Prior to 2004 Egyptian law allowed for conferral of nationality by paternal descent only, with few exceptions. By barring Egyptian women from passing their nationality to their children, such legislation reflected a belief that women were in fact not full members of the national political community on an equal footing with men. Facing pressure from both internal and external sources, the Egyptian government reformed the law in 2004, thereby allowing women to confer their nationality on their children. This study explores issue salience among Egyptian Facebook users during the parliamentary elections of December 2011. The researcher examines the potential of agenda-setting effects occurring from the use of social media as an information source. In this study, a field experiment with a pretest/posttest design was conducted on 71 undergraduates of the American University in Cairo. Participants were assigned to treatment groups, some of which were exposed to media concerning the issue of ignorance/illiteracy in Egypt. This study analyzes the different frames used by popular newspapers Al-Ahram and Al-Masry Al-Youm in covering Egypt's January 25 revolution. The researcher conducted a content analysis of news stories and news features of both newspapers during the 18 days of uprisings that started on January 25, 2011 and ended by former President Hosni Mubarak handing over power to the Supreme Council of Armed Forced (SCAF) on February 11, 2011. The study analyzes 241 stories in Al-Ahram and 174 stories in Al-Masry Al-Youm during this period. This thesis is an attempt to address the politics of generational gaps within Muslim Brotherhood Movement in Egypt since mid 1980s till 2011. It sheds light on patterns of generational interactions, issues of concern, and their impact on the future trajectory of the Movement. It conceptually employs the Generational Unit Model, drawn largely from the work of Karl Mannheim. In doing so, the study applies focused semi-structured interviews with the movement's affiliated members from antagonistic generational units. In the wake of the Egyptian January 25, 2011 popular uprisings that deposed Hosni Mubarak from the presidency, youth and leaders from Kanisset Kasr el Dobara (KDEC) in Tahrir Square embarked on new and unpredictable political projects and activisms. This ethnographic study is an engagement with these new revolutionary negotiations on the part of the largest Protestant congregation in the Middle East. Egypt has a large profitable football industry that increasingly attracts the attention of both football agents wanting to earn income from another market and sub-Saharan football players hoping to further a career by using Egypt as an intermediary between their home countries and Europe. This thesis attempts to analyze the role that class plays in determining attitudes to gender among upper middle class Egyptian Copts. Through fieldwork, it explores the relationship between class, religion and gender in the lives of upper middle class Christian women. This research focuses on the Egyptian Social Democratic Party (ESDP) and the Egyptian Stream Party (ESP) as case studies to understand how post-January 2011 political parties approached mainstream politics, and how the revolutionary protest movements developed to further penetrate the public sphere of Egyptian politics. The focal concern of this research is to investigate how these political parties were formed in the aftermath of popular participated uprising, and what characteristics they inherited from a long heritage of informal activism to mainstream politics.
