Student Satisfaction With A Community College's Counseling Services: Gender And Race Differences, Carla Denise Noto

Theses

Forty-five community college students (8 males and 37 females) were surveyed to determine their level of satisfaction with counseling services offered at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley. The three areas of counseling explored were academic counseling, career counseling, and personal counseling. Results indicated that neither the gender of the student n or the ethnic group the student belonged to related to the level of satisfaction he/she received from any of the three areas of counseling. Academic counseling was found to have the highest satisfaction rankings and Personal counseling was found to have the lowest. ii

Moving Toward Reconciliation, Paula Boronell Nov 1995

Moving Toward Reconciliation, Paula Boronell

Theses

My thesis concept had originally been concerned with gender role playing and the effect this role playing has on the individual. As the work progressed, however, my original concept slowly evolved into something more personal. "Moving Towards Reconciliation" was really about resolving my own questions, and being reconciled with the answers I found. This thesis report describes the route which took me from abstract concept to a personal reconciliation.

State Anxiety Factors With Road Race Competitors, Walter Clayton Davis Sep 1995

State Anxiety Factors With Road Race Competitors, Walter Clayton Davis

Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine any significant relationships between a variety of factors and state anxiety using road race athletes. The factors examined were age, years of racing, expectations, finishing place, and accuracy of expected finish. Sixty eight subjects completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), an instrument that measures cognitive state anxiety, somatic state anxiety, and self confidence in a sports setting. Results indicate no significant relationships of gender, distance raced, and accuracy of pre-race expectations with CSAI-2 scores of the runners. Cognitive state anxiety was found to correlate to pre-race expectations (-.27). Self confidence correlated …

The Effect Of Image Content On Color Difference Perceptibility, Susan Farnand Sep 1995

The Effect Of Image Content On Color Difference Perceptibility, Susan Farnand

Theses

Considerable work has been conducted regarding the perceptibility of color differences for simple images such as uniform color patches. From this work comes such tools as the MacAdam ellipses. Less is known regarding color difference perceptibility when complex images are involved. However, the proliferation of desktop publishing equipment and the increasingly technically elegant accompanying software makes questions around this topic both more facile and more relevant to study. The information that could be gleaned may be useful for the design of color printer algorithms or other imaging systems. The objective of this research was to examine the impact of image …

Effects Of Ergonomic Worksite Changes On Risks For Cumulative Trauma Disorders Of The Upper Body In An Assembly And Press Operation Job, David B. Mahone May 1995

Effects Of Ergonomic Worksite Changes On Risks For Cumulative Trauma Disorders Of The Upper Body In An Assembly And Press Operation Job, David B. Mahone

Theses

Cumulative trauma of the upper body is associated with a variety of individual and job factors. An effort to optimize the human-hardware interface to minimize cumulative trauma is favored. Workers in a set of jobs had complained about hand/wrist and shoulder discomfort. One job was selected for testing alternate machine controls and worksite layout. Electromyography was used to test muscle activity, and photogoniometry was used to measure posture.

For the group of ten worker-subjects, statistically significant decreases in hand/wrist and shoulder muscle activity were found. A marginal, but significant increase in neck muscle activity was also found. When one subject …

A Study Of The Effects Of Child Sexual Abuse, Treatment, And Interventions, Catherine P. Coyle May 1995

A Study Of The Effects Of Child Sexual Abuse, Treatment, And Interventions, Catherine P. Coyle

Theses

The last two decades have seen the topic of child sexual abuse emerge from an issue that was considered rare, or at least uncommon, to one currently viewed as a leading concern of mental health professionals. Public reaction to incest and sexual abuse has changed from one of disbelief to one of active concern. Public awareness and education about the issue of child sexual abuse has developed into a critical area of concern.

Sexual abuse of children is now recognized as a serious mental health problem, both because it is so widespread, and because of increasing evidence of its traumatic …

Heart Rate Variability Studies On Ambulatory Subjects Using Ekg Derived Respiration, Xiaorui Tang Jan 1995

Heart Rate Variability Studies On Ambulatory Subjects Using Ekg Derived Respiration, Xiaorui Tang

Theses

Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) provides a powerful non-invasive too] for exploring the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic components of the autonomic nervous system. In the spectrum of HRV, there are three distinct peaks. The high frequency (HF) band (0.15 to 0.4 Hz) is correlated with parasympathetic activity and this is the band of interest 'in the study.

Two OTOUPS Of SL113jeCtS were considered in this work, stroke survivors and subjects performing an oral presentation in front of an audience. Data were collected with a Holter monitor to allow for ambulatory recording. Respiration was derived from the …

Time Domain And Frequency Domain Analysis Of Myoelectric Signals During Muscle Fatigue, Rakesh M. Maniar Jan 1995

Time Domain And Frequency Domain Analysis Of Myoelectric Signals During Muscle Fatigue, Rakesh M. Maniar

Theses

Spectral analysis of the EMG signal is a useful tool for studying the complex phenomena of fatigue. The spectral parameters of mean frequency and median frequency, and the time domain parameter of root mean square have been used to measure localized fatigue.

The normal values of median frequency and its decline with fatigue have not as yet been determined in healthy subjects. This should be done in order to apply spectral analysis for clinical evaluations of abnormal populations. Normal median frequency values and its slope were established in this work for the upper extremity muscles of biceps, triceps and deltoid …

Preoperative Risk Assessment For Cardiac Surgery Using Piecewise Linear Regression Model, Arifa Zafar Jan 1995

Preoperative Risk Assessment For Cardiac Surgery Using Piecewise Linear Regression Model, Arifa Zafar

Theses

In the present climate of quality assurance policies, rigorous requirements for informed consent, and a constantly changing patient population, a system of preoperative risk assignment for cardiovascular surgery was developed to monitor and evaluate surgical outcomes. The goal of this work is to estimate the preoperative risk associated with cardiac bypass surgery for patients in different risk categories. These risk categories are determined by the Parsonnet model which is based upon studying the severity of illness. The Parsonnet model assigns a risk value to a range of risk factors consisting of patient attributes and disease parameters. The aggregate of these …

This study attempts to assess whether or not attitudes and values offour-year hospitality program students change as a result of the learning processes in their curricula. A 40 item questionnaire was developed and used to survey the three populations in the study; freshmen and seniors of a four-year hospitality management program and hotel general managers who have hired Co-op students and graduates from the program. The survey results were compared between the groups as follows: Freshmen …

The Identification Of Work-Environment Factors Effecting Dysfunctional Employee Turnover At A Resort Property: A Case Study, Christopher Menna Jan 1995

The Identification Of Work-Environment Factors Effecting Dysfunctional Employee Turnover At A Resort Property: A Case Study, Christopher Menna

Theses

The purpose of this study is to identify a list of work-environment factors present at a resort property that participant employees feel effect employee turnover, and consequently interfere with good customer service. This was accomplished through extensive in-depth interviews conducted with 28 systematically selected employees from all departments of the property studied. The interview schedule utilized was primarily unstructured to provide the respondents with the greatest latitude in expressing their impressions. The results of the interviews revealed specific patterns of responses relating only to the various departments of the participants. The results also revealed two general patterns of responses present …

A Decision Making Environment The Healthcare Industry, Terry Ovenshire Jan 1995

A Decision Making Environment The Healthcare Industry, Terry Ovenshire

Theses

This was a pilot study on the decision making environments in the health care industry. A critical incident questionnaire which was developed by Boone & Kilmann (1988) and later used by Janet Barnard (1992) in her research "Decision Environments of Small Firms" was adapted. The questionnaires were sent to 201 employees at the facility in the first sampling. A response of almost 50% was received, but the food service department was only represented by 3 respondents. It was decided that a second sampling would be sent to that department to assure a large enough set of respondents to use as …

The Effects Of Gender, National Origin, Purpose Of Travel, Length Of Stay And Seasonality On Guest's Satisfaction Levels, Brenda Cruz Valentin Jan 1995

The Effects Of Gender, National Origin, Purpose Of Travel, Length Of Stay And Seasonality On Guest's Satisfaction Levels, Brenda Cruz Valentin

Theses

This study focuses on identifying the effects of customer's gender, national origin, purpose of travel, length of stay, and seasonality on their perception of service at an international hotel in the Caribbean.

Assessing customer's expectations through collection and analysis of comment cards are critical to assure a high quality delivery of service. Therefore, the problem is that statistical analysis and effective use of customer comment cards, which are designed to identify potential complaining patterns in order to improve service for an international hotel, does not occur.

This study involved an analysis of a sample of 57.2% out of a total …

Rational Bias And Its Relationship To The Glass Ceiling, Kelly A. Levengood Jan 1995

Rational Bias And Its Relationship To The Glass Ceiling, Kelly A. Levengood

Theses

This thesis will focus on the affect of rational bias to the "glass ceiling." Research has suggested that a "glass ceiling" exists in corporate America . It attributes the lack of women in middle and upper management to the "glass ceiling."

Some theorists acknowledge that not all women want to be at the top in management due to the "mommy track" or general lack of interest for that position. However, for those women who desire a position in upper management, some theorists believe women are blocked from upper management positions by the "old boys network" . . . the "glass …

The Impact Of Year-Round School On Stress In Elementary School Teachers, Henriette Ingeborg Baker Jan 1995

A measure of teacher stress, the Teacher stress Inventory (TSI), was administered to the teachers after they had completed one-half of the school year. Analysis of the data revealed that there was no significant difference in stress levels between the year-round teachers and the teachers on the traditional schedule. Stress levels were in the …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Alcoholism And Self-Esteem, Judy A. Astel Jan 1995

A Study Of The Relationship Between Alcoholism And Self-Esteem, Judy A. Astel

Theses

The relationship between the length of sobriety in the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and self-esteem level was examined for 27 recovering alcoholics. Participants included L3 male and 14 female members of AA who volunteered to complete the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and a cover/survey letter that contained demographic questions. Where it was predicted that there would be no relationship between length of sobriety and self-esteem level, it was found that there was a positive relationship between the two for the total group and the female group. That is, where length of time sober in AA increased, the alcoholic's …

The Investigation Of The Needs Of Contemporary Woman And Development Of The Business Plan For Time For You, Ltd., Paula P. Macmann

Theses

This project focuses on the changing roles - and subsequent needs - of today's women.

Society slowly adapts to change; consequently, the responses to women's needs result in some being met, some only being addressed while others are completely ignored.

Still. changes in society have afforded unique opportunities for today's woman. Associated with these opportunities comes challenges. Segments of society continue to hold gender based stereotypical beliefs limiting women to traditional roles. But a new version of women's potential has emerged in the last quarter century. These new attitudes open up a more expanded scope of roles. They also result …
