Characterization Of A Contact Screen System As Used In The Graphic Arts, Arthur Kliman
Characterization Of A Contact Screen System As Used In The Graphic Arts, Arthur Kliman
Theses
Fractional image areas based on measured transmittance distributions of contact screens having screen frequencies of 50 - 150 lines/inch* (1.95 - 4.66 cycles/mm) are compared to measured fractional image areas produced on lithographic film using the same contact screens. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the lithographic film is calculated for spatial frequency inputs of 1.95 - 12.00 cycles/mm. Based on these experiments, a mathematical model was developed to describe how the fractional image area of a halftone is dependent on spatial frequency of the contact screen, predicted fractional image area based on the screen ' s transmittance distribution, and …

Municipal Point Source Pollution In The Hackensack Meadowlands Estuary, Alfonso Augustine Hernandez
Municipal Point Source Pollution In The Hackensack Meadowlands Estuary, Alfonso Augustine Hernandez
Theses
A study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of various sewage treatment facilities in the Hackensack Meadowlands District. The study dealt with overall plant efficiencies based on percent removals of suspended solids and Biochemical Oxygen Demand although other parameters were also included.
Samples for this study were obtained from the inlet and outlet channels of the individual plants. The parameters studied were: Suspended Solids, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Total Nitrogen, Nitrate-Nitrite Compounds, Total Organic Carbon, Orthophosphate-P, Total Oxygen Demand and Fecal Coliform. Results obtained were averaged so as to collectively represent wet and dry weather conditions.
The results indicate that most …
So2-Scrubber Technology : Double Alkali Mode, Krishna K. Rao
So2-Scrubber Technology : Double Alkali Mode, Krishna K. Rao
Theses
Double alkali (D/A) processes for the desulfurization of flue gases occupy an increasingly important role in applied technology.
D/A processes involve two steps, namely, scrubbing and regeneration. In the scrubbing step, the alkali (Na2SO3) reacts with SO2. In the regeneration step the acid formed, NaHSO3, reacts with an alkali to regenerate Na2SO3.
This study was focused on the regeneration step. Regenerants investigated were slurries of lime and limestone. The major factors studied were reactor configuration and mixing patterns.
These systems were investigated in a batch, backmix, and plug-flow …

The Fulfillment Of Love And Belongingness Needs Among Single Parents, Anne Roemer Bannes
The Fulfillment Of Love And Belongingness Needs Among Single Parents, Anne Roemer Bannes
Theses
The present study investigates the differences between single parents and married parents regarding (a) to what extent they fulfill their love and belongingness needs , and (b) what sources they enlist for this fulfillment. Nine hypotheses are tested using 50 subjects who were given a questionnaire developed for this study. No differences are found between married parents and single parents in the fulfillment of their needs . Differences are found in the sources they enlist for the fulfillment of their need for love, but no differences are found between groups for sources of fulfillment of their need for belonging. It …
The Multiple Losses Of Housewives Who Become Widowed, Emily Carton
The Multiple Losses Of Housewives Who Become Widowed, Emily Carton
Theses
Housewives who become widowed suffer from the loss of two roles - that of wife and worker. Since housework is not traditionally considered employment, these women are not given equivalent financial or emotional support that one would give retirees. This paper will define housework as an occupational identity and will examine the social and financial similarities between the housewife who becomes widowed and the individual who is forced to retire from long term employment.

Laser Imaging With A Holographically Produced Lens, Eric Schwartz
Laser Imaging With A Holographically Produced Lens, Eric Schwartz
Theses
A process is outlined by which a hologram has been produced for use as an imaging device in a laser machining apparatus. Such a hologram has been termed a hololens. The hololens was initially produced by recording the interference between a coherent plane reference wave and an object wave which was produced by passing a plane wave through a transparency. The recording film was positioned at Brewster's angle and the laser light was polarized normal to the surface of the glass plate substrate in order to reduce optical noise caused by interference between the recording beams and their reflections. This …

Lanthanide Shift Reagents Involving Crown Ethers, David J. Long
Lanthanide Shift Reagents Involving Crown Ethers, David J. Long
Theses
Complexes between lanthanide nitrates and the cyclic polyethers 18-crown-6 and dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 have been synthesized; the reactions occur rapidly and in high yield. The crown ether-salt complexes have been characterized by melting point, infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry, conduct anee ana 1 ysis, and nuc1ear magnetic resona nee spectrometry. NMR sp ctra of uncomplexed and complexed crown ethers were identical; I tt'le uncomplexed salts were more soluble in NMR solvents than were the complexes. In most cases the crown ether-salt complexes are usable shift reagents and induce greater shifts than do the uncomplexed lanthanide salts in both proton and carbon magnetic resonance …

The Settling Of Particles In A Square Contained Medium, Richard S. Matyas
The Settling Of Particles In A Square Contained Medium, Richard S. Matyas
Theses
Stokes' Law, has been standardly utilized to calculate the terminal velocity of falling particles. However, the limitation of Stokes' Law is that it does not take into account the container walls and their resulting drag forces. Extensive work with additional drag due to cylindrical container walls has been examined by many investigators. The classical and earliest is the well know Ladenburg Correction which cannot be utilized with non-cylindrical containers. This experimental thesis examines the analog of the Ladenburg relationship for a square container. This experimental thesis was undertaken to experimentally determine the value of the constant K1 for a …
The Separation Of Proteins Via Parametric Pumping And Ion Exchange, Paul Albert Falcon
The Separation Of Proteins Via Parametric Pumping And Ion Exchange, Paul Albert Falcon
Theses
A pH parametric pump, coupled with ion exchange, was used in an experimental investigation to separate a protein-water binary mixture. The model system consisted of a hemoglobin-water binary mixture. A pH gradient throughout the parametric pumping column was sustained with the use of hollow fiber devices incorporating phosphate buffer circulation.
Data is presented for both batch and semi-continuous recuperative mode pH parametric pumping. Continuous pH parametric pumping for protein isolation has also been envisioned.
No attempt has been made to optimize this newly devel-oped process; however, certain parameters are suspected of controlling separation, including buffer concentration, half cycle time, packed …
