Biological Oxidation Of Copper Sulfide Minerals, Delmar Boyd Davis
Biological Oxidation Of Copper Sulfide Minerals, Delmar Boyd Davis
Theses and Dissertations
This work represents a study of the biological oxidation of copper sulfide minerals. The principal objective of the study was to determine the extent of bacterial oxidation on copper containing sulfide minerals. It was also desired to determine if the bacteria could oxidize copper sulfides in the absence of iron. A better understanding of the nitrogen requirements of the organisms was desired. Minerals used in this study were Bingham Canyon Float Concentrate, chalcopyrite, covellite, calcocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, and reagent grade copper sulfide. The bacteria used were obtained from the mine waters of Bingham Canyon, Utah. To study the problem the …
History Of Education In The Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation Of North Dakota, Robert J. Murray
History Of Education In The Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation Of North Dakota, Robert J. Murray
Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to trace the history of education of the Indians living in the Turtle Mountains. The education of these people has passed through several stages of development. The mission, the federal government and the public schools have provided education in varying degrees at different times.
The educational problem of the Turtle Mountains is unique. Indian people live on tax-free land assigned to them by treaty. As a result of these treaties between the Indian tribes and the federal government, most of the community services, including schools, usually provided for by local taxation, have been provided …

Some Preliminary Studies Of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Vectors In Utah, Marvin Dale Coffey
Some Preliminary Studies Of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Vectors In Utah, Marvin Dale Coffey
Theses and Dissertations
That the tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, was the vehicle of transmission for the disease Rocky Mountain spotted fever was first suggested by Wilson and Chowning (1902). The disease itself has been recognized since 1873, being first known from the Bitter Root Valley of Montana. The first medical record, however, was reported from Idaho by Wood (1896).
The Skeletal Anatomy Of Several Species Of Salamanders With Special Reference To Bolitoglossa Rufescens (Cope), Afton M. Hansen
The Skeletal Anatomy Of Several Species Of Salamanders With Special Reference To Bolitoglossa Rufescens (Cope), Afton M. Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
This paper deals with the complete skeletal anatomy ot Bolitoglossa rufescena (Cope). All parts are figured and described. In addition to this many of the main skeletal parts of Bolitoglossa platydactyla (Cuvier) Bolitoglossa occidentalis Taylor, and Bolitoglossa flaviventris (Schmidt) are described and figured. A comparison of the following parts of the above mentioned salamanders is presented: skull, atlas, ninth trunk vertebra, sixth caudal vertebra, carpals, tarsals and digits. The similarities and differences are pointed out as they appeared to the author. The relationship and specialization ot these species is discussed rather briefly.
Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Cations By Silicate Minerals, Milton Glen Armstrong
Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Cations By Silicate Minerals, Milton Glen Armstrong
Theses and Dissertations
Adsorption of cations by clays has been a subject of investigation for many years. Many proposals have been advanced to explain this process of adsorption. Two proposals have been prominent in recent years. The Marshall "charged lattice" theory attributes adsorption of cations by clays to an electrostatic attration of the clay particles for cations. This charge on the clay particles is attributed to various isomorphic substitutions in the lattice of the clay which result in an unbalanced charge on the particle. This isomorphic substitution can take place either in the silicon-oxygen tetrahedra of the silicate structure or with the aluminum …

The Spermatheca As A Taxonomic Aid In The Study Of Some Families Of Coleoptera, Lenord Daniel Moore
The Spermatheca As A Taxonomic Aid In The Study Of Some Families Of Coleoptera, Lenord Daniel Moore
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the spermathecae of sixty-eight species of Coleoptera, representing fifty-one genera and twenty-three families, were examined and are listed in the order they appear in Leng's Catalogue of the North American Coleoptera. An examination was made of ninety-five specimens of four different species to check for variation within the species. In only one species was there a departure from the pattern characteristic of the genus. Ther spermatheca is differentiated into the cornu, the nodulus and ramus. It is a sac in the female for the reception and storage of the spermatozoa until used for fertilizing the eggs. Among …

A Preliminary Study Of The Effect Of Thyroxin On The Transport Of Glucose Across The Tubule Cells Of The Dog Kidney, Hayle Buchanan
Theses and Dissertations
The graduate studies of the writer began at Brigham Young University in the Autunm of 1951, at which time he filed his intention of majoring in Zoology and minoring in Chemistry. During the first three quarters he received instruction under his committee chairman in a sequence of courses entitled: "Body Fluids", "Neurology", and "Endocrinology". During the first of these three courses the role of the kidneys in the maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment was discussed. During the course in Endocrinology the following statement was found in the text which suggested that the thyroid hormone might have an influence …

A Geomagnetic Survey Of Parts Of Pierce, Benson, Sheridan And Wells Counties, Harald C. Haraldson
A Geomagnetic Survey Of Parts Of Pierce, Benson, Sheridan And Wells Counties, Harald C. Haraldson
Theses and Dissertations
A magnetometer survey in respect to oil exploration is a regional reconnaissance tool and, therefore, it is customary to check an interesting magnetic anomaly with a seismograph or gravimeter. An exception to this is found in micro magnetic surveys which, because of their detailed nature 28 nature, may serve as a cheek on the other types of geophysical surveying.
The two large magnetic highs may be more areas in the basement rocks, and they may indicate structure. However, the large eastward-trending magnetic high area on the west side of the map area is quite possibly due to a regional increase …

The Position Of Adam In Latter-Day Scripture And Theology, Rodney Turner
The Position Of Adam In Latter-Day Scripture And Theology, Rodney Turner
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to determine, in so far as is possible, the views held by various leaders of the Latter-day Saints relative to Adam; and more especially, the official doctrine of the Church as to his place in its theology.
The problem is based, in part, on the divergent, and oft times bitter, claims and counter-claims of members, ex-members, and non-members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over "Mormon" teachings concerning Adam in the light of a certain address given by president Brigham Young in 1852. Indeed, this address, and the man who gave …

Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of Quinoxaline And Some Of Its Derivatives, Fred Dale Huillet
Theses and Dissertations
A long term research program into the chemistry of quinoxalines has been instituted at Brigham Young University with the aim of preparing the vinylquinoxalines so that their 1,4-addition reactions might be studied. The literature of quinoxaline chemistry has been thoroughly reviewed and assembled. Methods of preparing 2-methyl- and 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline have been studied and improved but all attempts to prepare the vinylquinoxalines have been unsuccessful. In the course of these attempts several compounds of unknown structure were prepared. The purpose of this investigation is to study the spectra of various known quinoxaline derivatives and to attempt to identify the unknowns by …
History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway
History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway
Theses and Dissertations
The Indian agent, the trapper, or the citizens of small Iowa townships were undoubtedly startled to see such a large movement of people and wagons across the state of Iowa. It was the winter and early spring of 1846. The onlooker would have seen men, women, and children muffled against the wintry blast, walking or riding in covered wagons and lesser vehicles. Somehow these people were different from the occasional companies bound for points West. Many were ill equipped. Many had a look of gentility, or as the frontiersman might say, a "citified look." They kept to themselves and often …
