Hydrology Of Bishop Creek, Inyo County, California: An Isotopic Analysis, Michael Louis Space Jan 1988

Hydrology Of Bishop Creek, Inyo County, California: An Isotopic Analysis, Michael Louis Space

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Bishop Creek, located in east-central California on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada supports fauna and flora that otherwise could not exist. There are approximately 3000 meters of relief in the Bishop Creek watershed. The headwaters of the creek originate from three man-made lakes, situated at 2790 to 2975 meters above sea level. During its course, diverted water from Bishop Creek flows through a series of five hydroelectric power plants, resulting in streamflow that is less than that expected under natural conditions much of the year. Stream diversion for hydroelectric power production may have adverse effects on the riparian …

Morphology And Development Of The Red Rock Canyon Alluvial Fan, Clark County, Nevada, Cheryl Mcdonnell-Canan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Changes in morphology and pedogenic carbonate accumulation establish relative ages of a chronosequence of calcic soils and pedogenic calcretes that underlie four surfaces identified on the Red Rock Canyon alluvial fan. All surfaces identified are formed of limestone alluvium, occur at elevations of 853 m, and share the same climate and vegetation. These surfaces were mapped and delimited by color, texture, dissection, and soil development and were ranked in relative age by elevation and topographic position; Because of difficulty in measuring pedogenic carbonate in soils derived from calcareous alluvium, a technique employing macroscopic and microscopic visual determinations, combined with Chittick …

Brothels In The Marketplace Of Ideas: Toward A Heuristic Definition Of Commercial Speech, Marc S. Charisse Jan 1988

Brothels In The Marketplace Of Ideas: Toward A Heuristic Definition Of Commercial Speech, Marc S. Charisse

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nevada's legal brothels offer a unique opportunity to study the problem of defining commercial speech. Although state law forbids advertisements of houses of prostitution in counties where brothels themselves are against law, brothel messages are abundant in Clark County, where any form of prostitution is illegal. The publishers of these messages claim they are constitutionally protected editorial speech rather than advertisements which enjoy little or no First Amendment protection, thus confounding the efforts of prosecutors who say they would otherwise move to remove such messages from public display; The thesis examines the development of the U.S. Supreme Court's commercial speech …

Sedimentological Constraints On Middle Miocene Extensional Tectonism Of The Southern Las Vegas Range, Southern Nevada, Jack Edward Deibert Jan 1988

Sedimentological Constraints On Middle Miocene Extensional Tectonism Of The Southern Las Vegas Range, Southern Nevada, Jack Edward Deibert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A depositional-tectonic model is proposed for the reconstruction of a Miocene lacustrine basin in the southern Las Vegas Range, Nevada, that was fragmented during a period of extensional tectonism. The model suggests that the sediments were deposited in an isolated basin during initiation of normal faulting in the Sheep Range extensional allochthon 12 to 16 Ma. After 12 Ma, deposition in this basin was terminated by normal faulting followed by oroflexural rotation along the Las Vegas Valley shear zone; The unique Middle Miocene sequence is 335-m-thick and consists of interbedded nonmarine limestone, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate, megabreccia, and volcanic ash. The …

The findings of this investigation support earlier contentions of the importance of focusing on sex-role attitude …

Late Holocene Earthflows Of The Willard Playa/Dune Complex, Estancia Valley, New Mexico; A Geomorphic Response To Climatic Change, Kurt A Goebel Jan 1988

Late Holocene Earthflows Of The Willard Playa/Dune Complex, Estancia Valley, New Mexico; A Geomorphic Response To Climatic Change, Kurt A Goebel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Late-middle to late Holocene dune sediment that overlies Pleistocene lacustrine sediment marks the onset of xeric conditions in the Estancia Valley, central New Mexico. Incised into the underlying lacustrine sediments, the modern deflation basins are enclosed by parabolic dunes composed of clay and gypsum derived from the underlying sediment; Located on the in-facing duneslopes of the deflation basins, the most striking geomorphic feature of this dune complex are numerous elongated scars. These relict scars document a geomorphically distinct earthflow event. Arroyos that cut into flow scars expose eolian earthflow sediment overlying lacustrine deposits. In the zone of depletion, erosional-flow evidence …

Measurement Of The Nitrogen(+) ((5)Sulfide) State Radiative Lifetime, Jianzhong Jiang Jan 1988

Measurement Of The Nitrogen(+) ((5)Sulfide) State Radiative Lifetime, Jianzhong Jiang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The radiative lifetime of metastable N{dollar}\sp{+}{dollar}(2s2p{dollar}\sp3{dollar} {dollar}\sp5{dollar}S{dollar}\sb2{dollar}) has been measured by directly monitoring the spontaneous emission from stored N{dollar}\sp{+}{dollar} in a radio-frequency ion trap. The electron excitation technique was used to create N{dollar}\sp{+}{dollar}({dollar}\sp5{dollar}S{dollar}\sb2{dollar}), and the spontaneous emission decay curve via spin-forbidden electric dipole transitions from 2s2p{dollar}\sp3{dollar} {dollar}\sp5{dollar}S{dollar}\sb2{dollar} to 2s{dollar}\sp2{dollar}2p{dollar}\sp2{dollar} {dollar}\sp3{dollar}P{dollar}\sb{1,2}{dollar} ground state at 2139.68 and 2143.55 A were observed. A measured value for the {dollar}\sp5{dollar}S{dollar}\sb2{dollar} radiative lifetime is {dollar}\tau\sb{\rm rad}{dollar} = 6.4 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.7 ms which is in good agreement with the theoretical result by Hibbert and Bates but longer than the measurement by Knight (4.2 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.6 ms). A …

The Effects Of A Twelve Week Exercise Program On Fitness Levels And Blood Glucose Of Type Ii Diabetics And Overweight Individuals, Susan Darlene Iverson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study compared body composition, cardiovascular capacity, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, and blood glucose of type II diabetics to overweight, nondiabetics participating in a 12 week endurance training program. Five type II diabetics, ages 52 to 67, were compared to eight overweight nondiabetics, ages 18 to 66. The "Y's Way to Physical Fitness" battery of tests was used throughout (Golding et al., 1982). Blood glucose was measured with a portable meter using a finger prick and sterile, disposable lancet. Using a correlated t-test (p {dollar}<{dollar}.005), the following variables were analyzed to determine if there were significant differences in fitness after training: weight, percent body fat, resting heart rate, flexibility, one-minute recovery heart rate, bench press, situps, VO2 max, and PWC max. A univariate F-test was used in a one-way analysis of variance (p {dollar}<{dollar}.05) to compare mean individual group differences on fitness measures after training. Braided Stream Deposition And Provenance Of The Late Cretaceous-Paleocene(?) Canaan Peak Formation, Table Cliff And Kaiparowits Plateaus, Southwestern Utah, David Allen Jones

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Late Cretaceous to Paleocene(?) Canaan Peak Formation of southwestern Utah is comprised of approximately 100 m of cobble conglomerate and subordinate sandstone. Gravel deposition occurred during high-discharge periods within a Scott-type, perennial, braided fluvial system as longitudinal (Gm) and sinuous-crested transverse (Gt) bars, and as a product of longitudinal bar-top and inter-bar channel scour filling (Gt). Sand accumulated under lower flow velocity conditions through migration of inter-bar channel dunes and transverse bars (St/Sp) and development of scour-and-fill deposits (Ss). Siltstone (Fm) deposition resulted from vertical accretion on bar tops during waning flow conditions; Clast imbrication and trough axis orientation …
