Control Of A Four-Color Lithographic Press By Monitoring The Hue Consistency Of The Reproduction With A Densitometer, Chikashi Hashimoto Dec 1979

Control Of A Four-Color Lithographic Press By Monitoring The Hue Consistency Of The Reproduction With A Densitometer, Chikashi Hashimoto

Theses

The purpose of this study was to establish a reliable control method to maintain the visual hue consistency of "critical colors" on a four-color lithographic press. The term "critical colors" indicates those colors which are deemed by the customer or pressman to be important for a particular job and will require special attention to maintain their hue consistency. It was hypothesized that a densitometer, which automatically computes hue error and grayness using the Preucil method, could be used to measure critical colors and maintain their computed hue consistency. In order to analyze the effect of the control method monitoring hue …

Adsorption Capabilities Of Adsorbents For Selected Toxic Air Pollutants, Richard Michael Vaccaro Oct 1979

Adsorption Capabilities Of Adsorbents For Selected Toxic Air Pollutants, Richard Michael Vaccaro

Theses

The relative adsorption capacities of seven toxic, volatile organic air pollutants of either proven or suspected carcinogenic potential were tested on various adsorbents. Tests were run at flow velocities similar to those set in field sampling. This allows for extrapolation of test results to actual ambient air sampling systems. Experimentation was performed using a gas chromatograph (G.C.) equipped with a flame ionization detector. Sample introduction was carried out using the "displacement method" where the sample is introduced to the adsorbent cartridge as a plug.

Incipient elution volumes (VN), normalized for bulk adsorbent packing volume, were obtained at various …

Studies On The Lith Development Of A Silver Iodobromide Emulsion, Larry Zurbrick Oct 1979

Studies On The Lith Development Of A Silver Iodobromide Emulsion, Larry Zurbrick

Theses

The lithographic development of a silver iodobromide emulsion with thiocyanate substituted for bromide in a lith developer formulation showed differences in behavior with regard to induction time and maximum rate of development at equal levels of normality. An experiment was designed with development time, halide concentration, and exposure level as the variables with maximum rate of development, time to reach 0.20 optical density (induction time), and slope at 0.40 optical density as the response parameters. The maximum rate of development with the developer containing bromide was found to be significantly dependent upon exposure level and not significantly dependent upon bromide …

Electric Field Enhancement Of Efficiency In Autoradiographic Exposures, Harvey Smith Oct 1979

Electric Field Enhancement Of Efficiency In Autoradiographic Exposures, Harvey Smith

Theses

An external electric field was applied during autoradiographic exposures in an attempt to influence the path length and trajectory of image forming beta particles. Various techniques were employed to maximize the electric field applied. No evidence was found for increases in efficiency of image formation within the receiving emulsion, up to a field strength of 7 x 10 volts/cm.

The Effect Of Photographic Reducers In Autoradiographic Intensification Method For Image Recovery Of Incorrectly Exposed Radiographs, Donald Vachon

Theses

Autoradiographic image intensification methods for recovering the images of underexposed step wedges, resolution targets and radiographs were investigated. The fog level of the intensified image was decreased by treating the film in a subproportional photographic reducer (mixture of potassium ferricyanide and sodium thiosulfate) prior to activation with S-35 thiourea. The fog level of intensified images of a step wedge decreased from a density of 1.32 to .12, the maximum contrast increased from 2.08 to 5.52, the relative speed increase calculated at 0.6 above fog level increased from 3.05 to 4.06 while resolution remained the same at 5.0 lines per millimeter.Radiographs …

Modulation Transfer Function Of Image Motion Due To Operator Vibration, Venkatraman Nagaswami Sep 1979

Modulation Transfer Function Of Image Motion Due To Operator Vibration, Venkatraman Nagaswami

Theses

The displacement path of a hand-held photographic camera is studied at low shutter speeds when operated by different observers. Using the Fourier method, the average power spectrum of hand vibration is obtained. The Modulation Transfer Function of image motion for an average observer at various exposure times is theoretically predicted.

The Role Of Reliability In The Publisher/Supplier Relationship In Textbook Production, Steven Brenner Aug 1979

The Role Of Reliability In The Publisher/Supplier Relationship In Textbook Production, Steven Brenner

Theses

Most publishers in the textbook publishing industry experience production delays. If the delays are serious it could result in a postponed publication date. The ramifications of a postponed publication date range from anxiety to the author and publisher to lost revenues. Most textbook publishers are required to have their new texts reviewed by adoption committies, therefore it is imperative that their books be ready by a certain date. There are many functions involved in the book making process. A delay in any one area may hold things up in other areas, thus compounding the situation. The purpose of this thesis …

Theses

This paper concentrates on an approach to enhance the social integration of learning- disabled students in regular classrooms. The chief problem is to design learning experiences which stimulate the development of social integration in mainstream programs. What effect does method of instruction have on positive affective states of learning- disabled students when mainstreamed?

After defining terms, the literature review includes studies on l)divergent questioning and its relationship to the thinking processes, 2)methods of instruction, 3)actual and perceived peer status of learning- disabled students in regular classrooms.

The research design will be experimental, using the classroom situation and primary students. The …

Continuous Fractionation Of Protein Mixtures By Ph-Parametric Pumping, Yuk-Wei Wong Jun 1979

Continuous Fractionation Of Protein Mixtures By Ph-Parametric Pumping, Yuk-Wei Wong

Theses

Continuous pH-parametric pumping separations of a haemoglobin - albumin - CM Separose system were experimentally investigated. The parapump system has a feed, containing the protein mixture to be separated, introduced alternately to the top and bottom of the chromatographic column. The top and bottom products are withdrawn from the apparatus during the bottom and top feed respectively. It is shown that under certain conditions the pH-driven parametric pump has the capacity for removal of a protein component from one product fraction and large enrichment in the other fraction. Moreover, the continuous process can be operated with a large feed throughput.

A Study Of The Effect Of Coating Variations On Tone Reproduction In The Association Products Plate, Mark Woodhouse Jun 1979

A Study Of The Effect Of Coating Variations On Tone Reproduction In The Association Products Plate, Mark Woodhouse

Theses

The halftone process is so much a part of printing today that it is often hard for printers to conceive of the notion of reproducing an image without a screen. Before the idea of breaking up an image into small dots came along however, printing was being done with lithographic methods which produced excellent results and the main concern of the theorist and technician was how to produce a more consistent, higher-quality, continuous tone image. Perhaps it is unfortunate that the advent of the halftone process distracted thought from this area to such a large degree, since it wasn't until …

Determination Of The Chemical Spread Function Of Kodak High Contrast Copy 5069 Emulsion, J.N.A. Laitre Jun 1979

Determination Of The Chemical Spread Function Of Kodak High Contrast Copy 5069 Emulsion, J.N.A. Laitre

Theses

A new procedure for obtaining the Chemical Spread Function of an emulsion-developer combination is discussed. This procedure consists of directly measuring the Optical Modulation Transfer Function (MTFO) by scanning the sinusoidal object irradiance distribution through the non-developed emulsion using a microdensitometer. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the processed emulsion is determined in the conventional manner. Then the Chemical Modulation Transfer Function (MTFC) is determined from the linear relationship: MTF = MTFC X MTFO. Once the MTFO is determined then the Spread Function is calculated using the Fourier Transform operator. Photographic systems are in general non-linear. However it is well …

Crown Ether Complexes Of Lanthanide Elements And Their Applications As Lanthanide Shift Reagents, Dale Decann Jun 1979

Crown Ether Complexes Of Lanthanide Elements And Their Applications As Lanthanide Shift Reagents, Dale Decann

Theses

A complex of the lanthanide salt, praseodymium nitrate, and the crown ether, 15-crown-5 has been isolated. The characterization of this complex by elemental analysis, melting point, H and C NMR, UV-visible and IR has indicated that the isolable solid compound is a 1:1 stoichiometric complex of the two reactants and is unsolvated. The application of this complex as a lanthanide shift reagent does not appear to be very feasible due to its insolubility in the non-polar solvents typically used in NMR experiments. Studies of the shifting ability of this complex as well as an inves tigation of the shifting ability …
