Mathematical Modeling, Trajectory And Vibrations Control Of A Three Link Flexible Robot, Satish Jupudi Jan 1992

Mathematical Modeling, Trajectory And Vibrations Control Of A Three Link Flexible Robot, Satish Jupudi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to study the dynamics and control of a three link flexible robot. The Lagrange equations are used for deriving the equations of motion of this three link flexible robot. The equations of motion of this robot are derived by using a mathematical and symbolic manipulation software known as MACSYMA. The vibration mode shapes are approximated by using assumed mode method. A PID 'proportional, integral and differential' controller is used in this system to control the input torques to obtain desired joint angles trajectory. Linear stabilizers are introduced to suppress the vibrations of the links …

Determinants Of Salary In Nonprofit Organizations: A Study Of Executive Compensation In Symphony Orchestras, Michael David Moss Jan 1992

Determinants Of Salary In Nonprofit Organizations: A Study Of Executive Compensation In Symphony Orchestras, Michael David Moss

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents the development of a demand equation for symphony orchestras and a three equation, simultaneous model examining factors which influence nonprofit executive compensation. Results from the demand equation demonstrate that nonprofit orchestras operate in the inelastic portion of the demand curve. Thus, ticket sales generate negative marginal revenues and attendance is increased at the expense of profit. If total revenue is less than total cost, the orchestra must be subsidized by contributions from private and public sectors. The compensation model indicates that salary is positively correlated with the ability to increase contributions and improve organizational quality. Therefore, administrators …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Anxiety And Social Support Systems, Nancy Knight Miller Jan 1992

A Study Of The Relationship Between Anxiety And Social Support Systems, Nancy Knight Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study was designed to investigate the relationship between anxiety and social support systems. University students (N = 145) were given two questionnaires. On the first questionnaire the students were required to respond to questions assessing their anxiety levels. On the second questionnaire the students were required to respond to questions assessing the levels of social support which they may have or perceive that they can access if and when they need it. A descriptive analysis of the data was made and significant negative correlation was found to exist between levels of social support and anxiety. Thus, it is important …

Incestuous Wharton: A Consideration Of The Theme, Laura Kathleen Mcbride Jan 1992

Incestuous Wharton: A Consideration Of The Theme, Laura Kathleen Mcbride

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nineteenth century anthropologists had identified the development of incest taboos as the dividing line between savage and civilized human beings. Sigmund Freud expanded on these early anthropological notions of incest in identifying incestuous desire at the heart of human sexuality; In The Reef and Summer, Wharton toys with these scientific ideas about incest; the radically different way that Summer incorporates incestuous tension echoes Freud's more complex assumptions. In The Reef, Anna Leath upholds social order by rejecting her own sexuality. In refusing to marry Darrow, she takes a stand against the destabilizing forces of incestuous longing but loses her own …

Spectral Analysis Of Random Number Generators, Christy Juinsuk Olsen Jan 1992

Spectral Analysis Of Random Number Generators, Christy Juinsuk Olsen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper is based on the theory developed by Dr. Evangelos Yfantis, professor of Computer Science at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In this paper, we describe a method for testing the fairness of pseudorandom number generators using the Discrete Fourier Transform. We will show how the concept of a random process can be used in a representation for random discrete time signals. Using this concept, we have focused on the mathematical representations of the spectral analysis of a fair pseudorandom number generator. From this representation, a reasonable "spectral" expectation is determined. An algorithm which applies the developed method is …

The Japanese-American Dilemma: A Comparison Of Their Relationship Within George Modelski's Theoretical Framework Of Long Cycles, Valerie Jean Pelton Jan 1992

The Japanese-American Dilemma: A Comparison Of Their Relationship Within George Modelski's Theoretical Framework Of Long Cycles, Valerie Jean Pelton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to address the nature of Japanese-American bilateral relations in the twentieth century. An adaptation of George Modelski's theory of global long cycles is the tool used to analyze the relationship. This adaptation gives a broader evaluation of the relationship and provides a basis for predicting possible economic shifts. The focus of the analysis is an exploration of whether changes occurring in the post-1980s lay the ground work for a new stage of friction similar to that of the interwar period. Specifically, the argument is that the United States is in a period of decline …

Ambrose Bierce: Between Politics And Philosophy, Jeffrey Raymond Macmillan Jan 1992

Ambrose Bierce: Between Politics And Philosophy, Jeffrey Raymond Macmillan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the political thought of Ambrose Bierce. Because of his aversion to Gilded Age politics, Bierce did not participate in the political process. As a result, his political thought must be considered from an ideological or philosophical perspective; Examination of his views suggests Bierce was a philosophical conservative much like the "father" of British conservative thought, Edmund Burke. Though many political historians argue American political culture has never contained elements of British conservatism, others claim there has always existed a small strain of Burkean conservatism throughout American political history. This study supports the latter view by holding the …

Polonium-210 Radioactivity In Lake Mead Fish, Charlita G Rosal Jan 1992

Polonium-210 Radioactivity In Lake Mead Fish, Charlita G Rosal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Polonium-210, a naturally occurring radioisotope, has been found at high concentrations in marine fish. One publication reports much lower concentration (on the order of 10{dollar}\sp{-1}{dollar}) of {dollar}\sp{210}{dollar}Po in fresh-water fish compared to salt-water, although the visceral organs were not analyzed. This hypothesis was tested for its generality by analyzing various fish from Lake Mead. Studies of polonium are useful because the man-made radioactive plutonium is also a heavy metal with very similar energy of alpha particle emission during radioactive decay; This study was directed toward determining the radioactivity levels of {dollar}\sp{210}{dollar}Po in Lake Mead fish, particularly catfish, striped bass and …

This thesis analyzes the relative merits of "Automatic Guided Vehicles" (AGVs) and "Self Guided Vehicles" (SGVs) in the area of hospital foodservice; Data is derived from the bids of Apogee Robotics for their Orbiter{dollar}\sp{\rm TM}{dollar} system (AGV) and Transitions Research Corp for the HelpMate{dollar}\sp{\rm TM}{dollar} self guided robot, to Humana Hospital Sunrise. The major difference between the two systems is that the AGV can carry a full Dietary cart with thirty trays but is limited to a pre-laid track system. Conversely HelpMate has a map of the facility programmed in its memory and can roam anywhere, but is only able …

Sampling Inner Experience In The Learning Disabled Population, Barbara Lynn Schamanek Jan 1992

Sampling Inner Experience In The Learning Disabled Population, Barbara Lynn Schamanek

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The inner experience of four learning disabled individuals and three undiagnosed individuals, ages 24 to 40 years, was investigated using the method of descriptive inner experience sampling (Hurlburt, 1990). This method requires that the subject "freeze" moments of inner experience when signaled by a randomly programmed beeping device, and write down the thoughts, feelings, images and/or other inner experiences occurring at that precise moment. Within 24 hours, the subject met with the experimenter and discussed in detail each sampled moment. The experimenter then prepared descriptions of each sampled moment, which were examined for salient characteristics which emerged from these descriptions. …

Dating Of Fallout In Lacustrine Sediment In Southwestern Utah, Alex Clark Tikanen Jan 1992

Dating Of Fallout In Lacustrine Sediment In Southwestern Utah, Alex Clark Tikanen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Sandy Cove is located in an area of southwestern Utah which received the highest fallout from Nevada Test Site (NTS) nuclear testing during the period 1951-1959. The reservoir was shown to have a constant sedimentation rate and to be relatively undisturbed. A 40 centimeter (cm) core taken from this reservoir contained sediment deposited after 1974 and did not reach back to the NTS fallout years of 1951 to 1959 or back to the peak worldwide fallout years of 1962-1963. The amounts of cesium-137 (Cs-137) and plutonium-239,240 (Pu-239,240) which were found in a 1974-1979 dated Sandy Cove core section were almost …

A Comparative Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains From Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, And Kayenta Anasazi Archaeological Sites, Heidi Roberts

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Human skeletal remains from the prehistoric Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, and Kayenta Anasazi cultural traditions are examined, to quantify differences in skeletal parameters and burial practices. Statistical comparisons show no significant differences in skeletal metric traits among the 125 individuals studied; While most individuals examined were healthy, the prevalence of periostitis, osteitis, and linear enamel hypoplasia was found to be highest among Virgin Anasazi individuals. Two other pathologies, porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia, were most common among the Kayenta sample and least among the Parowan Fremont sample; From literature review and new data, much variability was found in mortuary practices. …

High Current Coaxial Ion Beam/Laser Beam Spectrometer, Qiang Tu Jan 1992

High Current Coaxial Ion Beam/Laser Beam Spectrometer, Qiang Tu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The construction and operation of a new apparatus for making spectroscopic investigations of molecular ions is described. In the new ion beam machine, the ion beam and laser beam overlap in a coaxial geometry. The machine has much higher ion current than an apparatus previous used. The laser beam induces transitions between internal states of the molecular ion. The transitions are detected by allowing the ion beam to collide with background gas and detecting the surviving ion beam current. Because the cross-section depends on the internal state of the ion, the surviving ion beam current will change when the laser …

Storm-Dominated Lower Cambrian Depositional Environments In The Ravenswood Area, Lander County, Nevada, Readin Isaac Wilson Jan 1992

Storm-Dominated Lower Cambrian Depositional Environments In The Ravenswood Area, Lander County, Nevada, Readin Isaac Wilson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A Lower Cambrian sedimentary sequence 40 meters thick is exposed in the Ravenswood area, Lander County, Nevada. This sequence is divided into 7 lithofacies which are interpreted to represent marine, littoral to sublittoral environments including offshore bars, sheet deposits (proximal, intermediate, distal), patch reefs, and storm-surge ebb channels; The lithology, paleontology, and sedimentary structures reflect deposition in a wave-dominated or storm-dominated system. Paleocurrent indicators suggest that strong westerly (present orientation of continent) winds created landward-directed currents transporting carbonate debris from the shelf to nearshore environments. Subsequently, storm-surge-ebb flows transported nearshore sediments seaward; The lithofacies presented herein indicate that sediments were …

Models For Estimating Compensation For College Graduates Entering Careers In Business, Charles F Barr Jan 1992

Models For Estimating Compensation For College Graduates Entering Careers In Business, Charles F Barr

Is Family Environment A Mediator Of Bulimia And Child Sexual Abuse?, Teresa Lynn Hastings Jan 1992

Is Family Environment A Mediator Of Bulimia And Child Sexual Abuse?, Teresa Lynn Hastings

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Reports concerning the high rate of child sexual abuse in bulimic populations have not generally been supported by empirical investigations. The current study addressed methodological problems that may have accounted for insignificant results, and investigated family environment as a possible mediator of the relationship. Results indicate a significant correlation between bulimia and child sexual abuse within a sample of college women (n = 786). Furthermore, both women with bulimia and victims of child sexual abuse reported families that were low in cohesion and independence, and higher in conflict and control. Family environment did not significantly mediate or moderate the relationship …
