A Case Study Of Value Streams And Lean Implementation For A Small Print Shop, Alexis Austin Apr 2013

A Case Study Of Value Streams And Lean Implementation For A Small Print Shop, Alexis Austin

Theses

The growing use of portable Internet devices (smart phones, iPads, laptops, etc.) has caused a huge shift toward digital distribution of content over traditional print processes. Poor economic conditions have contributed to increased customer price sensitivity and higher costs of goods involved in printing. These factors have changed demand for traditional printed products. Many printers have been unable to adapt to the new market environment, leading to dwindling profit margins and thousands of shop closures. Many strategies have been touted as the "best" way to stay profitable in the new market environment, including value-added services, new machinery, and software packages. …

Many mid-size printing companies don't have rigid training programs for the white collar side of their business. Many times new hires are hired based …

A Guide To Computer-Based Training For The Graphic Arts Industry, David E. Pease May 1992

A Guide To Computer-Based Training For The Graphic Arts Industry, David E. Pease

Theses

Industry in the United States is facing one of the greatest hurdles of all time, that of retraining its work force. The printing industry, in particular, faces a continuing lack of experienced and knowledgeable people. It has begun cooperative efforts to retrain workers in the basic skills needed to run a printing operation. Subjects like basic math, accounting, writing, and sciences round out the curriculum. Also on the scene are entrepreneurial training firms. Off-site training typically goes for $250-350 per person per day; the on-site instruction goes for $400 and up. And then there are options like computer-based tutorials. A …

A Survey Of Quality Awareness Within The Commercial Printing Industry, Craig Eric Veconi May 1989

A Survey Of Quality Awareness Within The Commercial Printing Industry, Craig Eric Veconi

Theses

Quality issues are receiving increasing attention from many industries. The commercial printing industry is showing similar concern. Quality is often used as a marketing tool. This thesis surveys the top management of American commercial printing companies on their awareness of, practice of, and benefit from currently recognized quality control concepts and methods. The National Association of Printers and Lithographers assisted in the survey by providing design and mailing services. The survey mailing went to the membership of N.A.P.L. and to an additional fifteen hundred commercial printing companies. The responses to this survey were compared to similar surveys conducted in 1987 …

A Study On The Relationship Of Dark Reaction Of Diazo And Photopolymer Presensitized, Negative Working, Lithographic Plates With Temperature Relative Humidity, And Time, Kannan Adityan Sep 1986

A Study On The Relationship Of Dark Reaction Of Diazo And Photopolymer Presensitized, Negative Working, Lithographic Plates With Temperature Relative Humidity, And Time, Kannan Adityan

Theses

Dark reaction is a condition in which the plate acts as if it is exposed to a low level of active light, even though it is being stored in the dark. The Stouffer scale or the sensitivity guide is used to measure this dark reaction which takes place also as a result of high temperature and relative humidity. If there is much dark reaction taking place, more solid steps will show up on a negative working plate. For the purpose of this experiment diazo and photopolymer presensitised, negative working, lithographic plates were chosen. These plates were cut into small sections …

A Study To Eliminate Moire Patterns Produced In Color Separations When Scanning Polachrome Cs Transparency Film On The Hell Dc-300 B/L Laser Scanner, Edwin Parker Price Mar 1985

A Study To Eliminate Moire Patterns Produced In Color Separations When Scanning Polachrome Cs Transparency Film On The Hell Dc-300 B/L Laser Scanner, Edwin Parker Price

Theses

The Polaroid Corporation, in May of 1983, introduced Polachrome CS color transparency film and a new process called the Autoprocess system. This system offers the convenience of obtaining instant color transparencies in about three minutes. The film has excellent projection and viewing characteristics. The product was designed to have its largest market with professional photographers. Polachrome's construction creates problems for the printer in that moire patterns occur during the separation process. This study gives a short background for both additive color screen films and dye layer films, and a comparison is made to help the reader understand the problems with …

A Survey Of Book Printing In The Lagos Area With Recommendations For Meeting The Need Of Universal Primary Education In Nigeria, Agbo Ella

Theses

With the sudden introduction of Universal Primary Education in Nigeria, the demand for books went up by 60%. This demand will be made acute in the 1979/80 academic year when U.P.E. is made compulsory for all school age children. A faster, quicker method of composition, camera work, stripping and platemaking, press work, bindery operation, and a good production control will increase the printers' output to meet the increased demand. The methodology of this study was based on information gathering through personal interviews. The production personnel in the book printing companies in Nigeria were asked and responded to the questions that …
