Simultaneous Development Of Velocity And Temperature Profiles In The Annulus With Laminar Flow And Both Walls At Constant Temperatures, Stephen Lothair Ritchie Oct 1964

Simultaneous Development Of Velocity And Temperature Profiles In The Annulus With Laminar Flow And Both Walls At Constant Temperatures, Stephen Lothair Ritchie

Theses and Dissertations

Forced convection heat transfer in the entrance region of tubes and ducts has been studied extensively since the pioneering work of Graetz. Most of the published solutions for axial flow heat transfer are based on the idealization of either fully established or uniform velocity profiles with developing temperature.

Cytogenetic Studies Of Cercocarpus In Utah, Grant Lloyd Pyrah Sep 1964

Cytogenetic Studies Of Cercocarpus In Utah, Grant Lloyd Pyrah

Theses and Dissertations

Within the genus Cercocarpus H.B.K., commonly called mountain mahogany, there are three species, C. monanus Raf., C. ledifolius Nutt., and C. intricatus S. Wats., that occupy rather distinct habitats in Utah. During the past two years a study of Cercocarpus populations growing throughout Utah has shown not only that hybridization does occur between all three species but that in some instances viable progeny are produced from these F1 hybrids. Despite rather severe isolation barriers, there is sufficient plasticity to permit inter-breeding under certain circumstances.

Analysis And Discussion Of The Effect Of Heat Loss From The "Insulated" Face Of Thin Foil Heat Flux Meters, Mont Johnson Stevens Sep 1964

Analysis And Discussion Of The Effect Of Heat Loss From The "Insulated" Face Of Thin Foil Heat Flux Meters, Mont Johnson Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this work was to investigate the effect that heat losses from the "insulated" face of thin foil heat flux meters has upon the sensitivity of heat flux meters. In the past it has been characteristic of any analysis done on heat flux meters to assume that the insulation on the back face of the foil was a perfect insulator and thereby neglect the effects of heat losses from this "insulated" face. It is hoped that the information given in this thesis will be of value in determining how the geometric and heat transfer parameters affect the operation …

Investigation Of Aerodynamic Hysteresis, Gerald Heber Peterson Sep 1964

Investigation Of Aerodynamic Hysteresis, Gerald Heber Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

The word hysteresis is derived from a Greek word meaning "to lag 'behind". As specifically applied to fluid flow around bodies with transient angles of attack in and near the stall region, "aerodynamic hysteresis" is used to describe the effect of delay in boundary layer separation and reattachment upon the lift, drag and pitching moment. Experimental work done on airfoils by H. Studer showed that for increasing angles of attack flow "separation is delayed to an angle of attack appreciably greater than that for a stationary airfoil. On the return movement, re-establishment of a smooth flow is also delayed." [1]* …

Distribution Patterns Of Pocket Gophers In The Hobble Creek Area, Utah County, Elvis J. Holt Aug 1964

Distribution Patterns Of Pocket Gophers In The Hobble Creek Area, Utah County, Elvis J. Holt

Theses and Dissertations

This study was initiated to investigate the distribution patterns of two species of pocket gophers, Thomomys umbrinus albicaudatus Hall and T. talpoides wasatchensis Durrant whose ranges come together in the Hobble Creek area, Utah. The effect of certain ecological factors upon their distribution was determined. The ecological factors included: vegetation and land use, soil, moisture and exposure, hybridization and interspecific competition. From morphological examination no interbreeding was detected even though the breeding seasons of the two species correspond. A limited area was found where the ranges of the two species are in contact. A lack of available moisture was determined …

A Study Of Albinism, And Some Mating Reactions In Psilocybe Mutans, Henry L. Curtis Aug 1964

A Study Of Albinism, And Some Mating Reactions In Psilocybe Mutans, Henry L. Curtis

Theses and Dissertations

In recent taxonomic works albinism is not generally recognized as being present in the Agaricales. This study was made to find how albinism was inherited in Psilocybe mutans McKnight. Cultures of P. mutans were incubated in a constant temperature room at 20-22°C. With artificial lighting at 150 foot candles for 16 hours per day and on a laboratory bench at a comparable temperature with diffuse natural light of a lesser intensity. Numerous fruit-bodies were obtained from cultures which grew on substrates containing hot water extracts of rabbit fecal pellets and from cultures grown on substates containing no fecal extracts. In …

Evaluation Of Methods Used In The Determination Of Stability Constants Of The Thallium (Iii)-Chloride System At Twenty-Five Degrees, Nelson Kent Dalley Aug 1964

Evaluation Of Methods Used In The Determination Of Stability Constants Of The Thallium (Iii)-Chloride System At Twenty-Five Degrees, Nelson Kent Dalley

Theses and Dissertations

The difficulties encountered in the determination of equilibrium constants in systems with small, not directly rneasureable free ligand concentrations are discussed. These difficulties are illustrated using the determination of the formation constants of the Tl(III)-Cl- system as a specific example. Four methods are used and evaluated in this study. They are (1) the corresponding solutions method, (2) the method of Fronaeus, (3) the solubility of AgCl in Tl(III) solution method and (4) the method of Hugus. A discussion and derivation of each of these methods is given. The first three methods given and free ligand concentration data from which formation …

Metabolism Of Thiamine And The Effect Of Some Antagonists, Russel M. Bender Aug 1964

Metabolism Of Thiamine And The Effect Of Some Antagonists, Russel M. Bender

Theses and Dissertations

To investigate the possibility that thiamine has more than one vital role in the mammalian system, it was decided to use the antagonists pyrithiamine and oxythiamine, and to utilize carbon-14 labeled compounds to more effectively study the vitamin and the above-named antagonists. To make it more effective, we felt that perhaps differences between the localization of oxythiamine and pyrithiamine could be detected in the brain. We also considered and tested the possibility that either or both of the antagonists would alter the localization of thiamine. Essentially, two procedures were used in this study. One was a counting method and the …

Trends In Promotion And Advertising Techniques Of Household Electrical Appliances By The Electric Utility Industry, Morris H. Toppila Aug 1964

Trends In Promotion And Advertising Techniques Of Household Electrical Appliances By The Electric Utility Industry, Morris H. Toppila

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to trace the development of national co-operative appliance advertising and promotional activities of the electric utility industry from 1882 to 1963. The principle source of information was the electrical trade magazines.

The advertising program of the electric utility industry has changed from emphasis on direct selling to coordination of national co-operative appliance campaigns. Advertising co-operation between retailers, manufacturers and the electric utility industry has been in existence since 1933.

The "Live Better Electrically" campaign is the most recent and successful of any co-operative promotional and advertising program. The Edison Electric Institute, representing the electric …

A Study Of Merit Rating Practices In The Lds Department Of Education, Garry Wayne Graf Jul 1964

A Study Of Merit Rating Practices In The Lds Department Of Education, Garry Wayne Graf

Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of the full-time Seminary teachers in the L.D.S. Department of Education regarding the present practice of merit pay for teachers employed in the System. Consideration was also given to merit pay programs for teachers in the public schools, since to a great extent merit pay practices in the public schools have given rise to many equivalent reactions among the personnel of L.D.S. Church schools.
