The aviation and automobile industries have recently depended on thermoset epoxy-based prepreg as a raw material for manufacturing composites. Since prepregs have a limited out-life (i.e., the maximum storing time allowed at room temperature), they must be stored in refrigerators at low temperatures. If not maintained, they can often adversely affect the desired quality of the final product. Prepregs are often discarded once the prepreg out-life ends, leading to a loss of millions of dollars and a detrimental impact on the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a simple method to monitor prepreg aging/degradation in order to ensure its …

Impact Of Covid Social Distancing Measures On Eating And Exercise Behaviors Among A Sample Of Hispanic Parents Of Young Children In The United States, Christian E. Vazquez, Katherine E. Hess, Megan J. Mcbride, Catherine Cubbin, Sarah Kate Bearman, Esther J. Calzada Nov 2022

Background: In the United States, healthy behaviors, such as eating fruits/vegetables and exercise, are well below recommended levels, particularly for Hispanics. The COVID pandemic may have exacerbated existing health behavior disparities. The current study examines the impact of COVID social distancing measures on Hispanic parents' eating and exercise behaviors, and how the impact may differ by socioeconomic status (SES) and distress levels. Design and methods: This cross-sectional logistic regression study utilized data from a sample of Hispanic parents in Texas (n = 237). COVID-related questions were collected in Summer 2020. Dependent variables included self-reported changes in exercise and eating behaviors …

A Support Vector Machine Based Cure Rate Model For Interval Censored Data, Suvra Pal, Y Peng, S Barui, P Wang Aug 2022

A Support Vector Machine Based Cure Rate Model For Interval Censored Data, Suvra Pal, Y Peng, S Barui, P Wang

The mixture cure rate model is the most commonly used cure rate model in the literature. In the context of mixture cure rate model, the standard approach to model the effect of covariates on the cured or uncured probability is to use a logistic function. This readily implies that the boundary classifying the cured and uncured subjects is linear. In this paper, we propose a new mixture cure rate model based on interval censored data that uses the support vector machine (SVM) to model the effect of covariates on the uncured or the cured probability (i.e., on the incidence part …

Inequalities In (Trans)National Surrogacy: A Call For Examining Complex Lived Realities With An Empirical Lens, Heather Jacobson, Virginie Roze Jun 2022

Inequalities In (Trans)National Surrogacy: A Call For Examining Complex Lived Realities With An Empirical Lens, Heather Jacobson, Virginie Roze

Income disparity has become a mainstay of the international critique and public discourse on commercial surrogacy. Using existing empirical data, including our two respective field studies in India and the United States, we analyze surrogacy from a gender perspective and show how the visibility of gender disparities in a transnational context encourages assumptions at the local and national context. In doing so, we highlight the narrative of inequality, explore the complexity of surrogacy outside of a one-note narrative, and show how that narrative operates to overshadow the complex, lived experiences of those engaged in surrogacy.

A Qualitative Study To Explore The Acceptability And Usefulness Of Personalized Biofeedback To Motivate Physical Activity In Cancer Survivors, Grace E. Brannon, Madison Ray, Patrick Cho, Miranda Baum, Muhammad Shaalan Beg, Therese Bevers, Susan M. Schembre, Karen Basen-Engquist, Yue Liao Jan 2022

A Qualitative Study To Explore The Acceptability And Usefulness Of Personalized Biofeedback To Motivate Physical Activity In Cancer Survivors, Grace E. Brannon, Madison Ray, Patrick Cho, Miranda Baum, Muhammad Shaalan Beg, Therese Bevers, Susan M. Schembre, Karen Basen-Engquist, Yue Liao

Objective: Many cancer survivors do not meet recommended levels of exercise, despite the benefits physical activity offers. This study aimed to understand experiences of insufficiently active overweight/obese breast or colorectal cancer survivors, in efforts to (1) examine regular physical activity barriers, and (2) determine perceptions and acceptability of a remotely delivered physical activity intervention utilizing wearable sensors and personalized feedback messages.
