Dynamics Of Random Boolean Networks Governed By A Generalization Of Rule 22 Of Elementary Cellular Automata., Gary L. Beck

Student Work

This study considers a simple Boolean network with N nodes, each node's state at time t being determined by a certain number of k parent nodes. The network is analyzed when the connectivity k is fixed or variable. This is an extension of a model studied by Andrecut [4) who considered the dynamics of two stochastic coupled maps. Making use of the Boolean rule that is a generalization of Rule 22 of elementary cellular automata, a generalization of the formula for providing the probability of finding a node in state 1 at a time t is determined and used to …

Secularism In Turkey: The Perpetual Tipping Point: Key To The Future Or Prelude To Collapse, Peter R. Catalono Dec 2006

Secularism In Turkey: The Perpetual Tipping Point: Key To The Future Or Prelude To Collapse, Peter R. Catalono

Student Work

During the Cold War, the strategic significance of Turkey to the United States was clear: limit the expansion of the Soviet Union and maintain control of the Dardanelles. For the past decade and a half Western policymakers (US and European) have sent mixed signals to the Turks as to the importance of Turkey in the region, as a bridge between East and West, and in the World. Through eight decades of secular rule Turkey has shown that a democratic and secular state can exist within an almost entirely Muslim population. This thesis is made up of five main parts that …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Foreign-Born Population In Douglas Sarpy County, Nebraska – 2000, Leigh Anne L. Opitz

Student Work

For a city that was initially settled mostly by Europeans, the recent immigrants largely from non-European countries, arriving in a changed urban and societal setting, have altered the settlement geography of Omaha, Nebraska. Due to the economic attainment of many newcomers to the country, many immigrant groups are able to settle in more prosperous areas than previous immigrants, and therefore live further away from the inner city. The transportation infrastructure throughout the city has also improved since the beginning of the century, so immigrants are able widen their geographic mobility. The resulting settlement pattern of these new immigrants is therefore …

The Influence Of Feedlots On Epiphytic Lichen Species Composition And Cover In Eastern Nebraska., Margaret K. Reed

Student Work

Environmental factors greatly influence what species of lichens may occur in a particular region. Among these factors is nitrogen deposition in the form of ammonia as a result of feedlot operations, which may be manifested by an increase in bark pH. Epiphytic lichens on trees located in close proximity to medium and large-scale feedlot operations in Eastern Nebraska were analyzed for bark pH levels, species composition and species abundance, then compared to trees located at a greater distance from feedlot operations. Five sites were selected based on the presence of trees and accessibility. Ten trees from each site were selected …

Acquisition And Forensic Analysis Of Volatile Data Stores, Timothy Vidas Jul 2006

Acquisition And Forensic Analysis Of Volatile Data Stores, Timothy Vidas

Student Work

The advent of more witted threats against typical computer systems demonstrates a need for forensic analysis of memory-resident data in addition to the conventional static analysis common today. Some tools are starting to become available to duplicate various types of volatile data stores. Once the data store has been duplicated, current forensic procedures have no vector for extrapolating further information from the duplicate. This thesis is focused on providing the groundwork for performing forensic investigations on the data that is typically stored in a volatile data store, such as system RAM, while creating as small an impact as possible to …

A Compact Blimp Remote Sensing System For Analysis Of Environmental Change, Joann Sullivan

Student Work

The goal of this research is to demonstrate that developing an inexpensive compact blimp remote sensing system will allow for analysis and change detection of environmental characteristics over a small area. This system has scale and temporal advantages over existing aircraft and space platforms. The blimp remote sensing platform is capable of temporal resolutions of hours or days, while generating low cost, high spatial resolution images. This contrasts with satellite and fixed wing aircraft systems that are costly to purchase and operate, have low temporal resolutions, and may not provide adequate spatial resolution to investigate small scale phenomena. As designed, …

Logic Programming With Solution Preferences: A Declarative Method., Miao Liu May 2006

Logic Programming With Solution Preferences: A Declarative Method., Miao Liu

Student Work

Preference logic programming (PLP) is an extension of constraint logic programming for declaratively specifying problems requiring optimization or comparison and selection among alternative solutions to a query. PLP essentially separates the programming of a problem itself from the criteria specification of its solution selection. This thesis presents a declarative method of specifying and executing preference logic programs based on a tabled Prolog system. The method introduces a formal predicate mode declaration for designating certain predicates as optimization predicates, and stating the criteria for determining their optimal solutions via preference rules. A flexible mode declaration scheme is implemented in a tabled …
