The Utilization Of Wood As An Energy Resource In Ontario, Ronald Harvey Walder Jan 1983

The Utilization Of Wood As An Energy Resource In Ontario, Ronald Harvey Walder

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The thesis provides an introductory descriptive analysis of the utilization of wood as an energy resource in Ontario from past, present, and future perspectives. Available quantitative and spatial information was compiled and evaluated for each temporal component. Due to a number of factors including local resource supply inadequacies, resource competition, and technological change, wood energy experienced a rapid decline in utilization during the late 19th century. This decline continued steadily throughout the 20th century until world energy events during the 1970’s promoted a modest resurgence. In the domestic sector “serious” users, who consume wood for the majority of their home …

Consumer Images Of Shopping Centres A Socio-Economic Analysis, David W. Bell Jan 1983

Consumer Images Of Shopping Centres A Socio-Economic Analysis, David W. Bell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previous research has shown that behaviour by consumers is influenced by many interacting factors that motivate each individual in different ways. It is how these factors are perceived and combined by each person that leads to the formation of consumer images of shopping centres. Image is an important criterion in the comprehension of the consumer’s perception of shopping centres. Studies have found that the consumer’s image is related in a systematic way with the measures of social and economic characteristics of the consumer. Occupation and income are two variables that have often been employed by previous researchers to measure a …

Juveniles' Perceptions Of A Protective-Permissive Dichotomy In The Juvenile Justice System, Robert Paul Saltstone

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The juvenile justice system has come under increasing criticism for its traditionally paternalistic and protective posture. The literature surveyed reviews some of the major occurrences, such as the Gault decision, which have led to a new direction in legislation. It is demonstrated that while juveniles are being awarded more due process rights, they are also being held more accountable for their actions. The paternalistic versus legalistic, or protective versus permissive, dichotomy clearly emerges during the examination of the literature. It is clearly extracted and analyzed in two papers, one by Dootjes (1972) and one by Leon (1979). Leon’s is a …

Community Access In Northern Ontario The Problem Of Orphan Roads, David A. Frentress

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In northern Ontario, long distances, harsh climatic and physiographic conditions and sparse population make transportation costly and problematic. This thesis examines the problem of orphan roads. An orphan road leads to a small, unincorporated community, but it is not under any type of road maintenance agreement. Five such roads were not under agreement for the 1982-1983 winter. These roads led to Biscotasing, Hillsport, Auden, Oba and Pagwa River. With the exception of Pagwa River, a case study of each situation was carried out to gain a clearer understanding of the problem in order that recommendations could be made. major recommendations …

For four and a half years Zeelanders (hereafter referred to as Zeeuws) lived and worked under the yoke of German rule and oppression before exchanging that yoke for freedom. It was here that Canadians played a role.

On a grand scale, the Canadian Army was …

The Rib In The Book Of Job, John Maclaren Evans Jan 1983

The Rib In The Book Of Job, John Maclaren Evans

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study shows that the Book of Job can be understood as the record of a rib between Job and Yahweh, which involves ultimately the issue of the relationship of man and God. A definition of the term rib is first established by reviewing its occurrences in the other books of the Old Testament. Although it includes a wide range of contention, the term signifies essentially a legal complaint initiated by an aggrieved party, convinced of the rectitude of his position, against the party whom he holds responsible for the grievance. Ribs occur in both non-secular and secular contexts, the …

Family life education can be defined as “any activity…aimed at imparting information concerning family relationships and providing the opportunity for people to approach their present and future relationships with greater responsibility” (Vanier Institute of the Family, 1971). The purpose of the present research was to identify the needs and interests of high school students and to determine whether their needs and interests were being met in the area of family life education. The Effects Of Different Competitive Situations On The Political Content Of Daily Newspapers, Deborah Joan Stalker Jan 1983

The Effects Of Different Competitive Situations On The Political Content Of Daily Newspapers, Deborah Joan Stalker

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The value of the daily newspaper to the individuals who read it is at the core of this study. Some have felt that the newspaper has been affected for the worse by a loss in competition in many communities. Their worries often centre on the effects that the loss could have on the role of a newspaper and on its responsibilities to the public. The previous research on this topic has failed to turn up evidence of a substantial difference between monopoly and competitive newspapers. Canadian works on this subject were scant and, in light of the report of the …

The Technical, Legal And Political Implications Of Remote Sensing Satellites, Matthew Mahoney Jan 1983

The Technical, Legal And Political Implications Of Remote Sensing Satellites, Matthew Mahoney

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis examines the phenomenon of reconnaissance satellites and their role in the present arms race. While volumes of material have been written on the arms race in general, or the weapons race in particular, very little has been written on the role of satellites in this conflict and almost nothing has been written on the role of reconnaissance satellites. There is a need for much greater debate on the role of reconnaissance satellites in outer space. Reconnaissance satellites have, in part, rewritten the meaning of the arms race and they have contributed significantly to arms reductions talks between the …

A wide variety of structural remains representing military, commercial, industrial and residential developments were examined. Analysis of the archaeological and historical data has led to the compilation of an occupational profile which outlines the historic periods of occupation, the structural and artifactual …

Approaching The Scarlet Letter: Spatiality As Theme And Method, Susan L. Scott Jan 1983

Approaching The Scarlet Letter: Spatiality As Theme And Method, Susan L. Scott

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Although my goal is ultimately to undersatnd Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, the emphasis of this thesis is upon ways of approaching that goal. Only the last chapter is directly about the text of that romance. In the first chapter I consider the state of the field, religion and literature, with a view to identifying my own position in it. In the second, I look at the cultural historical contexts for reading the story, specifically, the seventeenth century Puritans and the nineteenth century American romance. The third chapter focuses on variants of the idea of spatiality, for instance, sacred space, topophilia, …

The Concept Of The Object Relation In The Writings Of Gotthard Booth, M.D.: An Example Of An Emerging Paradigm In Medicine, Thomas Charles Foster

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The writings of Gotthard Booth, M.D., especially his concept of object relation, demonstrate a change in medical thought away from a mechanistic to a holistic conception of man. His concept of the object relation and the diagnostic rationale that he developed from it reveal changes in medical conceptualization that are consistent with those changes in conceptualization across a variety of disciplines that have been identified as part of an emerging paradigm.

The Role Of The Mystic Actor At The Decline Of Civilization, Susan Dunlop Harper

The Custom Profile Extrusion Industry In Southern Ontario An Economic And Geographic Examination Of A Growth-Pole, Melvyn William Beetham Jan 1983

The Custom Profile Extrusion Industry In Southern Ontario An Economic And Geographic Examination Of A Growth-Pole, Melvyn William Beetham

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Custom Profile Extrusion Industry, which is one segment of the total Plastics Industry, has developed within Southern Ontario during the last two decades. The behaviour of the firms which make up the Profile Industry has not been scrutinized, collectively, to determine whether or not they qualified as a growth pole within the context of Perroux’s theory. Through the use of a heuristic approach this industry has been studied and evaluated. The findings from the data collected from these firms has been examined to ascertain the relevancy of this industry within a growth pole concept.

Arson In Toronto: A Geographical Perspective (Ontario), James Richards Jan 1983

Arson In Toronto: A Geographical Perspective (Ontario), James Richards

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is an empirical study of the crime of arson in Toronto from a geographical perspective. Although empirical in nature there is a framework of analysis that hopefully provides a starting point for theoretical development. The study is loosely organized around the framework of four areas of arson research which include: antecedent environmental conditions, organismic variables, actual firesetting behavior, and the consequences of firesetting. To each one of these areas of research geographical analysis is possible. In most cases it was necessary in this study to incorporate the findings from the psychological and sociological literature into the geographical analysis. …

Regional Variations Among Ethnic Groups In Ontario A Core-Periphery Model, Robert George Sharpe Jan 1983

Regional Variations Among Ethnic Groups In Ontario A Core-Periphery Model, Robert George Sharpe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis performs a spatial analysis of Ontario’s structure of ethnic stratification. It examines several spatial manifestations of the contrasts in socio-economic well-being—income, education, and occupation—between Ontario’s British majority and seven ethnic minority categories. The major data source for this analysis includes published Canadian Census data and special tabulations of the 1971 Census. Regional patterns of spatial distribution shown by the various ethnic categories are described and compared using location quotients and the centrographic statistical technique. Applying a core-periphery model of regional structure and development, a tendency was found for ethnic categories of subordinate socio-economic status to be disproportionately concentrated …
