The Implementation Of Nanoimprint Lithography For The Fabrication Of Patterned Magnetic Media, Daniel David Marks
The Implementation Of Nanoimprint Lithography For The Fabrication Of Patterned Magnetic Media, Daniel David Marks
Theses and Dissertations
Advances in technology are having profound effects throughout society. This is no truer than in the way information is being stored. The primary form of information storage for at least the past millennium has been paper. Today, an ever increasing amount of information is being stored electronically. An increased demand for high-performance, low-cost information storage has been a major catalyst in increasing the popularity of hard drives. In 2002, two exabytes of original information was stored on hard drives. This is ten times the amount of all printed material in the world if it were converted to electronic files. To …
An Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (Art) For The Synthesis Of Three-Dimensional Models Of Particle Aggregates From Projective Representations, Daniel Jonathan Randall-Barrot
An Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (Art) For The Synthesis Of Three-Dimensional Models Of Particle Aggregates From Projective Representations, Daniel Jonathan Randall-Barrot
Theses and Dissertations
There exists considerable evidence that the shear behavior and flow behavior of granular materials is significantly dependent on particle morphology. However, quantification of this dependence is a challenging task owing to a dearth of quantitative models for describing particle shape and the difficulty of modeling angular particle assemblies. The situation becomes more complex when discrete element analyses of realistic 3-D particle shapes are required. The thesis attempts to address this problem by adapting the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) to synthesize composite 3-D granular particles from statistically obtained 3-D shape descriptors of the particles in an aggregate mixture. This thesis extends …
Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll
Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis utilized a linear analytical approach to explore the damage tolerance or residual strength as a function of increasing damage in traditional single and hybrid-grid IsoTruss® structures. Residual strength was studied for structures subjected to axial compression, torsion and flexural bending, independently. Carbon/epoxy material properties were applied in all load cases, and fiberglass/epoxy material properties were also applied in the flexural bending case. Prior to imposing damage conditions, the IsoTruss® structures were parametrically optimized to achieve the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Typical compression strut, driveshaft, and utility pole specifications governed the design strength dimensions and boundary conditions. Damage growth was …
Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall
Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall
Theses and Dissertations
Many environments in which an agent can use reinforcement learning techniques to learn profitable strategies are affected by other learning agents. These situations can be modeled as general-sum games. When playing repeated general-sum games with other learning agents, the goal of a self-interested learning agent is to maximize its own payoffs over time. Traditional reinforcement learning algorithms learn myopic strategies in these games. As a result, they learn strategies that produce undesirable results in many games. In this dissertation, we develop and analyze algorithms that learn non-myopic strategies when playing many important infinitely repeated general-sum games. We show that, in …

Delayed Versus Immediate Feedback In An Independent Study High School Setting, Duane C. Lemley
Delayed Versus Immediate Feedback In An Independent Study High School Setting, Duane C. Lemley
Theses and Dissertations
Although there is general agreement that feedback plays an important role in student performance, the majority of the studies found in the research literature explore the impact of different types of feedback in a traditional and university-level setting. In order to explore the impact of different feedback types in a non-traditional distance learning setting, 352 high school students enrolled in courses offered through BYU's Independent Study (IS) department received either delayed feedback or immediate feedback generated by Speedback™, BYU's automated grading and feedback program, depending on whether they had opted to submit end of unit assignments by mail or …
Toiling Among The Seed Of Israel: A Comparison Of Puritan And Mormon Missions To The Indians, Christina A. Skousen
Toiling Among The Seed Of Israel: A Comparison Of Puritan And Mormon Missions To The Indians, Christina A. Skousen
Theses and Dissertations
Substantial comparative analyses of Puritanism and Mormonism are lacking in historical scholarship, despite noted similarities between the two religions. This study helps to fill that void by comparing the Puritan and Mormon proselytization efforts among the Indians that occurred at the respective sites of Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Southern Indian Mission. In my examination of the missionization attempts that took place at these two locations, I analyze a common motive and method of the two denominations for attempting to Christianize the Indians. The Puritan and Mormon missionaries proselytizing in Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Southern Indian Mission shared an …
Using Prospect Theory To Investigate Decision-Making Bias Within An Information Security Context, Neil J. Schroeder
Using Prospect Theory To Investigate Decision-Making Bias Within An Information Security Context, Neil J. Schroeder
Theses and Dissertations
Information security is an issue that has increased in importance over the past decade. In this time both practitioner and academic circles have researched and developed practices and process to more effectively handle information security. Even with growth in these areas there has been little research conducted into how decision makers actually behave. This is problematic because decision makers in the Department of Defense have been observed exhibiting risk seeking behavior when making information security decisions that seemingly violate accepted norms. There are presently no models in the literature that provide sufficient insight into this phenomenon. This study used Prospect …
The Making Of The Ahupuaa Of Laie Into A Gathering Place And Plantation: The Creation Of An Alternative Space To Capitalism, Cynthia Woolley Compton
The Making Of The Ahupuaa Of Laie Into A Gathering Place And Plantation: The Creation Of An Alternative Space To Capitalism, Cynthia Woolley Compton
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a labor history of the Laie sugar plantation between 1865 and 1931. It explores intercultural and race relations that were inherent to colonial and plantation processes in Hawaii. Particular attention is given to the role of religion in advancing the colonial project. In 1865 Mormon missionaries bought approximately 6,000 acres with the hope of creating a gathering place for Hawaiian converts to settle in. The ideal of the gathering was a metaphor the missionaries brought with them from Utah, and it was a metaphor appropriated by Hawaiians and infused with their own cultural meanings, particularly the importance …
Electromagnetism In Gravitational Collapse, Craig Ernest Skinfill
Electromagnetism In Gravitational Collapse, Craig Ernest Skinfill
Theses and Dissertations
A numerical approach to including electromagnetism with general relativity is developed using GRAXI as a starting point. We develop a mathematical model describing electromagnetism coupled to a scalar field in an evolving axisymmetric spacetime. As there are numerous formulations of electromagnetism, we evalute different formulations in a limited flat space case. The full curved space system is then developed, using the flat case as a guide to implementing electromagnetism. This model is then implemented using GRAXI as a code base.

Toward A Domain Theory Of Fluent Oral Reading With Expression, Reo H. Mcbride
Theses and Dissertations
Today's educators are in need of tests or rating systems that provide specific and valid feedback to parents, students and programs. This need includes the area of expressive fluent oral reading. One way to address this need is to provide a rating system based on theoretical models that explore how fluency develops. This study explores the dimensions, constructs, or aspects that make up fluency. It also explores whether there is a sequence or order in how fluent oral reading with expression develops and the theoretical reasons for that ordering. This study further addresses whether word recognition or accuracy confounds the …

Fatigue Crack Growth Under Residual Stresses Around Holes, Ramesh Nagaralu
Theses and Dissertations
Compressive residual stresses induced by tensile overloads, compressive under loads, or by a cold-expansion process in specimens containing a circular hole and their influence on subsequent fatigue crack growth in aluminum alloys are studied. The finite element method is used to calculate residual stresses. The superposition method, which uses crack-tip stress intensity factors for cases involving remote loading and residual stresses, is used to calculate crack growth life for three kinds of tests from the literature: (1) fatigue of a circular hole specimen after an overload or under load, (2) single crack growing from a circular hole after a severe …
Critical Analysis Of Sic Sit Design And Performance Based Upon Material And Device Properties, Yunmo Sung
Critical Analysis Of Sic Sit Design And Performance Based Upon Material And Device Properties, Yunmo Sung
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, the need for high power, high frequency devices continues to grow with the increase in wireless communication, radar systems, HDTV, digital communication, and other military application of the RF spectrum. Traditionally when higher power is needed, one needs to either combine the output power of multiple devices or use vacuum tubes, which are still uncontested at very high power levels, capable of up to a few hundred kilowatts at 5 GHz [11]. But wide band gap semiconductor devices capable of competing in this application. Moreover, the static induction transistor (SIT) in silicon carbide can provide very high total power …
Definition, Analysis, And An Approach For Discrete-Event Simulation Model Interoperability, Tai-Chi Wu
Definition, Analysis, And An Approach For Discrete-Event Simulation Model Interoperability, Tai-Chi Wu
Theses and Dissertations
Even though simulation technology provides great benefits to industry, it is largely underutilized. One of the biggest barriers to utilizing simulation is the lack of interoperability between simulation models. This is especially true when simulation models that need to interact with each other span an enterprise or supply chain. These models are likely to be distributed and developed in disparate simulation application software. In order to analyze the dynamic behavior of the systems they represent, the models must interoperate. However, currently this interoperability is nearly impossible. The interaction of models also refers to the understanding of them among stakeholders in …
Development Of Conjugate Heat Transfer Capability To An Unstructured Flow Solver - U2ncle, Qingluan Xue
Development Of Conjugate Heat Transfer Capability To An Unstructured Flow Solver - U2ncle, Qingluan Xue
Theses and Dissertations
A precise prediction of the heat loads in metal materials in contact with the hot gas is an increasingly demanding problem in the design phase of the complex cooling schemes in the modern turbine engines. The coupled calculation of the fluid flow and the heat transfer is a promising approach as heat transfer coefficients are not necessary in the calculation and the heat transfer itself is part of the calculation and can be derived from local heat fluxes. Therefore, it is useful to incorporate an appropriate scheme for directly coupled heat transfer computations (conjugate heat transfer), capable of handling complex …
An Investigation Of Firms' Earnings Management Practices Around Product Recalls, Zeeshan Ahmed
An Investigation Of Firms' Earnings Management Practices Around Product Recalls, Zeeshan Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the earnings management practices of firms around product recalls. In recent years, the management of earnings around firm-specific events has received considerable attention in the finance and accounting literature. New equity issues, mergers and acquisitions, share repurchases, and management buyouts are some events around which at least some firms have been shown to manage their earnings to achieve managements? objectives. Product recalls offer yet another interesting occasion when managers have incentives to cover up the true financial performance of their firms and mislead investors. In order to determine whether firms announcing product recalls manage earnings more aggressively …
Study Of Partial Discharge Activity In Magnet Wires Aged By Combined Stresses, Ashwini Mani
Study Of Partial Discharge Activity In Magnet Wires Aged By Combined Stresses, Ashwini Mani
Theses and Dissertations
Partial discharge testing is a nondestructive method of identifying possible premature insulation breakdown. Magnet wires are used in various electrical equipment like injection coils, solenoids, small transformers and motors. Winding wires used in high voltage systems are subjected to several stresses during operation, which considerably lowers their lifetime. A prolonged combined effect of these stresses causes aging of the wires, inception of partial discharge activity, and degradation of the organic material in the enamel coating and varnish used by the manufacturer. The tests were conducted for AWG 30 and AWG 31 twisted magnet wire samples. The samples are aged under …

Exploring Extensions Of Traditional Honeypot Systems And Testing The Impact On Attack Profiling, Robert Wesley Mcgrew
Exploring Extensions Of Traditional Honeypot Systems And Testing The Impact On Attack Profiling, Robert Wesley Mcgrew
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores possibilities for extending the features of honeypot systems to decrease the chance of an attacker discovering that they have compromised a honeypot. It is proposed that by extending the period of time that an attacker spends on a honeypot oblivious to its status, more information relevant to profiling the attacker can be gained. Honeypots are computer systems that are deployed in a way that attackers can easily compromise them. These systems, which contain no production data, are useful both as early warning systems for attacks on production systems, and for studying the tools, techniques, and motives of …

Critical Properties Of Small World Ising Models, Xingjun Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, the critical scaling behavior of magnetic Ising models with long range interactions is studied. These long range interactions, when imposed in addition to interactions on a regular lattice, lead to small-world graphs. By using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, together with finite-size scaling, the critical behavior of a number of different models is obtained. The Ising models studied in this dissertation include the z-model introduced by Scalettar, standard small-world bonds superimposed on a square lattice, and physical small-world bonds superimposed on a square lattice. From the scaling results of the Binder 4th order cumulant, the order parameter, and …
Parallel Compositing Of Multi-Temporal Satellite Imagery Using Temporal Map Algebra, Bijay Shrestha
Parallel Compositing Of Multi-Temporal Satellite Imagery Using Temporal Map Algebra, Bijay Shrestha
Theses and Dissertations
Spatio-temporal satellite image analysis is a technique for monitoring spatial and temporal changes of land cover and oceanic locations on earth. Temporal Map Algebra (TMA) is a novel technique developed by Jeremy Mennis and Roland Viger for analyzing a time series of satellite imagery using simple algebraic operators that treats time series of imagery as a threedimensional data set, where two dimensions encode planimetric position on earth surface and the third dimension encodes time. The high dimensionality of raster data leads to high computational cost, which is why parallel computation is attractive. This thesis describes the design, implementation, andmperformance evaluation …

Fast Reconfiguration Algorithm Development For Shipboard Power Systems, Yan Huang
Fast Reconfiguration Algorithm Development For Shipboard Power Systems, Yan Huang
Theses and Dissertations
Todays protection schemes for shipboard applications, such as the zone-based differential protection, are efficient, fast, and reliable for fault detection. However, these protection schemes do not consider the system stability or power balance problems that occur with fault isolation and the system reconfiguration. This thesis focuses on developing the extended protection function including the fast reconfiguration function that intends to maintain the power balance of the unfaulted subsystem. Graph theory is utilized to represent the shipboard power system topology in matrices, and matrix operations are developed to represent the corresponding power system topology change and evaluate the outcome of the …
