Software architectures increase productivity when used as the basis for developing applications in a problem domain. This thesis describes the creation of Easy-Sim, an object-oriented software architecture for visual simulation systems, and its corresponding implementation as an application framework in Ada 9X. The research built upon ObjectSim, an existing object-oriented simulation architecture implemented as a application framework. Both ObjectSim and Easy-Sim operate on Silicon Graphics platforms and use the IRIS Performer graphics programming library. Easy-Sim is implemented using version 1.83 of the GNAT compiler. A Parallel Discrete Event Simulation Coprocessor was designed for conservative synchronization protocols and was implemented in software using some of a parallel computer's nodes to act as coprocessors. The coprocessor was designed to offload synchronization overhead and next event queue management from the nodes running the simulation. The coprocessor was designed to accelerate simulations based on the Simulation Protocol Evaluation on a Concurrent Testbed with ReUsable Modules (SPECTRUM) environment. AFIT's Synthetic BattleBridge is an immersive command observatory for viewing large-area activity within a virtual environment. Three basic areas for improvement are addressed: (1) an improved, immersive, user interface, (2) direct control of atmospheric effects, and (3) improved knowledge elicitation by means of remote viewers, a new space scope, and an enhanced RADAR scope. These requirements are analyzed and implemented. Some functionality was lost but the results show a general improvement of environmental control and knowledge elicitation.

Computer simulation was used to evaluate the impact of a Logistics Control Facility LCF with a Total Asset Visibility TAV system on the AF logistics systems ability to support a weapon system. For this study, the B-1B was chosen as the weapon system of interest. Two performance measures, expected fully mission capable rates and expected pipeline quantities, were used to evaluate the simulation results. Two-sample tests were used to compare the current logistics configuration of the B-1B with the same configuration, but with an LCF controlling the movement of assets. This thesis investigates issues involved in developing a dynamic load balancing model for a parallel discrete event battlefield simulation. The research covers issues in task management, discrete-event simulation, parallel simulation, and load balancing. There are four primary issues discussed concerning the design of a dynamic load balancing model. The first issue is processor load evaluation which deals with the calculation of the amount of work on a processor. This research investigated the combined influence of simulation work and metamodel specification on the statistical quality of the estimates obtained from the resulting metamodels of the simulation data. A 9 x 2 x 2 experiment consisting of 9 cases of simulation work, 2 levels of metamodel specification, and 2 levels of design fractionation were designed for 8 different configurations of MMk queues. The only observed statistic for this experiment was the average queue length. Simulation estimates for each configurations average queue length were calculated directly from the simulation data. This study examined two animation displays moving icons, bar graphs at two presentation speeds to determine how each of these factors affected the animations ability to communicate violations of model assumptions. Subjects viewed animation displays individually and in combination at each presentation speed. Eight problem scenarios were presented to evaluate each animations ability to communicate violations of different assumptions. Each animations communication ability was measured subjectively and objectively. Subjective measures in the form of pairwise comparisons were used to calculate normalized preference ratings for each animation. objective measures included problem identification accuracy and problem time.
