How To Collaborate And Not Just Coexist: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Study On The Impact Of A Physician And Nurse Interprofessional Education Program On The Development Of Early Career Pediatrician Communication Skills And Collaborative Behaviors Once In Practice, Elizabeth L. Wueste

Theses & Dissertations

Healthcare organizations are challenged to build and develop interprofessional (IP) teams capable of delivering effective patient care (Tang et al., 2018). Historically, these multiple professional roles are not formally educated together but are all expected to work in unison once they enter practice (El-Hanafy, 2018). This lack of relational foundation has led to age-old conflict between the physician and nurse roles on the care team (Stein et al., 1990). This conflict has been attributed to a lack of role definition or an overemphasis on hierarchical structures, poor communication, and the inability of physicians to collaboratively work with their nurse counterparts …

Bayesian Modeling For Longitudinal Count Data: Applications In Biomedical Research, Morshed Alam Dec 2020

Bayesian Modeling For Longitudinal Count Data: Applications In Biomedical Research, Morshed Alam

Theses & Dissertations

Biomedical count data such as the number of seizures for epilepsy patients, number of new tumors at each visit or the number vomiting after each chemo-radiation for the cancer patients are common. Often these counts are measured longitudinally from patients or within clusters in multi-site trials. The Poisson and negative binomial models may not be adequate when data exhibit over or under-dispersion, respectively. On the contrary, a variety of dispersion conditions in count data can be captured by Conway-Maxwell Poisson (CMP) model.

This doctoral dissertation relegates to developing a statistical methodology to model longitudinal count data distributed as CMP via …

Development Of Local Drug Delivery Systems For Periodontal Disease, Yosif Hassan Almoshari May 2019

Development Of Local Drug Delivery Systems For Periodontal Disease, Yosif Hassan Almoshari

Theses & Dissertations

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease induced by complex interactions between the host immune system and pathogens that affect the integrity of teeth-supporting tissues. To prevent disease progression and thus preserve the alveolar bone structure, simultaneous anti-inflammatory and osteogenic intervention is essential. Hence, simvastatin (SIM) and a glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta inhibitor (BIO) were selected as anti-inflammatory and osteogenic agents.

First, SIM is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor widely prescribed for hypercholesterolemia. It has been reported to ameliorate inflammation and promote osteogenesis. Its clinical applications on these potential secondary indications, however, have been hampered by its lack of osteotropicity and poor …
