Wave Optics In Scanning Electron Microscopy, Surya Kamal Sep 2021

Wave Optics In Scanning Electron Microscopy, Surya Kamal

Theses

Better quality imaging is often needed for all optical instruments including the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Inside the SEM, an electron beam is generated by applying a voltage to the electron gun. The electron beam propagates through the SEM column and illuminates the specimen with a small probe. Our research is oriented towards the end goal of obtaining better images by modeling the SEM column which contains the lens system needed for probe formation. This probe which scans the specimen to produce the final image is one of the pivotal factors which determines the fundamental resolution of a SEM. We …

Experimental Investigation Of Corrosion Of Coated Cast Iron Rotors In The Automotive Industry, Prabin Parajuli May 2020

Experimental Investigation Of Corrosion Of Coated Cast Iron Rotors In The Automotive Industry, Prabin Parajuli

Theses

Electric and hybrid vehicles uses regenerative braking, where application of the brake triggers the electric motor to work as a generator to produce electricity, which in turn charges the battery. This results in much less use of the friction brake, changing the corrosion and wear behavior of the rotor surface. There is a need for research on this topic, since fully electric or hybrid vehicles are replacing combustion engines due to concerns about global warming and climate change. Here the corrosion behavior of coated cast iron vehicle rotors in 3.5wt% NaCl is studied. The corrosion study has been performed using …

Alkali Activated Slag Characterization By Scanning Electron Microscopy And X-Ray Microanalysis, Najat A. Alharbi Apr 2018

Alkali Activated Slag Characterization By Scanning Electron Microscopy And X-Ray Microanalysis, Najat A. Alharbi

Theses

Blast furnace slag is a non-metallic byproduct generated by the production of iron and steel in a blast furnace at temperatures in the range of 1400°-1600° C. The alkali activation of blast furnace slag has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of cementitious materials and to be applied in geographic zones where weather is a factor that negatively affects performance of materials based on Ordinary Portland Cement. Alkali-activated blast furnace slag cements have been studied since the 1930s due to its high compressive strength; they can exceed 100 MPa in 28 days. The low Ca/Si ratio in slag improves …

Modification And Utilization Of Nanoporous Gold For Loading And Release Of Drugs, Ibtisam Mohammed Al-Badri Nov 2016

Modification And Utilization Of Nanoporous Gold For Loading And Release Of Drugs, Ibtisam Mohammed Al-Badri

Theses

Nanoporous gold (np-Au) is a sponge-like structure of gold, which can be created by removing the less noble element from the precursor alloy, most typically silver or copper, using different chemical or electrochemical methods. It consists of interconnected ligaments and gaps between the ligaments, whose width can range from a few nanometers to a few hundreds of nanometers, creating a high surface area-to-volume ratio. Due to its many important properties (e.g., conductivity, high surface area-to-volume ratio, plasmonic response, biocompatibility, chemically inertness, and physically robustness), np-Au is suitable for different types of applications, including as a transducer for biosensors, in catalysis, …
