels, and investigated three resort casino hotels in Las Vegas as case studies to examine how developed landscaped environments function and provide an amenity which can enhance commercial activity. A systematic analysis of this symbiotic relationship between landscape environments and commercial space has demonstrated the relative effectiveness of combining these elements as an interactive design concept when compared with treating gardens as a feature separate from commercial space; The analysis process was conducted by site visitations to analyze the space relationship between …

Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Study In The Quick Service Industry, Lu Hou Tsai Jan 1997

Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Study In The Quick Service Industry, Lu Hou Tsai

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) is a class of job related behaviors which have been suggested as a fruitful addition to traditional conceptions of job performance. OCB is defined as those behaviors which are discretionary, are not formally recognized by the organizational reward system, and in the aggregate, promotes organizational effectiveness; There were several questions that were examined. The first question asked if OCB have a direct relationship with company task performance. The second question asked if OCB have a direct relationship with company conceptual performance, the third question examined if OCB had a direct relationship with additional service performance. The …

Theoretical Study Of Crystal-Amorphous Transition In (111) Silicon, And Oxidation Of (100) Silicon, Suresh Gorantla Jan 1997

Theoretical Study Of Crystal-Amorphous Transition In (111) Silicon, And Oxidation Of (100) Silicon, Suresh Gorantla

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Molecular Beam Epitaxial (MBE) silicon (Si) (111) grown below a certain temperature results in amorphous structure due to the limited surface mobility of atoms for finding the correct epitaxial sites. A theoretical model based on the formation of stacking fault like defects as a precursor to the amorphous transition of the (111)Si layer is developed. The model is simulated based on a stochastic model approach and the results are compared to that of experiments for temperatures in the range of {dollar}500{-}900\sp\circ{dollar}K and growth rate in the range of 0.1-3.0 {dollar}\A/sec.{dollar} The agreement between the results obtained and experimental observations is …

Who Is Most Likely To Remain On Welfare?, Sonya M Kessinger Jan 1997

Who Is Most Likely To Remain On Welfare?, Sonya M Kessinger

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent welfare reform legislation imposes a five year limit on federal welfare benefits. This study examines earnings, family structure and race to determine their impact on the associated probabilities of remaining on welfare. Data of families that received AFDC in the first year of a two-year period is analyzed. In the second year, some of these families stopped receiving benefits while others continued on welfare. Based on characteristics from the first year, a logit model develops the probabilities of leaving welfare rolls in the second year. These characteristics include earnings, employment, the average state benefit, age, gender, marital status, children, …
