Identifying The Shortest Log Trucking Routes And Optimizing Those Constrained By Low-Weight Bridges In Mississippi, Swagat Attreya

Timber haulage in Mississippi incurs the greatest portion of logging expenses because of a myriad of closed and posted (restricted) bridges. This study utilized Dijkstra's algorithm method in ArcGIS Pro to derive 129 feasible shortest optimal trucking routes between 46 harvest sites and 32 softwood sawmills in Mississippi. Among these routes, 30 of them had restricted bridges along the way; however, only 13 viable alternative routes were identified due to distance and weight restrictions. The additional trucking distance for alternative routes ranged between 1.5 to 12.9 miles, whose effect on transportation cost was determined using a Mixed Integer Linear Programming …

More water utilities are adopting Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) to balance long-term water supply and demand. Due to large implementation and operation costs, ASR projects need to be optimized, particularly for energy use, which is a major operating expense. This study examines the relationships among energy use, recharge, and recovery at two ASR projects in the western United States. The major finding is an economy of scale for recovery processes, but not for gravity-fed recharge processes. The economy of scale found is as follows: the energy intensity recovered decreases with volume. This suggests it is more energy-efficient to recover …

Efficient and continuous monitoring of water quality parameters plays a pivotal role in responding to pollution incidents and ensuring the safety of both human consumption and ecological resources. This research introduces an affordable and dependable in-situ water quality sensor package designed for seamless continuous monitoring, providing essential data to facilitate informed decision-making in water resource management. The sensor package enables comprehensive on-site assessment of key water characteristics, including pH, temperature, turbidity (measured in NTU), and total dissolved solids (TDS, measured in ppm). The rise of cryptocurrencies has brought with it new math problems with new sets of constraints. The MEV problem entails solving for the ordering of pending trades that maximizes a block creator's profit. In decentralized finance, time is a big constraint, so an exhaustive search of all possible orderings is impossible. Time delays are an inherent part of real-world systems. Besides the apparent slowing of the system, these time delays often cause destabilization in otherwise stable systems, and perhaps even more unexpectedly, can stabilize an unstable system. Here, we propose the Stochastic Time-Delayed Adaptation as a method for improving optimization on certain high-dimensional surfaces, which simply wraps a known optimizer --such as the Adam optimizer-- and is able to add a variety of time-delays. We begin by exploring time delays on certain gradient-based optimization methods and their affect on the optimizer's convergence properties. The quiet zone of a radar range is the region over which a transmitted EM field approximates a uniform plane wave to within some finite error tolerance. Any target to be measured must physically fit within this quiet zone to prevent excess measurement error. Compact radar ranges offer significant operational advantages for performing RCS measurements but their quiet zone sizes are constrained by space limitations. Existing viscosity prediction methods and relevant literature are reviewed. An exhaustive review of group contribution, corresponding states, and interpolative prediction methods finds that even the best of these models produces large prediction errors and often require significant experimental data. Molecular dynamics simulation techniques for viscosity prediction are evaluated and compared to one another to determine the best choice for this work. A thorough investigation finds that Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics (EMD) simulations are the best option for reproducible and reliable liquid viscosity predictions.
