“Growing Up Water” is a full-length manuscript consisting of one long poem in two parts. Louisiana is one of the most verdant naturally fertile states in the U.S. The state loses a football field of land almost every one-hundred minutes. This is largely due to climate change, oil drilling in the gulf, the cutting of canals, the waste poured in to the Mississippi river by the chemical plants that line this area (known as “Cancer Alley”), the onslaught of invasive species, the list goes on. High concentrations of ammonium (NH4+) aerosols can lead to acidification of soils, forest decline, and eutrophication of water ways (Aneja et al. 2003). NH4+ along with its precursor ammonia (NH3) forms a complicated gas aerosol system that is poorly understood and requires further research. Rotating annular denuder systems actively sampled NH4+ from the northern corner of a sugarcane field at 2.89 m and 5.18 m above the northern corner of a sugarcane field in St. Gabriel, Louisiana over 31 days and 31 nights between May 25th and July 27th of 2011. Evaluation Of The Impact Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill And Hurricanes On Wildfires In Southeast Louisiana, Richard Carley

Remotely sensed MODIS fire detections were used to examine wildfire variability from 2003-2011 in southeast Louisiana, and to determine if the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and hurricanes may have impacted fire frequency and intensity. Despite low wildfire detection rates, around 60% for fires at least 1 km2 or greater, the MODIS fire product provided a consistent and reliable source of wildfire data. As a result of Hurricane Katrina, wildfire detection frequencies doubled their average numbers during the fall of 2005 in inland areas and during the spring of 2006 in inland and coastal marsh areas. Climatic Variability At Modoc Rock Shelter (Illinois) And Watson Brake (Louisiana): Biometric And Isotopic Evidence From Archaeological Freshwater Mussel Shell, Sarah Mistak Caughron

This thesis assesses climate change during the Hypsithermal Climatic Interval through the analysis of freshwater mussel remains from archaeological sites in Eastern North America. Modern climate data was used as a model to test the mosaic consequences of climate change. Freshwater mussels: can be used as indicators of precipitation by examining changes in overall size through time: larger mussels are found in larger streams, while smaller mussels are found in smaller streams. This study combines morphometric and isotopic data from archaeological freshwater mussels at Modoc Rock Shelter, Watson Brake, Plum Creek, Owens site, and Landerneau mounds to assess past climatic …
