Stress, Social Support And Parental Behavior, Mila M. Buset Jan 1989

Stress, Social Support And Parental Behavior, Mila M. Buset

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The present study investigated the relationship between stress, social support and parenting behavior. Eighty-six mothers who had a child enrolled in a daycare center in the Kitchener-Waterloo region volunteered for this study. Participants completed four questionnaires: A Demographic Sheet, the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein, 1983), the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (Cohen and Hoberman, 1983), and the Parent Behavior Scale (which was specifically constructed for this study). The overall support scale and the four subscales (tangible, belonging, appraisal, and self-esteem support) were used to determine whether the perceived availability of social support is directly related to parenting behavior …

Feminist Ritual Healing, Transformation And Empowerment, Eileen R. Ormond Jan 1989

Feminist Ritual Healing, Transformation And Empowerment, Eileen R. Ormond

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A number of contemporary Western feminists are re-defining their spiritual beliefs and creating ritual practices to reinforce feminine values in their lives. Advocates of feminist spirituality believe that the personal and spiritual dimensions of women’s lives are interrelated. The experience of transcendence and unity is often preceded by personal healing and empowerment for many women. The creation of alternative women’s rituals, a dynamic force in contemporary feminism, is well illustrated in the world of Diane Mariechild. One purpose of this work is to interpret Mariechild’s rituals from a feminist and psychological perspective and to suggest that feminist ritual may function …

The first section of the thesis provides an overview of regulation in western nations. sets out the philosophical case for restrictions on sexually explicit materials from the conservative, liberal, feminist and Christian perspectives and explains the purpose of the study. A …

The Refugee Filtering Process And Host Country Resettlement Issues In Canada: A Critical Theoretical Analysis, R. Gary Edwards Jan 1989

The Refugee Filtering Process And Host Country Resettlement Issues In Canada: A Critical Theoretical Analysis, R. Gary Edwards

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In the present study, an attempt is made to integrate the diverse literature pertaining to host country resettlement and refugee mental health in Canada. A historical perspective is provided, reviewing the checkered Canadian responses to international refugee movements and the various influences on the humanitarian aims of refugee policy. A model is then developed, drawing on the literature of multiple academic disciplines. The models constitutes a critical generative theory whereby the resettlement issues of assimilationism, racial prejudice, employment difficulties, and domestic political pressures are respectively linked to the filtering processes of ideology, race, economics, and international diplomacy. A test of …

University Growth-Poles And The Canadian Aggregate Situation, Stephen Paul Meyer Jan 1989

University Growth-Poles And The Canadian Aggregate Situation, Stephen Paul Meyer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The utilization of higher education resources in a regional development function has become an increasingly popular ploy within the realm of government policy. The university, typically through an interaction with today’s growth-inciting high-technology industry, has tended to replace the traditionally-used manufacturing plant as the ‘new’ growth-pole. It is likely that no other single institution could benefit a region in as wide an array of economic and social capacities as can the university. And, it is with respect to this notion that a Canadian university study was pursued. However, where most university ‘impact-type’ assessments have tended to look at individual cases, …

Some Hydrologic Aspects Of Snowmelt Runoff Under Summer Conditions, In The Barpu Glacier Basin, Central Karakoram, Himalaya, Northern Pakistan, Ali Ghazanfar

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Snow and ice in high mountains represent and important water resource in many parts of the world, especially the dry continental interior of Central Asia. In the Northern Areas of Pakistan, mountain ranges are the primary sources of annually renewed water supplies. They give rise to rivers which are the only significant, sustainable source of fresh water. The Indus basin is drained by the river Indus and its major tributaries, the Kabul, Jhelum, Chanab, Ravi and Sutlej. Snowmelt contributes about 70 percent to the annual flow of these rivers, but is not timed to meet the requirements for crop production, …

The Arguments Of The Apocriticus A Re-Evaluation Of The Apology Of Macarius Magnes, Benedict C. Sheehy Jan 1989

The Arguments Of The Apocriticus A Re-Evaluation Of The Apology Of Macarius Magnes, Benedict C. Sheehy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Since its rediscovery in the last century, the Apocriticus of Macarius Magnes has been dismissed as a worthless apology. Scholars generally agreed that the value of the work was not in the Christian apology, but rather in the pagan point of view it preserves. This thesis is an analysis of the arguments from a historico-cultural perspective, particularly from the perspectives of rhetorical argument, allegorical interpretation, and Christian theology. The thesis then attempts to demonstrate that when understood in its proper historical context the apology is a substantial contribution to the Christian apologetic tradition and vehicle to understanding the Christian—pagan conflict …

The Perception Of Refuse In West African Cities The Case Of Techiman, Ghana, Joseph Mensah Jan 1989

The Perception Of Refuse In West African Cities The Case Of Techiman, Ghana, Joseph Mensah

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The refuse problem in most West African cities has attained such a massive proportion that even the most insensitive city dweller cannot overlook it. Of the very few studies undertaken on the issue most emphasize the distribution, the magnitude and the economic effects of refuse on the urban environment. Although evidence suggests that culture is the filter through which different environments are held significant by the people, little has been documented on the attitudes and perceptions of West African people in relation to the quality of their environment. The present study analyses the public perception of refuse and how this …

Assessing Socially Skilled Behaviour For Vocational Tenure In Adults With Developmental Disability, Paula M. Daoust Jan 1989

Assessing Socially Skilled Behaviour For Vocational Tenure In Adults With Developmental Disability, Paula M. Daoust

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Socially skilled behaviour is a critical factor in an individual's ability to secure and maintain employment. Due to the very nature of their handicap, persons with mental retardation often exhibit social skills deficits, thus restricting access to competitive employment and the status of full membership in society that such employment facilitates. Previous attempts to train socially skilled behaviour in persons with mental retardation have been hampered by the lack of a valid assessment tool to evaluate program effectiveness and inform program content. The purpose of this paper was to develop such an instrument by extending work done by Lagreca, Stone …

Training Parents Use Of The Zpd And The Acquisition Of Story-Telling Skills In Children, Susan L. Robins Jan 1989

Training Parents Use Of The Zpd And The Acquisition Of Story-Telling Skills In Children, Susan L. Robins

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Research has demonstrated that tutorial use of Vygotsky‘s Zone of Proximal Development during dyadic problem-solving enhances the subsequent, independent performance of the learner. It has also been demonstrated that use of the ZPD can be increased through tutorial use of the contingent pattern of intervention identified by Wood and Middleton (1978). The present study was designed to develop and evaluate one procedure for training mothers to use the contingent pattern of intervention during a dyadic story re-telling task. It was hypothesized that an increase in maternal use of the contingent pattern would result in increased use of the children's ZPD, …

The Home-School Interface Parental And Teacher Beliefs About Homework From A Multicultural Perspective, Tania Sebastian Jan 1989

The Home-School Interface Parental And Teacher Beliefs About Homework From A Multicultural Perspective, Tania Sebastian

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The present exploratory study investigated the beliefs and practices of parents of various cultural groups, as well as teachers, regarding educational issues. The central focus was upon homework, the day to day link between school and home. A main objective of the research was to determine how individual and subcultural variations in parenting style (Baumrind, 1973) are linked with attitudes and practices towards the school. Interviews were conducted with 36 parents of 7th and 8th graders in three different ethnic groups, drawn from an urban junior high school in Toronto. There were equal numbers of sons and daughters in each …

An Experimental Evaluation Of Four Tutoring Strategies Implications For Instruction, Affect, And Transfer Of Training, Katherine Marie Savoy Jan 1989

An Experimental Evaluation Of Four Tutoring Strategies Implications For Instruction, Affect, And Transfer Of Training, Katherine Marie Savoy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In the present study, the type of instruction to which children were exposed was manipulated in an attempt to determine the tutoring effectiveness, affective consequences, and impact on generalization of tutoring patterns based on Vygotsky’s (1934/1978) and Wood’s (1980) concept of the "region of sensitivity to instruction." Participants were forty fourth and fifth grade children from the Waterloo Separate School Board. Each child was randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions, or to a no-training control, and individually tutored by the experimenter on difficult long division math problems. The tutoring interventions were classified by levels of instructional support following …

The Influence Of Word Shape And Letter Case In Word Processing, Eve Atkinson Jan 1989

The Influence Of Word Shape And Letter Case In Word Processing, Eve Atkinson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The perceptual strategies used by a skilled reader have been a controversial issue and the procedures by which readers identify words have not been clearly defined (Horton. 1989; Kolers & Roediger, 1984; Masson, in press; Tardif & Craik, 1989). The role of word shape remains unclear. Rudnicky and Kolers (1984) suggested that lowercase text may be processed more fluently than uppercase print because the reader may take advantage of features such as the pattern of extensions above and below midline provided by the lowercase letters. It may be that processing of lowercase text includes the utilization of a well-practiced shape …

Drawing With And Without Models: An Examination Of Drawing Behavior In Children And Adults, Jenet Bogles Jan 1989

Drawing With And Without Models: An Examination Of Drawing Behavior In Children And Adults, Jenet Bogles

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Research in drawing development has indicated that individuals’ drawing behavior changes with age. Preschoolers, six, nine, twelve year-olds, and adults participated in the present study since these ages corresponded to the most prominent stages noted in the literature. Part one of this study examined drawing behavior in three drawing conditions: a model-absent condition (C1) in which drawing took place following a brief verbal description, a model briefly-present condition (C2) in which the model on which the verbal description was based was examined and drawn when removed from sight, and a model continuously present-condition (C3) in which drawings were made while …

Developing A Sense Of Community: An Assessment Of The Needs And Resources Of A Church Congregation, Heather Hair Jan 1989

Developing A Sense Of Community: An Assessment Of The Needs And Resources Of A Church Congregation, Heather Hair

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The development of a psychological sense of community within various settings has been the focus of recent interest for many community psychologists. One setting, however, tint has received minimal attention is religious organizations. In Canada, churches and synagogues are prominent institutions standing between the individual and the larger structures of society. Consequently, religious organizations can be art important cost-effective resource for prevention and health promotion programs. Through collaborative and consultative work with congregations, the community psychologist can reach important, underserved segments of the population who are reluctant to use traditional mental health services. Using the community development process congregational members …

The Politics Of Teaching Personality, Burnout, Perceptions Of Leadership Style And Teacher Control, Support And Involvement In The Classroom, Margaret-Anne Killoran Jan 1989

The Politics Of Teaching Personality, Burnout, Perceptions Of Leadership Style And Teacher Control, Support And Involvement In The Classroom, Margaret-Anne Killoran

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The distribution and dissemination of power within a school may play as much of a role in the classroom environment as the curriculum itself (Cox, 1988). The present study investigated teachers’ perceptions of their own classroom support, control and involvement with students. Predictor variables included demographic factors, personality, attitudes toward authority and perceptions of ideals for principal leadership. Level of burnout was included as an important variable connected with various background variables and outcome measures of teachers’ reports of support, control, and involvement. Of particular interest was the level of authoritarianism, conceptualized as involving high control, low support and low …

An Evaluation Of Drama Therapy As A Form Of Secondary Prevention For Children With Social Skills Deficits, Myra Kosidoy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The following study investigated the effectiveness of an intervention that was based on creative drama designed to improve the social skills of school age children identified as deficient in social-emotional development. The intervention, termed the structured fantasy approach, combines theoretical principals from psychodynamic theory, social learning theory, and creative drama. The study was conducted at a public school in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Eight students from the third to sixth grade participated in a ten-week social skills program, while seven students from first to third grade participated in a similar program. Five first to third graders and four third to six …

Assessment Of Visual/Orthographic Awareness In Beginning Readers, Hope Elizabeth Lemoine Jan 1989

Assessment Of Visual/Orthographic Awareness In Beginning Readers, Hope Elizabeth Lemoine

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Various models reading development (Frith, 1985; Gough & Hillenger, 1980; Marsh, Friedman, Welch, & Desberg, 1981) have suggested that word shape is of critical important to early readers when recognizing words they know. As children progress through the early stages of reading, critical features such as first letter then become the important definers of word recognitions among early readers until they are at a much more advanced stage (Frith, 1985). More generally, advanced orthographic awareness among early readers is not considered to play an important role until children are older and have established a more advanced reading vocabulary. The purpose …

Development And Construct Validation Of Lane's (1989) Attitudes Toward The Elderly Scale Extending Fazio's Process Model Of Attitude-Behaviour Correspondence, Donna-Marie Martin Jan 1989

Development And Construct Validation Of Lane's (1989) Attitudes Toward The Elderly Scale Extending Fazio's Process Model Of Attitude-Behaviour Correspondence, Donna-Marie Martin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this study was twofold: to extend Fazio’s (1986) model of attitude-behaviour correspondence within the context of attitudes toward the elderly, and to further develop Lane’s (1989) Attitudes Toward the Elderly Scale (ATES) and assess its construct validity. In the first phase, 452 introductory students completed a modified version of Lane’s (1989) ATES, a measure of experience with the elderly, and Snyder’s (1974) Self-Monitoring Scale. During phase 2, six weeks later, participants evaluated a job candidate to investigate how the moderating variables of self-monitoring, salience, direct experience, and situational cues maximized or minimized attitude-behaviour correspondence. A total of …

Black Education In Canada West: A Parochial Solution To A Secular Problem. Rev. M. M. Dillon And The Colonial Church And School Society, Christopher Bruce Elliot

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

African-Americans fled the United States of America during the nineteenth century to escape slavery. The majority of the emigrants took refuge in Upper Canada. Slavery had been abolished by 1834 in all British colonial possessions. Blacks were promised protection from racism by virtue of British institutions. Upper Canada offered the fugitives a chance to begin a new life. Life in Canada West was not to be as joyful as was promised. When Blacks arrived in the British colony they were treated as outsiders, outcast from society. The prejudices of the day flourished throughout the countryside. Racism was manifested in the …

In 1937 the strike at General Motors in Oshawa resulted in the first major victory for the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in Canada. The president of the Oshawa local was Charles Millard (1896-1978), who subsequently played an influential role in most of the major developments in organized labour between 1937 and 1956. He was the first National Director of the Canadian branch of the United Steel Workers of America in 1943, a position which he retained until his retirement in 1956. Under his leadership the steelworkers’ union became a dominant force in the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL), taking …

Negativity In The Evaluations Of Political Leaders, Timothy John Stanford Utting Jan 1989

Negativity In The Evaluations Of Political Leaders, Timothy John Stanford Utting

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The perception of political leaders has been, and continues to be, a primary component in the electoral process. Researchers have presented findings which indicate that the evaluation of party leaders is an important determinant of the vote decision. Even though these findings have aided our understanding of the importance of candidate evaluations, the literature has provided very little information about the dynamics involved in the perception of political leaders. In this thesis, we are interested in the dynamics involved in the evaluation of political leaders. More specifically, our examination concerns the presence of negativity effects which have been identified by …

Sumptuary Guidelines In Clement Of Alexandria's Paedagogus And Seneca's Epistulae Morales, Stephen Crump

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis, Sumptuary Guidelines in Clement of Alexandria's Paedagogus and Seneca's Epistulae Morales, explores the similarities between the ethical outlooks of Clement of Alexandria and Seneca, as well as peculiar emphases of each writer. The thesis is introduced with a discussion of the Christian search for identity within the Roman world, and the influence of Stoicism in formulating this identity. The next two chapters provide the social and intellectual context within which Clement and Seneca respectively wrote. In establishing Clement's backdrop, the cultural, intellectual, and economic settings of Alexandria are examined. The argument is put forth that these various settings …

Judean Pithoi Of Iron Age Eretz Israel, Penny Lynn Pearson Jan 1989

Judean Pithoi Of Iron Age Eretz Israel, Penny Lynn Pearson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The excavation and analysis of pottery is an important element in the archaeology of Eretz Israel and in the development of assemblages which are representative of selected strata. The developments in ceramic research over the last century and a half have revealed that there are common characteristics among the pottery produced in a country in a single period of time. There are, however, decided differences between the pottery of various geographical regions. The character and history of the Southern Kingdom of Judah is reflective of the various geographical zones of the country through which the ubiquitous nature of ceramics provides …

Gottfried Arnold On Worship A Translation From Die Erste Liebe, 1696, Paul Wagner Jan 1989

Gottfried Arnold On Worship A Translation From Die Erste Liebe, 1696, Paul Wagner

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Generally, there has been little work done in the study of worship among Pietists. One of the most influencial Pietists was Gottfried Arnold (1666-1714) who, in his first major work Die Erste Liebe (1696), devoted a major section to this question of worship. This dissertation is intended as a contribution to the ongoing study of worship among the Pietists; as such it presents for the first time an English translation from book two of Die Erste Liebe, chapter one “Von ihrem Gebet zu Gott.” Here Arnold outlines his view of worship which he understands to have been the view of …

The Role Of Ideology In Hebrew Nation-Making, Gerald Cressman Jan 1989

The Role Of Ideology In Hebrew Nation-Making, Gerald Cressman

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The thesis examines the role and power of ideology in the formation of the Hebrew people. Ideology has been selected as a salient theme since it promises to answer various questions which yet linger concerning this early period in Israel's history. Without an appreciation of the role played by ideology, the formative phase of the Hebrew people seems to be enigmatic and largely a series of coincidental events. Although this dissertation cannot offer conclusive arguments to support the historical reconstruction proposed herein, it does put forward plausible explanations for the manner in which Hebrew nationhood began. By means of this …

A Neurophysiological Model Of Trance With Practical Application, Alexander Sasha Antony Marusich Jan 1989

A Neurophysiological Model Of Trance With Practical Application, Alexander Sasha Antony Marusich

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Certain techniques are virtually universal in the production of religious trance. Rhythmic drumming, chanting, singing and vigorous dancing, for instance, are all commonly accepted as playing significant roles in the induction of trance states. But the effectiveness of these techniques has yet to be explained fully. Contemporary neurophysiological and brain sciences can provide the basis for a more comprehensive explanation of trance induction techniques and trance states. In accounting for trance within a neurophysiological model, two questions are fundamental. What kind of neurophysiological activity typifies a trance state? And how do trance induction techniques stimulate and generate the neurophysiological dynamics …

Socialization Or Hermeneutics? The Fundamental Cause Of Conflict Over Sexual Morals In The United Church Of Canada, Derek Albert Parry

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

There is conflict in the United Church of Canada over whether to approve of homosexual sexual activity and to ordain people who engage in homosexual sex. Official and unofficial organizations within the church, seeking to reduce the conflict and resolve the issue have stated that differences in Biblical hermeneutics is the underlying problem. This paper seeks to show that differences in socialization is the fundamental group of the differences in the United Church over homosexuality. The thesis is supported by four arguments. First, by deriving arguments both for and against the approving of homosexual sex on the basis of the …
