Relationships between the groundwaters of the Nevada Test Site, Ash Meadows, Pahranagat, and Death Valley have been studied by many people over many years. Using hydrogeochemical data from these areas (sampled and analyzed by the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies) hydrologic subbasins were classified on the basis of trace element concentrations and compare these to previous classification systems. In addition, previously suggested flow relationships were examined on the basis of trace element concentrations, in particular those elements which are thought to behave conservatively in oxidizing environments. The chemical synthesis of aniline based palladium materials was achieved by the use of the chemical oxidants, PdCl4 2- and PdCl62-. Complex formation was favored by using aniline and polymer formation was favored by the use of n-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (NPPD). All materials were prepared with or without acid. Also, Characterization techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy were used; Hydrogen sorption studies were carried out using a GC/Hydrogen Generator. Motion Estimation in MPEG (Motion Pictures Experts Group) video is a temporal prediction technique. The basic principle of motion estimation is that in most cases, consecutive video frames will be similar except for changes induced by objects moving within the frames. Motion Estimation performs a comprehensive 2-dimensional spatial search for each luminance macroblock (16x16 pixel block). MPEG does not define how this search should be performed. The objective of this study is to develop a safety analysis system that integrates crash data and roadway related information. This system is developed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. It includes customized user interfaces to support queries to analyze data and to display results either in graphical or tabular formats. Perfectionistic thinking, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors can have negative influences on mental and physical health. Overly rigid and self-critical perfectionistic thinking also complicates treatment for people seeking to alleviate mental health and medical concerns. Several researchers have offered suggestions for treating perfectionism, but no empirical treatment studies with follow-up results have been published. Only DiBartolo, Frost, Dixon, and Almodovar (2001) conducted a brief manipulation of public speaking fears related to concern over mistakes and employed a control group. The F98 rat glioma cell line, a model for human malignant glioma, was used to investigate the efficacy of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) under varying light irradiation conditions. Cells in monolayer were pre-incubated in ALA for 4 hours prior to 635 nm light exposure. Using clonogenic survival assays, it was found that F98 glioma cells were sensitive to ALA-PDT: survival was inversely proportional to light fluence. As evidenced from the LD50 (4 J cm-2 at a fluence rate of 35 mW cm-2), ALA-PDT was found to be more effective in F98 cells compared to that found in another …

This dissertation is focused on studying the atomic and electronic structure of carbon-based materials, namely highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT), and C60 fullerenes, with and without metal (Ti and Li) deposition. Structured Query Language (SQL) of relational database model does not have the expressive power to implement recursive queries. Consequently, recursive queries are implemented as an application program in the host language. The newly developed XML schema provides a different setting for database design and query implementation; In this thesis, we design and implement an XML schema and a set of associated queries for a bibliographic database. We will investigate and demonstrate the shortcomings of both Xpath and Xquery as standard query languages for XML-based databases. We then show an efficient implementation of the recursive queries in XSLT programming language.

Web applications have rapidly gained importance in many businesses. The increased usage of web applications has created a challenging need for efficient and effective web application testing strategies. This thesis examines one aspect of web testing, that of test suite prioritization. We examine new test suite prioritization strategies that may improve the rate of fault detection for user-session based test suites. These techniques consider test-lengths and systematic coverage of parameter-values and their interactions. This study sought to understand prior experiences that defined pre-service teachers' reading perceptions and to understand how response-based explorations in a children's literature course informed and influenced their existing perceptions of reaDing This study employed a qualitative methodology and was framed by reader response, teacher knowledge and preparation literature, and a socio-constructivist perspective. Automatic video analysis tools have dramatically increased in importance as the Internet video revolution has blossomed. This thesis presents an approach for automatic comparison of videos based on the inherent content. Also, an approach for creating groups (or clusters) of similar videos from a large video database is given; First, methods simplifying and summarizing the content of videos will be presented. Such methods include shot boundary detection and key frame feature extraction; Next, a comparison of different distance measures between videos will be given. These distance measures will be used to construct video clusters, and results will be compared.

An interesting extension of advanced time-series analysis techniques is introduced into the domain of volcanological data exploration. A new and innovative use of the well-known ARIMA method for modeling the recurrence rate of volcanism ranging from simple Poissonian volcanoes to those showing cyclic trends is presented. Specifically, we propose a new tool to fingerprint the eruptive behavior of a volcano, which also links some modeling tools of two of the most developed areas in the literature of statistics: stochastic processes and time series. This study examined empirical information on building the destination brand model through a scale purification process, ensuring its reliability and validity. The latest movement in trying to combat the U.S. crime problem is through "faith-based" corrections. These programs are in the infancy stages and minimal data are present at this time to illustrate true effectiveness of such programs. This study is a theoretical evaluation of such programs and incorporates a framework from Gary LaFree (1988). Results indicate that "faith-based" programs tend to be one dimensional and in order for them to work properly they must be set up in conjunction with other institutional changes.
