Worksite Schools: A Study Of Cooperation Between Public Education And Private Business, D. Janell Dietz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The development of business/educational partnerships in the United States has accelerated in the last few years, fueled in large part by industry concerns over a projected scarcity of future workers who are effectively equipped for the demands of a workforce in an evolving technological environment. This has been accompanied by rising concern over parental choice in the matter of what schools their children will attend; Lankard (1995) has opined that in the new economy where school and work are intertwined, it is increasingly apparent that a dual approach to public school reform has appeal, and such partnerships will continue to …

Financial Aid And Completion Rates At Diverse Public, Four-Year, Higher Education Institutions, Sandra Gayle Nadelson Jan 2008

Financial Aid And Completion Rates At Diverse Public, Four-Year, Higher Education Institutions, Sandra Gayle Nadelson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The main purpose of student financial aid is to improve student success. Success can be defined as improving students' access to higher education, increasing institutional choices, and increasing graduation rates (Davis, 2001). Research has focused on financial aid and student success. Financial aid has been associated with improving access for low income and minority students (Heller, 2005). However, research has not proven that all types of financial aid are effective in increasing choice and the graduation rates of these groups of students (Kerkvliet & Nowell, 2005; Kim, 2004); Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine if financial aid …

Gabriel Bouquier: Revolutionary Education At The Height Of Sans-Culottes Power, Jonathan Douglas Deverse Jan 2007

Gabriel Bouquier: Revolutionary Education At The Height Of Sans-Culottes Power, Jonathan Douglas Deverse

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The central purpose of this thesis is to use Gabriel Bouquier and Michel Lepeletier as a means to investigate the greater educational debate in the radical republic of the French Revolution. I use the oppositional definition of public education in the writing of Bouquier and Lepeletier as a window into the character of Jacobinism as the height of the radical republic. Through this exploration, I revise the historiography on Bouquier by viewing him as an example of sans-culotte influence instead of a compromise with the liberal elements in the National Convention. Consequently, I revise the historiography of Lepeletier by interpreting …

Using Cluster Analysis To Evaluate The Academic Performance Of Demographic Homogeneous Subsets, Jeffrey N Halsell Jan 2007

Using Cluster Analysis To Evaluate The Academic Performance Of Demographic Homogeneous Subsets, Jeffrey N Halsell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requires states to develop, under very specific conditions, a valid and reliable system of measurement that meets certain requirements while neglecting others. One such provision is a system of assessments that holds all schools to the same academic criteria, regardless of circumstance, while at the same time acknowledging an achievement gap exists between certain subpopulations of students. Nevada has developed such a program, which effectively fulfills the requirements of NCLB, and like NCLB, neglects to recognize the unique challenges for those schools housing larger than average populations of lower-performing students; Historically, when discussing the achievement …

Evaluating The Effect Of Merit Aid As A Higher Education *Policy Tool Using Time Series Analysis, Michelle Johanna Nilson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since 1991, seventeen states have dramatically altered the criteria they use to distribute student financial aid to include a larger proportion of merit-based awards. Across these states, the amounts and lengths of the awards vary. There are states, such as Georgia and Florida, which provide full tuition and fees for four or five years, depending on the program of study. In sharp contrast, Michigan's Merit Award Scholarship is a one time {dollar}2,500 award. States also differ in terms of the selection criteria used to award merit aid a quasi-experimental interrupted and pooled time series design derived from research on public …

Nontraditional Aged Undergraduates In Higher Education: A Qualitative Study Of Decisions And Satisfaction, John Howard Gilbert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nontraditional aged undergraduates, those aged 25 or older, now comprise nearly 40% of the higher education population, and are more heavily represented on some campuses, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (2002). This demographic shift has not been reflected in current research, with most higher education studies focused on the traditional aged 18 to 24 college cohort. The older undergraduate population is included in some studies for comparative purposes, or they are subject of limited, outcome centered, studies. This study takes an in-depth approach to this population, focusing on the educational decision-making process and several aspects of satisfaction …

An Analysis Of Social Skills Instruction Provided In Teacher Education And In-Service Training Programs For General And Special Educators, Nicole Dobbins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The effective demonstration of social skills in classroom and personal settings is essential to successfully develop and sustain professional and personal relationships. Students with disabilities often exhibit social skills deficits which, in turn, place them at risk to experience school failure, peer rejection, and/or mental health problems (Elksnin & Elksnin, 2006). There is an increasing number of students with disabilities receiving instruction in the general education classroom setting (U.S. Department of Education, 2003). Direct instruction of social skills is imperative to ensure the academic and personal success of students; The research supports the direct instruction of discrete social skills behaviors …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Societal Factors In Teacher Education During The 1980s, Suzanne Michele Katz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Over the past 150 years teacher education has continually been accepted as a necessity for those charged with instructing the young, especially when paired with the common school movement. If all school-aged children were to be in classrooms it followed that teachers trained in educating students needed to be available. As school populations exploded from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s, most communities called for teachers in increasing numbers. Such is an example of the link between societal factors and the education of teachers. The political, historic, and societal foundations on which the practice of teacher education is grounded …
