The years since the Civil War have witnessed vigorous efforts, not always successful, on the part of black and white Americans to elevate substantially the position of the black American in sociey. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the most dramatic and significant legislation, on a national level, which attacked segregation and discrimination, but it was not the first of its kind. The Civil Rights Act passed in 1964 contained many of the same provisions that had been enacted, or proposed but deleted, in a similar Civil Rights Act in 1875. The unleavened flat breads of ancient times, gr&ndmother0s old-fashioned home-made loaf, and today’s precision-controlled product have all vitally contributed to the world's food supplies and have made baking a basic economic activity in most societies. Despite the increased variety of foods now available, bread is still a staple in many diets. The designation of the most important agricultural crop in this nation would certainly and overwhelmingly find corn as the most vital to our agricultural economy. Corn is the leading crop in American agriculture both in terms of value and of the acreage grown each year. The peak acreage occurred in 1917, when 111 million acres were harvested for all purposes. During the decade of the 1950's the acreage of corn declined to about 80 million acres a year. The massive urban renewal and highway construction projects undertaken in recent years represent efforts to alleviate some of the problems of modern society. Urban renewal was dedicated to solving the social problems of the slums. Highway construction projects are efforts to solve problems of a more technical nature. Both have tended to leave in their wake other problems as least as difficult as those they were intended to solve. Urban renewal has demolished old slums and created new ones.
