Before becoming a serious woodworker, I was preoccupied with other art forms, primarily contemporary poetry and fiction. Film, sculpture, painting, music, and performance also seemed to be powerful genres in which the imagination could manifest itself most directly, and influence human lives with a magical force. As an undergraduate in the early 1970's, I received a degree in literature. At that time the poetry readings I attended in New York City were as important as the books and ideas to which I was exposed in a progressive classroom situation. This work deals with two separate aspects of the chemistry of phenolic compounds. In the first section a study is reported of aryl alkyl ether synthesis using as a standard nucleophile catechol anion and as electrophilic species a range of alkyl halides. The reactions involved constituted good routes to a number of catechol mono- and di-alkyl catechol ethers. The reaction were studied systematically and key reactivity factors such as steric effects and the influence of changing alkyl chain lengths were evaluated. The high-boiling colorless products were characterize by elemental analysis, H NMR and IR spectra. As a guide to understanding …

The linearity of image transfer is analyzed for a high resolution electrophotographic film and electrodeveloper combination. The extent of nonlinearities introduced upon transfer through the photoconduction and electrodevelopment stages is conceptualized in terms of inherent physical mechanisms. A spectral shift in narrow band exposing radiation is used to test significance of exponential absorption on linearity of photoconduction transfer. Variations in development electrode spacing and development time test for nonlinearity induced by temporal and spatial frequency dependent depletion of electrodeveloper particles. As the electrophotographic film employed in the test exhibited low absorption coefficients in all spectral bands, exponential absorption of exposing …

A comparison study was conducted to evaluate limitations of several atmospheric calibration techniques, including: Angular, Profile, and spectrally corrected and uncorrected LOWTRAN. To accomplish this, a thermal mapper was flown over a shoreline where water surface temperatures were measured coincidentally by a ground crew. The thermogram derived observed radiances were corrected using each of the atmospheric calibration methods so that ground surface temperatures could be predicted. The R.M.S. errors of these ground temperature predictions indicated that all calibration techniques yielded similar results at 1000-foot altitude. The error remained constant for the Profile and LOWTRAN calibration techniques to 6000-foot altitude, but …

A comparison study for the methods of obtaining the MTF of optical systems was performed. It is demonstrated that non-Fourier methods are as good predictors of the MTF as are the Fourier methods. A new technique based on the moment theorem is introduced and is found to be a good predictor. A computer algorithm has been written to perform all the necessary operations.

This paper reports on the radiation heat transfer from the melt in a Czochralski crystal growing furnace in the presence of a radiation shield The change of radiation heat transfer effects three basic areas, the cooling rate of the crystal, the bulk flow and the bulk temperature of the melt. The shield is installed above the melt to inhibit the heat transfer from the melt to the cooling crystal, allowing the crystal to grow 40% faster. A literature review is provided concerning the subject of radiative heat transfer interactions of real molecular gases with the additional modes of heat transfer, conduction and convection, in laminar and turbulent flow in circular pipes. The review is composed of four sections. Section 1 provides basic heat transfer theory for laminar and turbulent flow in circular pipes. The differential equations for conservation of mass, momentum, and energy are briefly developed. A mathematical model to predict temperature profiles and coking of crude oil in furnace tubes is presented. The model assumes that the coking mechanism is due to a reaction in the laminar sublayer, whose rate depends upon the temperature profile. That profile is obtained by a numerical solution of the appropriate transport equations, with velocity profiles that may be laminar or turbulent, and including the temperature dependence of the crude oil properties. In addition, velocity and temperature profiles were adjusted when necessary to ensure closure of the heat and material balances. As a by-product of this study, a correction was …

Biological removal of phenol up to 600 ppm and 2,6-dichlorophenol up to 20 ppm was studied in a well aerated fill-and-draw reactor of 41 capacity at 26 C using an activated sludge obtained from the municipal treatment plant in Livingston, N.J. Experimental evaluation of kinetic parameters showed that biodegradation of both phenol and 2,6-DCP followed zero-order kinetics. As expected, the lag time for both compounds was considerably reduced when acclimated sludge was used. However, the metabolism of 2,6-DCP was very slow even for preacclimated sludge, requiring about 36 hours to degrade only 15 ppm.. This was markedly improved by the …

Lewis and Matheson, in the early 1930's, developed a manual calculation technique for the solution of multicomponent distillation problems. The object of this study was to see if there would be any advantage to using the Lewis-Matheson method, once incorporated onto a computer, over current multicomponent distillation solution techniques. The immediate advantage of using the L-M technique is that it requires fewer preliminary calculations than other computer methods. It was found that the L-M technique uses about half the execution time of a typical Newton-Raphson program, while using only one tenth the computer core (memory). This was not intended to …

Rapid access processing is a photographic processing method that combines high temperature processing and high energy developing agents to obtain very short induction periods, and thus, reduced processing times. In order to obtain maximum quality from the process, the rapid access halftone percent dot areas must be correctly evaluated according to established aim points. Traditional evaluation methods, either visual or instrumental, produce errors. These errors are the partial result of the unique dot characteristics of the process. An empirical approach to measuring and predicting the effects of target scene shadows on image interpretability is described. A simulated aerial imagery data base is utilized to quantify image interpretability and computed graphics form the basis of the predictor algorithms. A technique to quantify the relative visibilities of individual line segment images is developed. Three categories of predictors are proposed and utilize line segment visibility to predict image interpretability. The success of the algorithms are tested using regression analysis procedures.

This thesis is a presentation of four grid designs. They are woven on a multi-harness loom and utilize a strip-weaving technique. The designs are based on a series of colors, and consist of three grid elements; the line, the square and the rectangle. The relationship between second order stochastic processes and coherent power spectra are explored for developed grain size frequency distributions of silver halide emulsion/developer combinations. Although Wiener spectra represent incoherent power spectra, the coherent case has been unresolved due to the difficulty of filtering the optical system effect. The emulsion plates were exposed with a uniform irradiance distribution from an incoherent tungsten source to create a series of uniform density samples. A prototype design for a human powered automatic transmission intended for use on an ordinary touring bicycle is presented. The transmission is intended to automatically adjust the gearing of the bicycle to maintain an optimum pedal force, regardless of the current riding conditions. Therefore, the transmission eliminates the need for the cyclist to manually adjust the bicycle gearing. The entire transmission is a self-contained unit designed to bolt onto the rear wheel of an otherwise unmodified 27-inch bicycle. The transmission combines a unique adaptation of a commercially popular continuously variable traction drive with a totally mechanical integral feedback controller. The …
