Turkish Journal of Zoology

Present work deals with providing an identification key to 60 Iranian species of the family Isotomidae. The photographic support provided here, both light micrographs and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures, can be used as a practical tool for researchers who are not well acquainted with the morphology of Isotomidae.

Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, 1855 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) which develops inside the grain, is an aggressive pest of stored grains. Here, we evaluated the efficiency of diatomaceous earth (DE), Diatomita CI/325 CX, and dolomite (DOL), Dolomita Dr. Kanyo, against S. zeamais reared on corn under laboratory conditions and observed external alterations on treated insects using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Insects treated with both DE and DOL were impregnated with particles on the body surface, and they showed 100% mortality after 10 days of exposure. Damages caused by inert dusts may have contributed to dehydration and desiccation, consequently, leading insects to death. Thus, …

Morphological characteristics of the resting egg, which is important to ensure the continuity of generations, were examined to understand if there were morphologically significant differences among 3 cladoceran species. Resting eggs floating on the water surface were collected by a plankton net with a mesh size of 100 \mum from Mamasın Dam Lake in November 2012 and were left to dry at room temperature in the laboratory. The Gill Morphology Of The Date Mussel Lithophaga Lithophaga (Bivalvia: Mytilidae), Deni̇z Akşi̇t, Beri̇a Falakali Mutaf

The purpose of the present research was to study the descriptive anatomy of the gill of the mussel Lithophaga lithophaga. Mussels were collected from 2 sites in Antalya Bay, Turkey. Observations using stereomicroscopy and electron microscopy showed that the gills of L. lithophaga consist of homorhabdic filaments, a characteristic of the mytilids. The lamellae have cavities at their laterals in addition to their prominent ciliary structure on the frontal and lateral surfaces. Freshwater oligochaetes are studied worldwide because of their relevance as bioindicators in aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, species identification is still difficult because it is mainly based on the male reproductive system. The morphology of the chaetae offers an additional set of characters and the fine organization of these elements can help in solving crucial aspects allowing specific attribution. In spite of this, somatic chaetae are poorly investigated under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The aim of this investigation was the morphological study of Craspedorrhynchus platystomus (Burmeister, 1838) by light microscope as well as by scanning electron microscope. The lice specimens were collected from long-legged buzzards, Buteo rufinus (Cretzschmar) (Accipitridae), in Turkey.

The Discovery Of Neoechinorhynchus Zabensis (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae) From Cyprinid Fishes In Turkey And Iran, With Special Reference To New Morphological Features Revealed By Scanning Electron Microscopy, Mehmet Cemal Oğuz, Omar Mohamed Amin, Richard Anderson Heckmann, Yahya Tepe, Gholamali Johargholizadeh, Burçak Aslan, Masoumeh Malek

Neoechinorhynchus zabensis Amin, Abdullah, and Mhaisen, 2003 was described from Capoeta damascina (Valenciennes, 1842) and Capoeta trutta (Heckel, 1843) in the Greater and Lesser Zab rivers of northern Iraq. It is reported here from C. trutta in the Dez River, Iran, and from Capoeta barroisi Lortet, 1894 (new host record) in the Murat River, Turkey (both are new locality records). Neoechinorhynchus zabensis appears to be restricted to the Tigris-Euphrates basin in Iraq, Turkey, and Iran, where it infects native fishes of the genus Capoeta Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1842 (Cyprinidae).
