The Lost Promise Of Heaven: An Examination Of Gender In Children's Literature, 1790--1830, Ea Nicole Madrigal Jan 2008

The Lost Promise Of Heaven: An Examination Of Gender In Children's Literature, 1790--1830, Ea Nicole Madrigal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The United States republic can be defined by its cultural, social, and political change. Historians like Linda Kerber contend that this moment magnified gender difference. This was in fact a time that gender expectations were further defined. However, representations of gender in children's literature indicate that although some stories illustrated different roles and expectations for male and female readers, there were other stories that emphasized similarities between all children; Analogous to Susan Juster's findings from this period that men and women described religious conversion experiences similarly, religious children's literature detailed the spiritual commonalities of boys and girls. Gender was insignificant …

Female Gender Themes In Women's Magazines: A Content Analysis Testing And Extending Themes Uncovered By Erving Goffman, Sarah Elizabeth Morton Jan 2006

Female Gender Themes In Women's Magazines: A Content Analysis Testing And Extending Themes Uncovered By Erving Goffman, Sarah Elizabeth Morton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is based on the ideas and studies of Erving Goffman (1922-1982), an influential sociologist and communications scholar (Manning, 1992). Most prior scholars, such as McLaughlin (1999) and Reichert (2003), have chosen to simply repeat and reaffirm Goffman's themes, while largely ignoring that both times and society have changed. Thus, this study proposes not only to repeat Goffman's methods, but also to extend and retest his findings in the modern day. A quantitative content analysis will be employed, using the following women's magazines: Cosmopolitan, In Style, Allure, Glamour, and Marie Claire. The replication of this study is imperative in …

Customer And Manager's Perception And Preference On Food Server Gender In Fine-Dining Establishments, Watcharobon Wiraboot Jan 2006

Customer And Manager's Perception And Preference On Food Server Gender In Fine-Dining Establishments, Watcharobon Wiraboot

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

American fine dining established itself as a lucrative business opportunity in the 19th century and was significantly influenced by European dining practices, which mostly notably included the practice of hiring only male servers (Prewitt, 2000). Despite changes in contemporary fine dining that are trending toward a less formal environment, some restaurants still hire only male servers. The purpose of this study is to explore how managers and customers feel about server gender in fine-dining establishments. It will also determine whether a disconnect exists between customers and managers' perceptions regarding the gender of fine dining servers; Qualitative research, using the Zaltman …

Acculturation And Sexuality: Investigating Gender Differences In Erotic Plasticity, Lorraine Benuto Jan 2006

Acculturation And Sexuality: Investigating Gender Differences In Erotic Plasticity, Lorraine Benuto

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Baumeister's theory on female erotic plasticity is supported by a significant body of data that suggests that female sexuality is more malleable than male sexuality and thus more greatly influenced by external factors. Seeking to test Baumeister's theory, this study examined the potential differential impact of the acculturation process on the sexual attitudes and experiences of 188 college men and 310 college women. Sexual attitudes and experiences were measured using the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory and acculturation level was determined using the General Ethnicity Questionnaire. Between-gender analyses revealed that the acculturation process did not have more of a liberalizing effect …

Violent Women In Film And The Sociological Relevance Of The Contemporary Action Heroine, Kathryn A Gilpatric Jan 2006

Violent Women In Film And The Sociological Relevance Of The Contemporary Action Heroine, Kathryn A Gilpatric

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research examines mainstream representations and imagery of violent women in American cinema in a broad sense, and looks more specifically at the sociological relevance of the contemporary filmic action heroine. This research is not interpretive in nature but instead draws upon original data gained from an extensive content analysis spanning a 15-year period from 1991 to 2005. In addition, the research includes secondary source data gathered from movie industry statistics and industry reports in order to provide an empirically descriptive analysis of violent female action characters in contemporary American film; While many feminist film theorists argue that female action …

The Social Significance Of Mint Tea Consumption In Morocco: Reflections On Its Symbolic Representation Of Muslim Faith, Gender Prescriptions, Socio-Economics And Hospitality, Monika Sudakov Jan 2005

The Social Significance Of Mint Tea Consumption In Morocco: Reflections On Its Symbolic Representation Of Muslim Faith, Gender Prescriptions, Socio-Economics And Hospitality, Monika Sudakov

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this analysis is to explore the ways in which the Moroccan ritual of mint tea consumption is symbolic of and informed by the underlying core values of Moroccan culture. In particular, issues of Muslim faith, gender prescriptions, socio-economics and hospitality will be explored in detail as they pertain to the ritual of mint tea consumption. The analysis will show that ultimately "what and how you drink is what you are." Understanding the particular consumptive practices of a culture is key to understanding what is considered to be "right" and "natural" behavior by individuals within that culture.

Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton May 2004

Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Quilting is a reflection of women's roles in the family. What happened to quilting between 1940 and 1970 is important to examine because it tells us much about the transformation of women from producers to consumers. In the twentieth century, quilts were increasingly replaced by mass produced blankets. While quilting literature has argued that quilting, for all practical purposes, ceased between 1940 and 1970, women resisted the change to consumerism by continuing to produce quilts and negotiating their use of mass production; The portrayal of quilting in magazines shifted from an integral role as thrifty and decorative to being almost …

Eye-Tracking In Sex Research: Comparing Genders On Processing Of Erotic Stimuli, Amy D Lykins Jan 2004

Eye-Tracking In Sex Research: Comparing Genders On Processing Of Erotic Stimuli, Amy D Lykins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The fact that sexual experiences, comprising cognitive, affective, and behavioral components, are private and socio-culturally laden has limited the types of methodology useful in exploring their characteristics. Eye-tracking methodology has the capacity to overcome some methodological difficulties We presented men and women with erotic and non-erotic pictures to examine the oft-published gender difference in self-reported attentional focus to erotica (i.e., men are most interested in body parts, and women are most interested in romantic context). After adjusting for scene region size, we found no gender differences in the amount of time that men and women looked at different aspects of …

Gender Parity In Political Coverage: A Content Analysis Of Major Kenyan Newspapers, Kulamo C Bullo Jan 2004

Gender Parity In Political Coverage: A Content Analysis Of Major Kenyan Newspapers, Kulamo C Bullo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Media coverage of parliamentary races should be fair and issue-oriented. This study examined the newspaper coverage of the 2002 Kenyan parliamentary elections for the seats in which there were both male and female contestants. The study examined three national newspapers from the day parliament went on recess, signaling beginning of campaigns, to eve of elections. Four hypotheses postulating differences in quantity and quality of coverage for both male and female candidates were tested and support found for all the hypotheses. The findings indicate differences in the media coverage of male and female politicians during election campaigns. Female candidates are likely …

Effects Of Gender And Seating Arrangement On Perceptions Of Leadership, Danielle Jackson Cervantes Jan 2004

Effects Of Gender And Seating Arrangement On Perceptions Of Leadership, Danielle Jackson Cervantes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The current study examines the effects that gender and seating arrangement on perceptions of leadership. In order to determine current attitudes regarding women as leaders, this study examines factors that may influence people's perceptions about leadership and gender. Three different hypotheses were tested. The findings are as follows: Seating arrangement is still seen as an important factor when determining leadership, specifically the head of the table positions. Secondly, in this study, men were seen as being the leader of a group significantly more often than women. Lastly, sex of the subject did seem to influence the subjects' choice of leader, …

An Analysis Of Changes In Labor Market Discrimination By Gender, 1984--2000, Andrew Lee Powell Jan 2003

An Analysis Of Changes In Labor Market Discrimination By Gender, 1984--2000, Andrew Lee Powell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The effect of labor market discrimination on the wages of male and female workers has been previously studied (Blinder, 1973; Oaxaca, 1973; Reimers, 1983; Cotton, 1988; Neumark, 1988; and Oaxaca and Ransom, 1994). Changes in the amount of discrimination and the variables that contribute most significantly to it's presence over time have not been dealt with in a consistent manner. The following study attempts to improve upon the existing literature by examining the changing nature of labor market discrimination, by gender, over time, and introducing a new methodology. I find that discrimination by gender is present in the labor market …

Gender Differences In Predictors Of Filipino Out-Marriage, Bryan Jonathan James Jan 2003

Gender Differences In Predictors Of Filipino Out-Marriage, Bryan Jonathan James

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Previous research demonstrates that Filipinas have higher rates of out-marriage to whites than Filipinos. This thesis asks, what factors explain this gender difference in Filipino/as' out-marriage patterns? Using a sample of Filipino/as married to whites, I examine gender differences in rates of out-marriage, employ logistic regression to predict the likelihood of out-marriage, and test for gender differences in the effects of independent variables. Bivariate results demonstrate a small, but significant gender difference in out-marriage. Results show that when controlling for all variables, there is no gender difference in the likelihood of out-marriage. However, the effects of spouse's citizenship and spouse's …

Gender Differences In Cognitive Interference With Sexual Arousal, Sarah Elizabeth Nunnink Jan 2002

Gender Differences In Cognitive Interference With Sexual Arousal, Sarah Elizabeth Nunnink

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It is well documented that cognitive interference detrimentally influences sexuality, but little is known about the content of that interference. This study compared the self-reports of 220 college men and 337 college women on two types of cognitive interference during sex, performance-oriented and appearance-oriented. Also assessed via use of the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory and the Sexual History Form were: sexual satisfaction, psychological distress, sexual knowledge, sexual experiences, sexual attitudes, sexual fantasy, body image, affect, and sexual functioning, all areas thought to be related to sexual functioning. As predicted, findings indicated that women were more concerned with their own appearance …

Political Ramifications Of Gender Complementarity For Women In Native American Literature, Patrice Eunice Marie Hollrah Jan 2001

Political Ramifications Of Gender Complementarity For Women In Native American Literature, Patrice Eunice Marie Hollrah

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores how a tribal construct of gender relations---gender complementarity---functions in the works of Zitkala-Sa (Yankton Sioux), Leslie Marmon Silko (Laguna Pueblo), Louise Erdrich (Ojibwe), and Sherman Alexie (Spokane/Coeur d'Alene). Gender complementarity, or balanced reciprocity, acknowledges that the worlds of men and women are different but not generally perceived as hierarchical. If gender roles are not seen as unequal but simply different, the resulting political relationships do not necessarily result in power struggles for equality. Examining the political ramifications of gender complementarity for women in Native American literature is approached through the historical and cultural contexts of each specific …

Sex, Gender And Genesis: A Cixousian Exploration Of Language In The Gay Marriage Debates, Nancy Jean Martin Jan 2000

Sex, Gender And Genesis: A Cixousian Exploration Of Language In The Gay Marriage Debates, Nancy Jean Martin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

How does language structure patriarchy? How are gendered language and creation story imagery evidenced in contemporary debates on gay marriage? Helene Cixous suggests that Western thought is organized around binary, hierarchical oppositions---the most fundamental of which are male over female and masculine over feminine. Language and its connections to psychological and her/historical origins are central to her work. Cixous suggests that the separation of male and female, masculine and feminine, result in a war of sexual difference. I explore these themes with a feminist deconstruction of Internet sites in support of and against gay marriage. I then utilize Cixous's feminine …

Gender Tragedy In George Eliot's "Mill On The Floss", Elizabeth Anne Nielsen Jan 1999

Gender Tragedy In George Eliot's "Mill On The Floss", Elizabeth Anne Nielsen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis centers around the gender roles present during the Victorian era and how George Eliot examined these roles in Mill on the Floss. She did so through her representations of Tom and Maggie Tulliver and by examining how each of these characters deal with the respective roles for his or her gender while living during the Victorian age. Tom strictly follows the imposed roles for his gender, while Maggie refuses to live within the social boundaries set for her own. The societal restrictions and how each deals with them is symbolically represented in their physical descriptions as well. Each …

Feminist Theory: Gender, Race And Recidivism, Amie M Shuck Jan 1997

Feminist Theory: Gender, Race And Recidivism, Amie M Shuck

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Feminists and women of color have criticized criminological theories for being developed by white middle-class men to explain white male delinquency, and thus, are limited in their understanding of crime and deviance within a gender or racial context. The purpose of this study is to use a series of logistic regression models to evaluate this assertion regarding criminological 'theories' of recidivism. The results indicate that there are substantive differences in statistically significant coefficients, models explanatory power, and percent improvement in models ability to correctly classify recidivists between gender, race and gender/race models. These findings suggest that further research should be …

A Bridge Across The Gender Gap: The Role Of Men In Feminist Discourse, Gabrielle Kenton Renshaw Jan 1996

A Bridge Across The Gender Gap: The Role Of Men In Feminist Discourse, Gabrielle Kenton Renshaw

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The ongoing discourse about meanings and impacts of feminism is a dynamic process of ideas influencing ideas. The process directs the course of the development of feminist theory. Most of the discourse is directed at women by women, but many men have also contributed to the dialectic. This study is an examination of those contributions by men as well as an attempt to understand the impact they have on the women's movement.

Where Are The Girls? Gender Differences In Secondary Science And Math Grades, Jeff Matthew Ommen Jan 1995

Where Are The Girls? Gender Differences In Secondary Science And Math Grades, Jeff Matthew Ommen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To investigate gender differences in secondary science and math grades, I used a cumulative numerical grade, a method to reduce a single student's many grades into a single number. Subjects were 640 students, who graduated from two small, mid-west high schools from the years of 1986-1993. Gender differences in cumulative numerical grades were not continuously supported in single class tests, in single school tests, or combined school tests. There were instances gender differences in cumulative numerical grade were upheld, however. A definite interaction was evident between math and science cumulative numerical grades. The differences between male and female cumulative numerical …

Sexuality Research: Untested Gender Assumptions Amid Paradigm Shifts, Donna J Walker Jan 1993

Sexuality Research: Untested Gender Assumptions Amid Paradigm Shifts, Donna J Walker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Content analysis of 803 sexuality research abstracts selected from Sociological Abstracts published from January 1974 to August 1992 answers three questions: (1) Are there trends in sexuality research? (2) Is there a paradigm shift? and (3) Is gender differentiation present? Research between 1973 and 1991 displayed a consistent division between the positivist "nature" paradigm and the interactionist "nurture" paradigm. The proportion of studies which attempt to be non-gender specific has declined annually while researchers have consistently neglected to study male sexuality. Although there has been little change in basic principles, there have been trends in interpretations of research data. Conclusions …

George Eliot: Beyond Feminism, Mary J Dengler Jan 1993

George Eliot: Beyond Feminism, Mary J Dengler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The three central conflicts of George Eliot's life--an emotional conflict with male rejection, an intellectual conflict with orthodox Christianity, and a gender conflict with the limitations imposed on women--can be attributed largely to the nineteenth-century feminine ideologies. While Eliot used her nonfiction to criticize the ideas responsible for her conflicts, she used her poetry and fiction to dramatize the conflicts and develop an ideal of humanity. Eliot considered feminism, in Romola, as a resolution to these conflicts, then moved beyond feminism to develop her human ideal. This ideal, which transcends gender ideologies in response to natural and moral law, posits …

Gender Discrimination And The Future Of Equality, Clotilde Ann Casados Mueller Jan 1992

Gender Discrimination And The Future Of Equality, Clotilde Ann Casados Mueller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Sex discrimination is the hot topic of the 1990's. Key events occurred in 1991 that propelled the issue into America's living rooms. Starting with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1991, these events raised new social consciousness on women's rights. Events such as the confirmation of Justice Clarence Thomas, two highly publicized rape trials involving newsmaker-men, and the release of the "glass ceiling" report by the U.S. Secretary of Labor that promised vigorous action against violators of sex discrimination created a new awareness; Also, two new books emerged, one citing the "victimization" of women by men, the media, …

Role Conflict Among Women Graduate Students: A Matter Of Gender, Nancy Lee Downey Jan 1990

Role Conflict Among Women Graduate Students: A Matter Of Gender, Nancy Lee Downey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explores ways in which women balance the demands of graduate school with other social roles and examines factors affecting role conflicts they encounter. Based on responses from a mail questionnaire, the survey describes experiences of 461 women graduate students at University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1989. Moving beyond research that often considered only structural indicators as causes of role conflict, traditional and egalitarian gender ideologies within marriage are shown to have significant effect on wife-student role conflict. Various coping strategies are seen as indicators of role negotiating processes initiated by women in an effort to achieve personal …

Effects Of Athletic Participation And Gender On Moral Judgment In Student Athletes And Nonathletes, Elizabeth Mary Baldizan Jan 1990

Effects Of Athletic Participation And Gender On Moral Judgment In Student Athletes And Nonathletes, Elizabeth Mary Baldizan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess moral development of student athletes and nonathletes, employing James Rest's (1979, 1988) Defining Issues Test (DIT). Rest adapted Kohlberg's cognitive moral development theory to an objective measurement tool, the Defining Issues Test, which investigates moral judgment by examining the choices an individual makes in solving a series of moral dilemmas. Each subject obtained a Principled Morality Score which was interpreted as the relative importance attributed to principled moral considerations in making moral decisions. Participants for the study from intercollegiate athletics were from women's basketball and softball teams, and men's intercollegiate soccer and …

Gender Construction In Prime-Time Sitcoms: "Roseanne" And "Murphy Brown", Claudia Crowley Collins Jan 1990

Gender Construction In Prime-Time Sitcoms: "Roseanne" And "Murphy Brown", Claudia Crowley Collins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Gender Construction in Prime-Time Sitcoms: Roseanne and Murphy Brown analyzes gender portrayal in the highest rated situation comedies on network television in the United States in 1992. The research is constructed to examine whether gender, as presented in Roseanne and Murphy Brown, continues to be based on confining stereotypes or if female characters are being portrayed in an increasingly egalitarian manner. Findings from previous decades of media research on gender portrayal in network television are used as a standard for compariSon Variations in gender portrayal because of social class differences are also examined; The main research methodology employed is content …
