A Study Of Natural Language Phonetic Symbolism, David B. Tarr Dec 1979

A Study Of Natural Language Phonetic Symbolism, David B. Tarr

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation concerns itself with the phenomenon of natural language phonetic symbolism. Proponents of phonetic symbolism, or the hypothesis of phonetic universals, as it is sometimes called, claim that human speech sounds have inherent meaning apart from their learned association with referents in the world. Since phonetic symbolism had been used to explain both success in guessing the meanings of foreign words and also a consistent tendency to attribute particular meanings to selected nonlinguistic verbalizations, it was hypothesized that phonetic symbols were part of an underlying stratum of semantic invariance. Further, it was assumed that such phonetic/semantic symbols should …

The Relationship Between Transitional Object Attachments In Early Childhood And Psychological Functioning In Later Life, Keith Cohen Dec 1979

The Relationship Between Transitional Object Attachments In Early Childhood And Psychological Functioning In Later Life, Keith Cohen

Theses and Dissertations

This study focused upon assessing various relationships between the presence or absence of a transitional object in early childhood and aspects of psychological functioning in later life. The nature of the inanimate object attachments were determined by stringent criteria involving both self- and parental-reports. Personality differences were found between those subjects demonstrating strong singular attachments that persisted for a considerable period of time and those having no such significant attachments. The nature of what might be considered optimal object attachments was discussed in light of the findings.

A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson Dec 1979

A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation is a descriptive study of formative research in four arts enrichment activities developed for the elementary classroom. The appendix contains the essential parts of this description. The rationale for developing enrichment activities for the elementary classroom is related to the lack of background and confidence many elementary educators have for the arts in education. The traditional practice leads educators to exclude arts enrichment activities from their programs.

The formative research in this study is based on four enrichment units used by teacher raters who were trained through in-service sessions. They taught the enrichment activities to eighty elementary students. …

Internal And External Context Effects Upon The Types Of Information Encoded From Pictures, James G. Penland Dec 1979

Internal And External Context Effects Upon The Types Of Information Encoded From Pictures, James G. Penland

Theses and Dissertations

Several investigators (e.g., Biederman, et al. 1974; Loftus & Bell 1975) have proposed that one's perception and subsequent recogni tion of pictured scenes results from the acquisition of two types of information. One is specific in nature and results from the direct inspection of object detail. The second type is more general in char acter and is thought to result from the processing of contextual in formation. Friedman (in press) has pointed out that context must be considered to encompass both internal (memorial) and external (physical) constraints, and as such to have a dual informational base. The present study was …

Liqiud-Liquid Extraction As An Alternative Separation Technique For Ethanol-Water Solutions, Michael Pirc Dec 1979

Liqiud-Liquid Extraction As An Alternative Separation Technique For Ethanol-Water Solutions, Michael Pirc

Theses and Dissertations

The feasibility of liquid extraction as an economic alternative to the ternary azeotrope distillation of an ethanol-water fermenta tion mixture was studied. Experimentation included the determination of the attractiveness of the potential solvents "Freon" TF, 1-pentene, ethyl ether, unleaded gasoline, and #2 diesel fuel. Selectivities and distribution coefficients for these solvents were determined. Analysis included generation of a process flowsheet and the resultant energy requirements and process economics.

Unleaded gasoline was selected aver #2 diesel fuel as the more attractive solvent based on the distribution coefficients, and "Freon" TF, 1-pentene, and ethyl ether were ruled out as potential solvents.

Nembi Discourse Structure, Ruth A. Tipton Dec 1979

Nembi Discourse Structure, Ruth A. Tipton

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis deals with the way paragraphs, sentences, and clauses are brought together in Nembi discourse to form a coherent unit. Insights into discourse structure and discourse analysis gained from Joseph Grimes, Robert E. Longacre, and Michael A. K. Halliday are applied in the study of Nembi narrative and procedural texts. The thesis is based on the analysis of fourteen texts: four procedural and ten narrative. Six of the narratives are ancestral legends, and four are based on recent events. The analysis has led to several conclusions about discourse in the Nembi language.

Discourse is organized into an introduction, a …

A Study Of A Selected School Theatre Arts Program, Jonathan Charles Tabbert

Theses and Dissertations

The Problem: The purpose of this study was to develop an analytic profile of a secondary education theatre arts program. Five major areas were exam ined: (1) the students, (2) the school's administration, (3) the theatre arts faculty, (4) theatre arts course work, and (5) theatre arts produc tion work. In addition, an examination of the self concepts of theatre students and non-theatre students was made to see if differences existed between the two groups.

Sample: The sample for the study was made up of: (1) one hundred senior high school students from one North Dakota high school, (2) the …

A Study Of The Growth And Decline Of North Dakota Towns, 1920-1970, Christopher Troseth Dec 1979

A Study Of The Growth And Decline Of North Dakota Towns, 1920-1970, Christopher Troseth

Theses and Dissertations

Differences in percentage population change among North Dakota incorporated places of 250 to 2,500 inhabitants for the period 1920- 1970 were first explained statistically by means of spatial and economic variables. Additional insight concerning town population change was gained by a more detailed examination of selected towns, in which the number and type of business functions were stressed.

For each decade in the period 1920-1970, the relationship between percentage population change of towns with populations between 250 and 2,500 and four independent variables was measured by means of a stepwise multiple correlation and regression procedure. It was found that a …

Moral Judgment And Life Experiences, Edward P. Kehrwald Dec 1979

Moral Judgment And Life Experiences, Edward P. Kehrwald

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research in the cognitive developmental approach to moral judgment has been to delineate changes occurring with age in the person's understanding and interpretation of moral rules. Recently, the Defining Issues Test of moral judgment has been used as an objective, standardized measure due to its quantitative description of the developmental process. A systematic exploration of the importance of previous life experiences and their impacts upon the individual's moral judgment has not been reported in the literature.

The current study investigated the association between subjects' use of principled moral judgment with their previous life experiences, and with the perceived impact …

The Learning Package As An Instructional Tool For Non-Certified Pre-Kindergarten Teaching Personnel, Daniel James Gartrell

Theses and Dissertations

The population of non-certified pre-kindergarten teachers in northern Minnesota have encountered problems in obtaining formal, on- campus teaching instruction. "Self Concept Development and the Teacher- Child Relationship" was one of many learning packages developed at Bemidji State University to assist the population. The dissertation was a response to two topics of inquiry about the population and the learning package: (A) What are typical pre-package responses by the population toward young children in respect to self concept development? (B) How effective is the learning package as an instructional tool intended to facilitate the internalization of principles relating to self concept development? …

Consumer Motivation Affecting The Purchase Of Sears Service Maintenance Contracts In The Minot Area, Daniel E. Kearney

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted in the Minot area of persons having service maintenance contracts on their Sears appliances to determine the motivations affecting the purchase of the service maintenance contracts. The study utilized a sample of names obtained from friends and others and analyzed by content analysis. As a result of this research, it was discovered that the primary reason for purchasing a contract was an economic motive. It was further learned that Sears did not emphasize the economic factor in their promotional appeals. Therefore, the following has been concluded: the consumers' purchase of service maintenance contracts was not made …

The Effects Of Imaginal Strategies, Trait Anxiety And Sex Differences On Skin Temperature And Attentional Bias, Ryan D. Jagim Aug 1979

The Effects Of Imaginal Strategies, Trait Anxiety And Sex Differences On Skin Temperature And Attentional Bias, Ryan D. Jagim

Theses and Dissertations

Past research has suggested the potency of imagery in mediating peripheral skin temperature changes (Maslach, Marshall & Zimbardo, 1972). Imagery has also been found to be a relevant variable in the research area of brain lateralization (Morgan, McDonald & McDonald, 1971). The present study drew these rather divergent lines of research together by utilizing imagery as the common factor. This study investigated the relationship between hemispheric laterality and autonomic laterality by concomitantly monitoring bilateral skin temperature and lateral hemispheric activation as measured by attentional bias (Kinsbourne, 1970). In addition, the present study provided a test of the potency of imaginal …

Relative Hemispheric Involvement During Arousal And Inhibition Of Affect, Steven L. Shearer Aug 1979

Relative Hemispheric Involvement During Arousal And Inhibition Of Affect, Steven L. Shearer

Theses and Dissertations

The predominant view of hemispheric contributions to emotional ity focuses upon the inherent emotionality of the right hemisphere, in contrast to the logical, rational, nonemotional characteristics of the left hemisphere. However, recent research has also implicated contri butions of the left hemisphere during affective arousal (d'Elia & Perris, 1973, 1974; Ehrlichman & Wiener, Notes 10, 11; Harman & Ray, 1977; Tucker, Antes, Stenslie & Barnhardt, 1978; Tucker, Roth & Shearer, Note 7). Some reports have implicated the left hemisphere in negative affect (Ehrlichman & Wiener, Notes 10, 11; Harman & Ray, 1977), and the right hemisphere in positive affect (Ehrlichman …

Self-Esteem Effects In The Measurement Of Sex-Role Orientation, Steven H. Weaver Aug 1979

Self-Esteem Effects In The Measurement Of Sex-Role Orientation, Steven H. Weaver

Theses and Dissertations

In a replication of a study which demonstrated a relationship between Masculinity and Independence, the nature of the relationship between Self-esteem and orthogonal Masculinity and Femininity di mensions was examined. Regression analyses for 212 female and 165 male undergraduates indicated that for both sexes, Masculinity was moderately correlated to Self-esteem, but that Femininity did not add to this prediction significantly. Scores for Independence were obtained from a subset of 24 females and 29 males by placing them in a conformity paradigm situation. The major hypothesis was that Masculinity would not contribute uniquely to the prediction of Inde pendence made on …
