What Student And School Factors Increase Disadvantages In Special Needs Students? An Investigation Of Student Learning Growth In Students With Ieps, Julia Burdulis

Senior Theses and Projects

This study used public-use data from the National Center for Education Statistics’s (NCES) Early Childhood Longitudinal Program, Kindergarten Class of 2011 (ECLS-K: 2011) to examine math and reading learning growth from 4th to 5th grade among student with and without Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). When comparing the non-IEP student sample to the IEP student sample, a disproportionate number of minority students and students of low socioeconomic status were observed in the IEP student group. Among non-IEP students, significantly decreased score growth was predicted in students who were Black, Hispanic, had less highly educated parents, were from a low income household, …

Armenia’S Past, Present And Future -- Where It Was? Where It Is? Where Is It Going? -- Velvet Revolution 2018, Stella Tangiyan

Senior Theses and Projects

Armenia is a country with a long and complicated history. This project explores Armenia and the 2018 Armenian Velvet Revolution. In order to understand the Velvet Revolution, other cases of Color Revolutions should be explored -- the Bulldozer Revolution in Serbia, the Rose Revolution in Georgia, the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, and the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan. External factors that led Armenia and Armenians towards the Velvet Revolution are discussed. The three main focuses are Democratic Diffusion and Linkage/Leverage, the role of the West and Western NGOs, and the role of Russia when it comes to Armenia’s decision-making process. This …

Spectacular Imaginations Of The Sinking Island, Emma Schneck May 2020

Spectacular Imaginations Of The Sinking Island, Emma Schneck

Senior Theses and Projects

As entire island nations slip beneath rising seas, how can we reimagine a political future where the effects of climate change are already in full force? In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that there is a fundamental lack of legal protections for those fleeing environmental degradation and the effects of global sea level rise. This lack of protection is felt particularly strongly in the Pacific region, where many communities are faced with existential threats to their way of life and self-determination. However, despite this historic lack of support from the international community, the Pacific Islands states have continuously …

The Effect Of Acute Stress On Time-Based Prospective Memory, Peter Sawka Apr 2020

The Effect Of Acute Stress On Time-Based Prospective Memory, Peter Sawka

Senior Theses and Projects

Time-based prospective memory (TBPM) is the ability to remember to perform an action at a specific point in time. During a stressful day, one usually encounters many instances where TBPM is required. The objective of this project was to see if acute stress (situational) has an effect upon TBPM. Trinity College undergraduates ages 18-22 were used in this study. The Socially Evaluated Cold Pressor Test (SECPT) was performed to induce acute stress and raise cortisol levels in participants. Each participant had an electroencephalogram recording collected during a computer-generated TBPM Paradigm. The resulting data were analyzed within group as well as …

Character Standardization: Japan's Influence On China, Luke Blough Apr 2020

Character Standardization: Japan's Influence On China, Luke Blough

Senior Theses and Projects

Due to the pictographic nature of Chinese characters in Japan (Kanji) and China (Hanzi), throughout history the use of these characters has been inconsistent. In the mid-1900s the governments of both countries decided to regulate their use in order to make reading and writing both easier and more consistent. Both of the governments have officially done this multiple times through a process of both simplification and standardization. Simplification is to reduce the complexity of the characters, and standardization is to produce a set list of characters that can be used by the government and education system. The most recent updates …

Trinity Return-To-Learn Post-Concussion Protocol Assessment, Anna Hackett Apr 2020

Trinity Return-To-Learn Post-Concussion Protocol Assessment, Anna Hackett

Senior Theses and Projects

Return-to-learn protocols after concussion have received less attention than return-to-play protocols. Return-to-learn protocols are step by step guidelines for students and teachers to help ease concussed students back into their academic work. At Trinity College, faculty are given information on common effects of concussion and suggested academic accommodations. This study aimed to assess the entire return-to-learn protocol currently in place at Trinity College, with a specific focus on how well known the program is to students and how helpful they have found it, in an attempt to ascertain what aspects of the protocol work well and what could be improved. …

The Permanent Liminality Of Pakistan's Northern Areas- The Case Of Gilgit-Baltistan, Hamna Tariq Apr 2020

The Permanent Liminality Of Pakistan's Northern Areas- The Case Of Gilgit-Baltistan, Hamna Tariq

Senior Theses and Projects

Since Pakistan’s inception, Gilgit-Baltistan, a sprawling region in Northern Pakistan, has not been granted provincial status due to its colonial association with the disputed region of Kashmir. Gilgit-Baltistan refutes its forceful integration with Kashmir, an unfortunate remnant of British divide-and-rule strategy, and demands provincial recognition and constitutional rights. Pakistan unfairly claims that it awaits the UN-sanctioned plebiscite in Kashmir to determine the region’s status. However, the likelihood of a plebiscite is little to none, since the Indian government officially annexed Indian-held Kashmir in August 2019, breaching the UN resolution on the plebiscite. A region that has been at the mercy …

Senior Theses and Projects

Musical experience has been shown to impact electrophysiological response in response to sudden changes in music. The purpose of this exploratory case study is to investigate responses to a variety of continuous classical music stimuli in individuals with varying musical backgrounds, through the use of electroencephalography (EEG). Individuals were categorized as instrumentalists (5+ years of instrumental training), vocalists (5+ years of vocal training), or non-musicians (training). Participants were played a variety of classical vocal and instrumental music while an EEG was recorded. Data were then collected and analyzed using independent component analysis (ICA) and time/frequency analysis through EEGLAB. It was …

Mantra In Meditation: The Effect Of Sound On Relaxation, Philisha Abrahim Apr 2020

Mantra In Meditation: The Effect Of Sound On Relaxation, Philisha Abrahim

Senior Theses and Projects

The use of mantra as a tool for meditation is an ancient practice. It is a spiritually rooted discipline, thought to release various types of energy when producing sounds. The study expanded upon previous research, which analyzed the physiological effects of sound in meditation, to examine the “OM” sound and its effect on brainwaves and skin temperature. Participants were asked to complete four meditations: a baseline, silent, guided, and “OM” meditation. Study 1 included a sample population of 30 participants with no restriction on meditation experience. Study 2, with a sample population of 15, included participants with at minimum one …

Community College Student-Parents: Experience, Persistence, And Outcomes, Emily Schroeder Apr 2020

Community College Student-Parents: Experience, Persistence, And Outcomes, Emily Schroeder

Senior Theses and Projects

Adults who occupy both the role of student and parent represent over twenty percent of the American undergraduate population. Unfortunately, little research exists about the experience’s student-parents have balancing their dual responsibilities and the challenges they face while enrolled in post-secondary education. Thus in partnership with the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance and Capital Community College, we endeavored to answer the questions of what differences exist between the experiences of community college parent and non-parent students in regard to their attendance, persistence, and outcomes in community college, as well as how student-parents navigate their long-term educational goals versus the immediate responsibilities …

Silenced Voices: Situating Disability Studies In France Through The Poet Babouillec, Mira Nakhle Apr 2020

Silenced Voices: Situating Disability Studies In France Through The Poet Babouillec, Mira Nakhle

Senior Theses and Projects

Disability studies is a growing field of research in the US, but has been slow to take root in countries with more conservative academic structures like France. In particular, representation of the experience of life with a disability is challenged when individuals face barriers of communication or stigma about their abilities. This paper looks specifically at works by and about Babouillec, a young French poet with autism classified by her doctors as “deficient by 80%”. In exploring the implications of her work, I evaluate the ways in which the mediation of her story by those around her (in the production …

Connecticut Pre-K Policy, Parental Choice, And The Trinity College Community Child Center, Manny Rodriguez Apr 2020

Connecticut Pre-K Policy, Parental Choice, And The Trinity College Community Child Center, Manny Rodriguez

Senior Theses and Projects

Traditional public schools in Connecticut have been pushed out by newer options since the landmark Sheff vs. O’Neill decision, which called for the development of magnet schools. The influx of magnet schools to Connecticut has caused traditional preschools like the Trinity College Community Child Center (TC4) to experience more competition and lose potential enrollees and revenue. For this project, I sought to discover how the growth of magnet pre-k programs has influenced how families choose schools for their 3-to-5-year-old children. I analyzed data from the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood, the Connecticut State Department of Education and conducted 10 semi-structured …

Amino Acid Sensing Ability By The Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin In Oligodendrocytes, Emma England Apr 2020

Amino Acid Sensing Ability By The Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin In Oligodendrocytes, Emma England

Senior Theses and Projects

Oligodendrocytes (OLs) are a type of glial cell in the central nervous system that require substantial nutrients such as lipids and amino acids to create the extensive, metabolically expensive myelin sheath surrounding the axons of neurons. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a regulatory kinase that is necessary for the maturation of progenitor OLs through their distinct oligo-lineage phases. Amino acids are vital for the functioning of cells. The focus of this study was to determine if mTOR activity is dependent on the availability of leucine, methionine, and alanine. This was assessed by examining the phosphorylation level of the …

Lost Voices: Solutions For Achieving Gender Parity On Corporate Boards, Mary Tursi Apr 2020

Lost Voices: Solutions For Achieving Gender Parity On Corporate Boards, Mary Tursi

Senior Theses and Projects

Women have never gained a significant voice in corporate America, holding only 27% of the board seats on the S&P 500. Recently, an increasing number of Americans have grown to realize the inequity of this practice, resulting in a rise in female directors. However, this growth is slow and largely in need of a policy to speed up the process. Gender quotas have garnered the most attention, but political limitations make them largely unattainable in the United States. In order to assess viable alternatives, this thesis assembles a database on corporate practices and uses statistical models to predict what policies …

Copenhagenization: The Spread Of The Copenhagen Cycling Gospel; A Case Study In Urban Policy Mobility, Rozaliya Momot Apr 2020

Copenhagenization: The Spread Of The Copenhagen Cycling Gospel; A Case Study In Urban Policy Mobility, Rozaliya Momot

Senior Theses and Projects

Copenhagen is synonymous with biking culture, and is one of the first things people think about in relation to the Danish capital. It has become constructed as a policy model for urban planning, especially for cycling policy, and cities around the world look to it as a "best practice" example. As American cities attempt to change their transportation dynamics and encourage alternate forms of transportation, they increasingly look to cycling as a solution, and refer to Copenhagen as a model. In this thesis, I examine how this model has been packaged and exported by influential Danish consultants and public figures …

Title Ix And Intercollegiate Athletics: An Analysis Of The Extent To Which Title Ix Has Fulfilled Its Original Promise Of Establishing Gender Equity Between Men And Women In Intercollegiate Athletics, Cara Bradley Apr 2020

Title Ix And Intercollegiate Athletics: An Analysis Of The Extent To Which Title Ix Has Fulfilled Its Original Promise Of Establishing Gender Equity Between Men And Women In Intercollegiate Athletics, Cara Bradley

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis examines the extent to which Title IX has fulfilled its original promise of establishing gender equity between men and women in intercollegiate athletics. To evaluate the OCR’s commitment to establishing gender equity in intercollegiate athletics, the evolution of Title IX from 1972-2020 is provided, demonstrating a disconnect between Title IX’s intent in 1972 and how it is interpreted and enforced today by the OCR. The OCR’s Three-Part Test is analyzed by each prong’s ability to establish and measure gender equity, revealing the test’s inconsistency with the core intent of Title IX, as well as the OCR’s nonexistent enforcement …

The Demography Of Paid Family Leave As Applied To Connecticut, Mary Tursi Apr 2020

The Demography Of Paid Family Leave As Applied To Connecticut, Mary Tursi

Senior Theses and Projects

Paid family leave policies have become an international standard, influencing how Americans view parental rights. This international influence has garnered domestic support, resulting in a few US states passing their own policies. Given that every state is unique, it is important to understand how demographic and policy differences influence leave usage in the presence of a paid leave policy. Using data from the Current Population Survey, these effects will be analyzed using difference-in-difference estimations on California, which has an existing paid leave policy, and then applying them to Connecticut, whose paid leave policy has yet to be implemented. The model …

Comparative Analysis Of Deafness And The Deaf Cultural Experience In The U.S. And In Israel, Eve G. Pollack Apr 2020

Comparative Analysis Of Deafness And The Deaf Cultural Experience In The U.S. And In Israel, Eve G. Pollack

Senior Theses and Projects

The treatment of disabled individuals, including deaf individuals, has varied by nation and taken generations to improve. The United States of America, which emerged in the 20th century as one of the major world powers, was inconsistent in its treatment of the disabled until the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). The other world power, the former Soviet Union, failed miserably to consider its disabled citizens, oftentimes expelled them from society, and if not removed, forced them to endure unconscionable situations and circumstances. While these two countries' failures prove interesting to compare, the purpose of this …

Fomo, Liquid Courage, And The Intoxicated Self, Lindsay Pressman Apr 2020

Fomo, Liquid Courage, And The Intoxicated Self, Lindsay Pressman

Senior Theses and Projects

“Binge-drinking” cannot simply be recognized as a feature of campus culture, but as the product of a profoundly alienating one, made strikingly evident by our creation of a separate world (“drunk world”). We have created a small world of impossible possibles that exists in the corners of the actual; a separate world, in which the imagining of the self, other, and the world, is not only permissible but promoted. At the heart of college students’ “partying hard” is a longing, hope, and dogged determination that the liberating and unifying aspects of this world can overwhelm the actual...and in the meantime …

Femmes À Huis Clos : Les Féminités Non-Normatives Dans Le Théâtre De Sartre, Megan Caljouw Apr 2020

Femmes À Huis Clos : Les Féminités Non-Normatives Dans Le Théâtre De Sartre, Megan Caljouw

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis explores Jean-Paul Sartre’s depiction of women in theater, focusing on the female characters of The Respectful Prostitute (1946) and No Exit (1944). More specifically, I argue that Sartre presents women who reject normative conceptions of femininity prevalent in France during the twentieth century. Using Claire Duchen’s Women’s Rights and Women’s Lives in France 1944-1968 to provide a baseline understanding of gender roles during this time, I illustrate the ways in which the plays’ female characters “fail” to adhere to stereotypical notions of femininity in the realms of motherhood and sexuality. My argument is informed by a variety of …

Navigating Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: The Jumpstart Hartford Model, Mabel Silva Apr 2020

Navigating Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: The Jumpstart Hartford Model, Mabel Silva

Senior Theses and Projects

Culturally responsive pedagogy attempts to dismantle the racist structures that uphold the educational system. It acknowledges that the experiences, cultures, and traditions of marginalized communities are often missing from schooling, and tries to incorporate them by altering curriculum and day-to-day classroom practices (Ladson-Billings, 1995). However, little research has examined whether and how teachers of color utilize culturally relevant pedagogy. Jumpstart is a national program that seeks to equalize educational opportunity in pre-kindergarten by providing language and literacy services as well as social and emotional development (Jumpstart, 2019). I, therefore, posited the following research questions: How does Jumpstart Hartford utilize culturally …
