What we can learn can have a major impact on what and how we teach our young students, especially deaf - students whose language development may be delayed. Victor, the Wild Boy of Aveyron, a famous feral child, is the focus of this study. He was discovered in the French wilderness in 1800, after three to eight years alone in the forest. After …

The average deaf 18-year-old graduates with approximately a fourth grade reading level (Traxler, 2000). Therefore, it is imperative for teachers to effectively choose appropriate literature for deaf learners to help them interact more successfully with text. Through in-depth interviews, detailed information was collected from five deaf adults holding Ph. D. degrees and working in the field of education regarding their learning-to-read experiences. Journal Writing Within Deaf Education, Clare Cassidy Sep 2005

Journal Writing Within Deaf Education, Clare Cassidy

Theses

Writing has generally always been a source of resentment, aversion and unhappiness for deaf people. It shouldn't be. When one mentions an English writing course, one would involuntarily envision a long class of boring lectures on parts of speech, sentence structures and know their written paper will return all bloody from those red markers. This has to change, the unconscious fear of English within Deaf people affects their academic, personal and social growth.

Mathematics: It's All About Language, Elizabeth Barrett Sep 2005

Mathematics: It's All About Language, Elizabeth Barrett

Theses

Not many years ago, Hillegeist and Epstein, from Gallaudet University, wrote that 'while there is no question that the increase in difficulty of the mathematical concepts is an important factor in mathematical comprehension and there seems to exist an effect on comprehension specifically related to language. The special role of language in mathematics is a factor in the educational success of deaf students. However, they add that at this point (1987), the nature of the language effect is not completely clear. (Hillegeist&Epstein, 1987). Deaf students face barriers in the mainstream that are often overlooked by teachers and parents. This review consolidates and highlights the …

Alcohol Awareness Education In The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Classroom, Julie Wainman

Furthermore, it has been indicated that there is a need for further study focusing on alcohol abuse by deaf adolescents and its contributing factors. There is also a need to recognize that the deaf population has been mostly overlooked in terms of understanding that they are at-risk and changes need to …
