Heroin Use In The Sgm Community, Zoe Savage, Angelia Bowers, Ryan Cassar, Olivia Phelps

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

The heroin epidemic continues to rip through the United States, drug overdose statistically being the leading cause of death among those under age 50 in 2018. We aim to focus our research on Sexual and Gender Minorities. In the U.S., many individuals initiate the use of some substances during adolescence. However, youth with SGM identities demonstrate disparities in substance use across multiple substances. The purpose of this study is to examine the ongoing prevalence of heroin usage among SGM communities and what can be done to provide adequate resources for those seeking treatment. Another idea for comparison our research hopes …

Internet, App-Based, And Casino Gambling, Steve Jacob, Samantha Rosenthal

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Technology-based gambling prevalence is not well understood since relevant questions are not included in health and disease surveillance studies. The current study sought to estimate the prevalence of internet-based and smartphone app-based gambling, along with casino gambling, in a sample of U.S. young adults and determine if gambling modality was associated with problem gambling symptoms or substance use. The 2022 Rhode Island Young Adult Survey included N=1,022 students between the ages of 18 to 25 years old who had lived in Rhode Island, with n=414 lifetime gamblers(40.5%) included in this study. Odds of gambling via a smartphone app and on …

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

The sexual and gender minority (SGM) population often faces discrimination in daily life, in healthcare, and in the workplace. This discrimination can cause negative health outcomes or harm career trajectory. This study examines the association between workplace discrimination and unemployment among sexual and gender minorities. This cross-sectional study of n=918 SGMs was conducted in 2022 with recruitment on Reddit. All individuals had to be 18 years of age or older, reside in the United States, and identify as a sexual and/or gender minority. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of unemployment among SGMs. A total of 28.43% were …

Uses Of Social Media And Depression Among College, Lilly Oliveira, Isabelle Arrington, S R. Rosenthal, Kelsey Gately, Jonathan K. Noel, Jadyn Torres

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Background: While studies suggest social media use may increase the risk of poor mental health, no studies have examined how the ways in which people use social media may play a role. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey of N=571 college students who own iPhones at a higher education institution in the northeast US was conducted in October 2022. Social media uses were assessed using the Social Networking Sites Usage & Needs Scale, measuring five different domains: diversion, cognitive, affective, personal integration, and social integration. Scores for all domains could range from 4-20, except social integration which could range from 5-25. …

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

According to research done by the Williams Institute, of the eight million LGBTQIA+ workers in the United States, nearly half of them have experienced unfair treatment at work at some point in their lives. The research presented was conducted to assess if there is a correlation between discrimination and depression and the impact on sexual and gender minorities’ (SGM) levels of self-compassion. SGMs include, but are not limited to, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, and queer. Data collection was conducted between February and March of 2022 using a quantitative cross-sectional digital survey and distributed through 107 …

Is Smartphone Time Or Social Media Time The Real Mental Health Problem For Young Adults?, Samantha Strong, S R. Rosenthal, Kelsey Gately, Jonathan Noel Jan 2024

Is Smartphone Time Or Social Media Time The Real Mental Health Problem For Young Adults?, Samantha Strong, S R. Rosenthal, Kelsey Gately, Jonathan Noel

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Background: While studies suggest smartphone screen time and social media time may increase the risk of poor mental health, most studies rely upon self-reports. Of the few that examine objectively measured time, they are all plagued by social desirability bias due to apps being installed on user’s phones prior to study initiation. This investigation avoids both of those methodological limitations to examine the role of smartphone and social media screen time in depression of college students.  Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey of college students who own iPhones at a higher education institution in the northeast US was conducted in October …

Adversity In Childhood And Resilience Among Sgms, Katie Owen, Nicholas Matta, Emma Lipinski Jan 2024

Adversity In Childhood And Resilience Among Sgms, Katie Owen, Nicholas Matta, Emma Lipinski

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

This study will analyze data from the Health of Sexual & Gender Minorities Study (HSGMS) to determine if there is an association between adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and resiliency in sexual and gender minorities (SGMs). Understanding the impact of childhood adversity on resilience is essential for developing effective interventions, promoting mental health, and creating supportive environments that empower SGMs to overcome the unique challenges that they often face. Our hypothesis is that there will be a negative correlation between adverse childhood experiences and resiliency among SGMs. The HSGMS is a quantitative, cross-sectional study conducted via a digital survey hosted on …

Partnered Status And Substance Misuse In Sgm, Carli Giacopelli, Jordan Suarez, Noella Ginolfi

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

The purpose of this research project is to examine the relationship between partner status and substance misuse. We believe that single persons have a higher likelihood of substance misuse compared to other relationship status. We focused specifically on binge drinking, cannabis misuse, and cigarette smoking. The partner status that we focus on are no partner (single), causal, monogamy, consensual non-monogamy, and non-consensual monogamy. The goal of this study is to see the association between different relationship statuses and different kinds of substance misuse, using a large nationwide sample of sexual and gender minority persons.

Pilot Peer Support For New Parents, Gina Orazietti

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

The project was a pilot to encourage Rhode Island’s health care system to expand follow-up services for new parents and promote expansion of occupational therapy (OT) services into postpartum care for new parents. This project aimed to better understand the benefits of receiving postpartum support in a peer-support setting, focusing specifically on occupational balance and well-being of the parents themselves. The pre/post-test design was utilized to evaluate participants’ attitudes or self-perception toward occupational balance and well-being relative to their involvement in the peer support groups by utilizing two Likert scales (Occupational Self-Assessment & Occupational Balance Questionnaire) and quality assurance questionnaires.

Results: 21.3% (N=280) of SGMs reported avoiding healthcare due to fear …

Is There Such Thing As The "Best" Running Shoe?, Andrew Peet Jan 2024

Is There Such Thing As The "Best" Running Shoe?, Andrew Peet

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Over the past semester, running has played a huge part in my social life here at Johnson and Wales. But although I have been a runner for years, this past semester stuck out the most. I constantly struggled with foot pain, and I decided to find if the problem was actually due to my shoes! Thankfully, I found that actually the problem was due to high arches, but this led me to question, are there shoes that could best fit me? Furthermore, if there are shoes designed to help one set of people, is there a “best” overall running shoe? …
