Environmental Variables Affecting Ant (Formicidae) Community Composition In Mississippi's Black Belt And Flatwoods Regions, Jovonn Grady Hill

The relationship of ant community composition to various habitat characteristics is compared across four habitat types and 12 environmental variables in Mississippi. The four habitat types include pasture, prairie, and oak-hickory forests in the Black Belt and forests in the Flatwoods physiographic region. Ants were sampled using pitfall traps, litter sampling, baiting and hand collecting. A total of 20,916 ants representing 68 species were collected. NMS and ANCOVA both revealed three distinct ant communities (pasture, prairie, and ?forests?) based on species composition and mean ant abundance per habitat type between the four habitat types. The purpose of this project was to distinguish between the karst and pseudokarst caves throughout Mississippi, create an inventory and survey of representative caves and karst features, identify the geology of the rocks hosting the caves, and produce a GIS-based digital karst map. The State of Mississippi is not known for its karst features, yet there are three distinct limestone units that contain dissolution caves: 1) Paleozoic (Mississippian) Tuscumbia Formation limestone; 2) Mesozoic carbonate units; and 3) Cenozoic limestone, Marianna Formation. We'd Love to Have You on Our Show is a collection of short fiction preceded by a critical introduction. The stories share a thematic bond in that that all of the protagonists are either obsessed with or could be guests on talk shows. The introduction, "The Meaning of Yearning" explores how Robert Olen Butler and Denis Johnson have influenced me as a young writer attempting to write interconnected, character-driven stories.
