Lockdown Challenges And Policy Response To The Covid Pandemic For Female Domestic Workers In Egypt, Rafia Mazen

Theses and Dissertations

The swift widespread of the Covid-19 virus forced many governments to impose restrictions on movement early in 2020. The unique composition of the informal labor market leaves it vulnerable in face of economic shocks. The fragility of work conditions in the informal market and the absence of social insurance among its participants, left them fending to make ends meet. Paid domestic workers carry the double burden of engaging in the informal market while performing a job that is traditionally associated with women’s unpaid labor. The pandemic has hadunprecedented economic implications; uninsured, unprotected and out of the policy formulators’radar, paid domestic …

African Refugee Students' Access To Higher Education: Exploring Their Challenges In Egypt, Hagar El Sayed Younes

Theses and Dissertations

Higher education is very crucial to the development of individuals and societies alike. Higher education empowers refugees to become self-reliant and agents of change instead of being passive recipients of grants or assistance. Today, more than ever, it is probable that refugees face many challenges to access higher education given Egypt’s restrictive enrollment policy, refugees’ dire economic and social situations, the diminishing durable solutions which can permanently solve refugees’ situation such as voluntary repatriation, resettlement, and local integration; and finally, the reluctance of donors to fund higher education programs. Therefore, this research attempts to explore the challenges facing African refugee …

Inhabiting Suspension: Neoliberalism And The Public Servants In Ismailia's Radio Canal, Mayar Ibrahim

Theses and Dissertations

To be a public servant in 2021 is to endure many sociopolitical and financial hardships as well as many stereotypes. Between living in dire straits and lacking any motive to work, the public servants and their behavior are almost always rendered indolent. Yet, this ambiguous/all-inclusive category needs to be pinned down, shaped in a sociopolitical landscape in which change is analyzed, documented, and conveyed. In the journey of uncovering what it is like to be working in a service governmental institution, Radio Canal in Ismailia allowed me to delve into a segment of the public servant category in a moment …

Good Governance And Civil Service Reform In Egypt, Ahmed Atef Labib Jan 2022

Good Governance And Civil Service Reform In Egypt, Ahmed Atef Labib

Theses and Dissertations

Governments in different states and even different governments within the same state may pursue different goals. To achieve their goals they apply administrative reforms, including civil service reforms, to adjust the government for achieving the intended goals. Pursuing different goals entails applying different administrative reforms. In the 2000s, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggested the Egyptian government, through loan conditionality, an administrative and civil service reform to promote economic growth based on their concept of good governance. In this paper, I argue that the suggested reform does not target economic growth but targets debt repayment. To …
