Haydn's piano sonatas comprise a body of music which contains technical and stylistic demands designed to challenge intermediate piano students as well as advanced performers. This paper will address the historical background of the Sonata No. 59, including biographical information of Haydn's employment at the Esterhazy estate. Special attention to sonata form and performance practices of Sonata No. 59 will be included in this study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of musical and non­ musical presentations on vocabulary acquisition by English as second language (ESL) students. Subjects (N=16) were second-grade ESL students at Belle Ryan Elementary School of Omaha Public Schools. A pretest/posttest control group design was used. Subjects (N=8) in the control group received instruction in the language unit covering body parts vocabulary using a non-musical presentation conducted by the ESL classroom teacher. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether musical activities involving composition and conducting as stated by the National Standards for Arts Education could have a positive effect on elementary string students' note reading skills. The researcher specifically sought to determine whether the variables of grade level, gender, or race had an effect on the results. The study was conducted with 88 elementary string students from six elementary schools in the Omaha Public School system. The Bagatelles for harp were commissioned for the First International Harp Competition by the Hartt College of Music, University of Hartford in 1969. This paper uses a modified parametric analysis to discuss form, rhythm, melody, movement, sound and harmony in the three Bagatelles. The purpose of this analysis is to show the performing har ist the main compositional techniques Dello Joio used in each movement, and the analysis includes suggestions on performance practice. Odvin Hagen (1898-1967) influenced, established and maintained the Nation's second oldest established "A capella" choir. For Hagen, the elements of effectively organizing and administering a choral program that faced great obstacles is a great product of his lifelong work. Our aptitude to study his achievements and methods of obtaining desired outcomes can help present and future choral directors understand challenges facing their particular program.
